It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears
It’s a world of hope and a world of … GUMBALLS!
This year’s MiceChat Gumball Rally was held on February 3, 2024. The fan-favorite, family-friendly event challenges teams of Disney fans to ride as many Disneyland attractions as they can in a single day. The gameplay is designed to put everyone on a level playing field and allow them to play at their own pace. And, as returning players will tell you, every year incorporates a different theme and surprise twists to the game.

But the Gumball Rally is more than just a single race, it’s a full weekend of activities. Let’s take a look at Gumball Rally 2024.
MiceChat Gumball Rally 2024: Come to the Fair
This year’s Rally was inspired by the 60th anniversary of the 1964 World’s Fair (hence the tagline, “Come to the Fair”). Walt Disney famously created four incredible attractions for the fair, including “it’s a small world,” Carousel of Progress, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and the Ford Magic Skyway, … all of which made their back to Disneyland in one form or another.

The “Fair-ly” Large Trophy
Beyond priceless memories and friendships, one team walks away each year with a gumball machine-turned-trophy intricately designed to fit that Rally’s theme. For MiceChat’s Gumball Rally 2024, Topher Hays crafted a gumball-sized World’s Fair! From the miniature guests visiting the fair to Rolly Crump’s Tower of the Four Winds standing at the trophy’s center, there are so many details to enjoy.

MiceChat Relives the Fair
To kick off the grand 3-day Gumball Rally weekend, MiceChat held a memorable panel at the Anaheim Hotel on the evening of Friday February 2nd. Disney history experts and Imagineers shared photos, videos, artifacts, and stories about the 1964 World’s Fair and its impact on Disneyland. The panel included legendary Imagineer Bob Gurr, Imagineer and theme park author Chris Merritt, and Imagineer and expert on the fair Bill Cotter, with Disney historian and author David Koenig as the moderator.

Panel attendees were regaled by Bill Cotter with deep Disney-focused dives into the history of the World’s Fair, including newly rediscovered videos and photos. Christopher Merritt talked in further detail about what inspired the designs found in the different attractions. And Bob Gurr peppered the conversation with charming anecdotes about developing technology that would debut at the fair alongside Walt Disney.

Chris Crump, son of Disney legend Rolly Crump, also appeared as a surprise guest! He even brought an additional surprise with him: a model of The Tower of the Four Winds, the icon his father created to encourage guests of the 1964 World’s Fair to pay a visit to “it’s a small world.”

What a dream team of a panel! Attendees needed to catch some shut-eye after all that excitement, especially with the Gumball Rally itself, starting at 6am the next morning…
The Main Event – The Gumball Rally!
Here it is, folks: the 9th wonder of the world, the MiceChat Gumball Rally! And what a whirlwind blast from the past it was!
Take a moment to enjoy a short video from this year’s big event:
Do the (Gameplay) Twist!
What’s a Rally without a few twists to keep the game fresh and teams on their toes? Our staff concocted two clever changes. The first was a 3 booklet gameplay – a Gold book to keep all day and a Red and Blue booklet that could be swapped out midday.
The questions within were written in two parts. The first was more of a guidebook about each attraction, including the rides, fun facts, Walt Disney connections, and so on. Then, the second part described how the teams would prove they actually rode the attraction.

The second twist was that each attraction was worth a different amount of points, putting a greater value on those originally created for the Fair (like “it’s a small world” and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln) as well as most others built in the 50s and 60s.

Another twist wouldn’t be revealed until the Awards Party… the questions were written by one of our very own teams… The Princesses of Gumball!

Ready, Set, …
The start of the Rally was in the ballroom of The Anaheim Hotel. Dusty Sage and Matt Juergens explained the rules of the game to the teams at 7am and then released them to head to Disneyland. The competition officially started with park opening at 8am.

Then, before you know it, it’s rope drop and the teams are off on their own adventures!
Teams at Play
Throughout the day, our teams rode attractions, filled in the answers to questions in the three booklets, and had to navigate weather, ride closures, and wait times.
Don’t Forget the Group Photo!
In the middle of the day, the teams took a quick break for a giant group photo at 1:30 in front of “it’s a small world,” (one of the 4 attractions Walt Disney created for the 1964 New York World’s Fair). And they got additional points for participation!

The Finish Line
As the time edged closer to 6:30pm (the deadline to turn in the gamebook without being penalized points for tardiness), more and more teams crossed the finish line at the Anaheim Hotel. And as you can see, that sense of accomplishment after a long Rally day is a serious endorphin boost after an exhausting day!
Volunteers were standing by to timestamp and collect books from teams as they arrived. After relinquishing their book, teams grabbed sustenance and socialized before the closing ceremony began.

And Now, a Little Diversion
After the gamebooks had all been accounted for, even more volunteers quickly got to work tallying the results. While numbers were being crunched, the teams took a much-deserved break while participating in a live gameshow hosted by Hastin Zylstra and Nick Tierce.

Modeled after the popular 1950s/60s-era show “What’s My Line?,” players were chosen from the audience for some friendly competition. Even Dusty Sage joined in!
Walt Disney himself famously appeared on the original What’s My Line:
