Universal pioneered the horror genre with its legendary lineup of monsters—Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and more. While Halloween Horror Nights has resurrected some of these icons in haunted houses, and Universal’s upcoming Las Vegas horror attraction promises year-round frights, nothing compares to the scale of Dark Universe, the epic monster-themed land that’s now officially open at Universal Epic Universe.
Here, guests are fully immersed in a world where monsters roam freely, science pushes moral boundaries, and every fog-filled alleyway hides a story. With thrilling attractions, sinister shows, monster makeovers, eerie eats, and chilling shops, Dark Universe is a love letter to Universal’s horror legacy—and a bold step into its future.
Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, her faithful servant Ygor, The Invisible Man, Victoria Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Bride of Frankenstein all helped open the portal to this haunting realm.
Let’s take a look at the land’s dark delights, monstrous characters, and spine-tingling surprises that make this one of the most immersive and ambitious themed lands Universal has ever created.
Dark Universe: Enter If You Dare
The journey begins at the edge of reality. Step through an electrified portal, pulsing with unstable energy, and you’ll find yourself in the shadowy village of Darkmoor—a gothic hamlet gripped by mysterious forces. Here, the towering silhouette of Frankenstein Manor looms in the distance, its windows flickering with the ominous blue glow of experiments gone awry.
The land feels alive, with subtle storytelling details tucked into every crevice. The town square may look quaint, but the blood-filled well at its center tells a more sinister tale. Vampires lurk behind shuttered windows, and an eerie violinist’s tune might be your only warning before you spot something… inhuman.
But not all monsters in Darkmoor hide in the shadows. Dr. Victoria Frankenstein, descendant of Henry Frankenstein, has a bold vision: a world where monsters and mortals coexist. As you explore the village, her influence is everywhere—from electrified lab equipment humming in back alleys to locals whispering about her newest creation.
The land is more than a monster museum—it’s a living horror story. At its core is the headlining attraction: Monsters Unchained – The Frankenstein Experiment, where guests come face-to-face with Victoria’s experiments—and the consequences of her ambition.
Created by the Universal Creative team in collaboration with Universal Pictures, Dark Universe weaves together legendary characters— Dracula, The Wolf Man, the Bride of Frankenstein— and introduces a new generation of monsters. The result is a first-of-its-kind theme park land steeped in atmosphere, lore, and monstrous imagination.
After sunset, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s experimentation takes center stage as the dark energy flows through the area.

Frankenstein Manor is hooked into the village of Darkmoor, creating lively displays on several buildings.
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment (Height Requirement – 48″)
Enter Frankenstein Manor for a front-row seat to Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s twisted experiments in a thrilling attraction.
The title is written in blood beneath the wait time… a sign of the terrifying experience that awaits inside the manor.
The queue weaves through the manor, setting up the motivations for Victoria’s interest in her great-grandfather’s experiments. The outdoor extended queue even houses Dr. Henry Frankenstein’s grave, complete with graffiti from an unhappy local.
Heinrich Von Frankenstein 1843-1935
Frankenstein Manor is filled with beautiful artwork from a time before Victoria’s obsession.

Much of the manor is filled with evidence of Victoria’s experiments, finally leading to a containment chamber for her greatest challenge, Count Dracula.
The original Frankenstein’s Monster is on display— the one fighting monsters in this attraction is a Victoria Frankenstein original.
Victoria’s misunderstanding of her great-grandfather’s experiments comes full circle when she demonstrates her ability to control the most dangerous monster of all, Count Dracula.
The pre-show features Victoria’s improved monster— “better than the original!” Dracula takes on the role of instigator, unleashing a horde of enraged monsters upon the Manor. Guests come within inches of the clutches of Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Brides of Dracula, and others. Each character is brought to stunning life through some of the most detailed animatronics we’ve ever seen.
The ride vehicle utilizes the same KUKA arm technology as Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, but the ride is much smoother and less motion sickness-inducing.
The fourteen animatronics in Monsters Unchained – The Frankenstein Experiment are spine-chilling. The scale, speed, and power of these creatures add an intensity that’s sure to dazzle— and terrify— riders. We highly recommend this attraction due to the elaborate level of physical design. Best of all, this is a high-capacity attraction, so we expect most guests will have a chance to experience it during their visit to Epic Universe.
Curse of the Werewolf (Height Requirement – 40″)
A spinning family coaster inspired by The Wolf Man hides deep in the woods at the edge of Darkmoor.
Upon entering the encampment of The Guild of Mystics, Maleva, the guild’s leader, warns that riders bear the mark of the werewolf. Riders board spinning wagons and venture into the forest, racing to escape the werewolves in pursuit.

This family coaster is short and semi-sweet. We loved the thrill of the spinning vehicles, and the dramatic werewolf animatronic figure is terrifying. Yet, we didn’t love being enclosed in nets for much of the ride. The nets visually spoil what is otherwise a beautiful part of the forest of Darkmoor.

This coaster also has the lowest level of theme in the land. While some of the show scenes feel complete, others feel temporary and inconsistent. Hopefully, Universal Creative will be given the time and budget to polish this attraction and solve the safety net issues.
Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience
Monster makers have converted Dr. Pretorius’ infamous lab into a monstrous parlor to continue his demented experiments. Here, skilled artisans transform guests of all ages into monsters with face paint and temporary tattoos.
- Experiment (makeup only): Starting at $45 for age 5+
- Transformation (makeup + accessories): Starting at $109 for age 5-9; starting at $169 for age 10+

Meet the Monsters
There’s always someone… or something… in the shadows of Dark Universe, including Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s Monster, the alluring Bride of Frankenstein, and even The Invisible Man—if you can spot him.

Guests will also encounter other unusual inhabitants roaming the village, including Victoria Frankenstein’s servant, Ygor, an eccentric monster hunter, and a musician who regales guests with songs and tales of the classic Universal Monsters stories.

Dark Universe Dining
Even monsters have to eat, and Dark Universe provides several immersive dining experiences in the village of Darkmoor.
Das Stakehaus – A dining hall run by vampire “familiars” who size up unsuspecting patrons to be part of the vampires’ feast. The restaurant features artwork and artifacts detailing the history of the village’s creatures of the night and a menu of kebabs, burgers, sandwiches, and more.
Hanging from many walls are gruesome depictions of vampires with stakes jammed into their chests.
As you’d expect, there’s not a single bit of garlic on the menu.

The Burning Blade Tavern – Despite the blades of the windmill still smoldering (and bursting into flames periodically), Darkmoor’s monster hunters have transformed the mill into their favorite hangout.
While enjoying a menu of burgers, wings, bratwurst, pretzels, and specialty beverages, guests can hear stories of the infamous “Hounds”— boastful hunters from beyond Darkmoor. An impressive display of the monster heads they consider their “trophies” decorate the interior.

The space is small and intimate, but brimming with detail.
The Burning Blade has a complete adult beverage menu, but the signature Monocane Mocktail is a great non-alcoholic alternative served in a souvenir beaker.
De Lacey’s Cottage – Near Frankenstein Manor sits De Lacey’s Cottage food stand, where the original Frankenstein’s Monster once received sustenance and friendship. The cottage serves a variety of snacks, including a pretzel and cinnamon bites.
