With so much taking place for the kickoff of the Disney100 celebration at the Disneyland Resort, there was a lot of ground for us to cover this week. We got special previews of almost everything taking place for the Disney100 Celebration, and then returned to see it all again for the official opening on Friday! But on top of all that, we still took the time to assemble a full update for you today on everything going on at the resort… The opening of a major new ride, two new spectaculars, a new gallery exhibit, new decor, merchandise, food, construction projects large and small, and a refurbishment update. There’s a lot to cover today, so let’s dive on in!

Disney100 Celebration Launches!

Disney100 kicks off the celebration of 100 years of The Walt Disney Company. Most of the public celebration of that milestone will take place at Disneyland. The entire resort is filled with banners, shields, plaques, medallions, merchandise, and even food that sports a Disney100 logo. Unfortunately, many guests think that means Disneyland itself is 100 years old. But it’s still an honor for Walt Disney’s original theme park to be the heart of the company’s efforts. Let’s take a quick look at the Disney100 celebration at the Disneyland Resort. There are some huge hits and a miss or two…

HIT: Wonderous Journeys

Disneyland’s newest nighttime spectacular, Wondrous Journeys, has arrived with much fanfare and I am happy to report that it’s an absolute home run! The show is about 15 minutes long and packed with the magic and energy that we would expect for such an important occasion.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Mickey Mouse kicks things off, followed by Snow White and other hand-drawn classic characters. The show then follows a path through the entire history of Disney Animation! The park claims that every Disney animated feature is worked into the show somewhere. We’ll just have to trust them on that because there’s a lot of visual overload that would keep you from spotting them all. But it works. And it’s a wondrous testament to the company’s innovative 100 years in animation.

But, whatever you do, don’t miss this GLORIOUS 4K video shot by our own PhotoMatt:

MISS: World of Color- ONE

The other nighttime spectacular is at California Adventure. World of Color-One is a beautiful show of lights, music, water & lasers, but it misses the mark with the message for the occasion. The show starts by telling us that Walt Disney started a ripple that created a wave. But then it jumps to a point long after Walt’s death, without showing a single one of his groundbreaking films. It’s a snub to the founder of the company and really inexcusable for an anniversary show. There’s also an issue with the slow pace of the show and some oddly slow musical choices. But it picks up near the middle with a rousing Star Wars number. If this hadn’t been an anniversary show, and they hadn’t mentioned Walt at all, I think it would have come across better for me. And I don’t want any of this to stop you from seeing the show. It’s beautiful… it’s just conceptually flawed in my personal opinion.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

While World of Color is not canceled for high winds as the fireworks often are, the wind does take a toll on the quality of the show. On our preview night last Wednesday, the winds were so high that we barely even see the projections on the mist screens and fountains.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

And the fire was significantly blown off course.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

A cool feature of the MagicBand+ is that it is integrated into the nighttime spectaculars. It lights up and vibrates in sync with the show. This was my frist time experiencing MagicBand+ during a spectacular and I was amused by all the tapping on my wrist and colorful lights… though it was a bit distracting. But what I really wish is that I could use it for more things, such as linking to my preferred payment method for making food and merchandise purchases or opening my hotel room door… you know, all the things these bands can already do at Walt Disney World. But I digress… back to the show.

HUGE HIT:  Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Toontown is still deep under construction (set to open March 8!), but the newest attraction in the land also opened this week! Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is already delighting the guests who are lucky enough to obtain a spot and know how to figure out how to do so.

While the land is largely behind construction walls, the east end of Mickey’s Toontown has opened, showcasing the fresh look of the area (Roger Rabbit’s Cartoon Spin remains closed). There is ample room in the newly-reopened area and it looks like more shade is being included. I thought I would miss the Roger Rabbit fountain, and I do, but the large new (fake) grass park area feels much more open and well-integrated.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Everything in the land has fresh paint and the new hills have been reimagined with more vibrant colors and little details to spy (like a barn, little trees, and even a windmill). All of the interactive elements in the currently open area of the land are working, with the exception of the manhole cover behind the Fire Station.

Jeffrey Shaver-Moskowitz, the Executive Portfolio Producer of the Disneyland Resort and Aulani at Walt Disney Imagineering, told us that one of the goals for this attraction was to evoke a feeling that the El CapiTOON has always been a part of Toontown. And that’s mostly what they accomplished. One thing is for sure, the attraction entry is easy to find.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway opened on Friday as part of the Disney100 launch. As a family attraction with no height or age limit, I just can’t give it enough praise. It’s a really fun and lighthearted attraction that’s a perfect fit for ToonTown and for Disneyland. I’m sure there will be some teens and Tweeps who are too cool for a Mickey Mouse ride, but I’d bet that even they will secretly love it.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Even the queue of this ride is FILLED with jokes and easter eggs for you to find and enjoy. The main problem is that the line generally moves faster than you can take it all in.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Watch out for Lonesome Ghosts, Disco Duck, amazing parody movie posters, and a concession stand that is filled with gags and hidden Mickeys.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Throughout the theater lobby, there are several movie posters that offer a Toontown take on real-world movies.

The attraction is a vibrant and whimsical mix of physical sets and props and digital image mapping. It’s really quite stunning. Though, for those of you who have been on the Orlando version of the attraction, they are nearly identical.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

The two problems at the moment are that the attraction is still unreliable and has been breaking down. The other issue is the entirely digital way of joining the queue. You can either enter a Virtual Queue at 7am or 1pm, or you can buy an extra cost Lightning Lane (which was $20 over the weekend). At 1pm, you could tell who got a reservation and who didn’t by the yells for joy and the boos of disapproval. Reservations were gone the instant the queue opened. Talk about luck of the draw! Still, passholders will likely outgun the tourists as there is a bit of a nack needed to score a spot when things fill that rapidly.

If you aren’t going to be visiting for a while or don’t mind the spoilers, Dusty has a fabulous ride video as he was the very first person in the media to step aboard last Wednesday.

Sleeping Beauty Castle Makeover & Park Decorations

I’ll be honest folks, I like most of the 100th decorations, particularly the shiny stuff. But there are a few misses as well. Sleeping Beauty Castle has been beautifully decorated for the 100th celebration. While the iridescent medallions don’t look incredibly brilliant at night, during the day the sun creates a gorgeous rainbow shimmer effect and the fountains in the moat are beautiful and should never be removed. Some folks are less excited by the large swaths of white fabric on the castle, but the rest of the banners look just fine to me.

Disney has even wrapped one of the Monorail trains with a new iridescent Disney100 design that I’m completely in love with. We are hoping that the rest of the fleet will get the same magical treatment.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

The new Platinum Mickey statue in Town Square is quite the popular photo spot.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

And the real Mickey and friends are now wearing their Disney100 garb in the parks. All of the characters are generating HUGE lines right now.

Disney Gallery Disney100 Exhibit

The Opera House in Town Square houses the Disney Gallery with an all-new exhibit that features artwork, replicas, maquettes, and more from Disney’s 100 year history. The exhibit showcases the various aspects of The Walt Disney Company, as both a pioneer in animation, theme parks, and entertainment.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

The exhibit itself features a neat assortment of items. Unfortunately, the way the items are displayed is akin to a middle school science fair with corkboard panels on roll-out screens. We wish that there was more care taken in bringing this exhibit to life.

For a comprehensive look at what is featured in the Disney100 exhibit at the Disney Gallery, be sure to take a look at the article from Samantha Davis-Friedman below!

The Disney Gallery Presents: Disney 100 Years of Wonder

Downtown Disney Decorations

Downtown Disney features the same medallions as Disneyland and California Adventure. There is also a larger statue of Mickey Mouse that is placed in front of a mural. The medallions look a little bit more plastic than the smaller ones in the parks. But I do like seeing the details.

More Disney100 Merchandise Collections Arrive

While the Disney100 Platinum Collection made its debut last December, the official start of the Disney 100 Years of Wonder Celebration brought with it two additional collections. Both of these new, retro-style merchandise collections, one inspired by the early days of Walt Disney Studios and another Disneyland, belonged to a three-part series called the Disney100 Eras Collection.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…
This mug with Walt Disney’s business card is part of the Disney100 Eras Collection – The Walt Disney Studios.
, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…
This tote is from The Disney 100 Eras Collection – Disneyland.

You can see more of both of these collections, along with the previously-released Platinum Collection, by clicking the link below:

UPDATED! New Disney100 Merchandise Collections Now at Disneyland!

And if you can’t make it to the parks, these collections are also sold on shopDisney. The Disney100 Platinum Collection and Disney100 Eras Collection – The Walt Disney Studios are available now, and the Disney100 Eras Collection – Disneyland will arrive online on February 6.

Of course, there’s a lot more to the celebration than we can show you here and we’ve had a lot of articles about each of the elements of the Disney100 celebration. We’ve got a great article that serves as a launchpad to the magic:

Magic Keys Availability

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Magic Keys became available again a couple of weeks ago. Shockingly, the two most expensive tiers were STILL available last night when I was writing this. We find it interesting that any Keys are still available since every other release has resulted in keys selling out within a day or two. Has Disneyland mysteriously added much more availability for Magic Keys this time around? Or have they finally found the number of souls willing to pay these crazy prices? Tell us what you think!

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

The Inspire and Believe Keys remain available, with the Enchant and Imagine keys being available for renewal-only, at this time.

Construction Projects Around the Resort:

Even with Disney100 in full swing, there is still a lot of major work happening around the resort. Let’s take a look and see how all of the projects are progressing…

Current Disneyland Refurbishments:

  • Tarzan’s Treehouse Transformation: (September 1st, 2021-2023)

The major re-imagining of the treehouse is estimated to be completed sometime in 2023. There has been an incredible amount of progress, but you can tell in the photos below that there is a lot of “heavy” work to be done.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Several weeks ago, we showed that there were sections of the tree that still have no skin on the skeletal structure. While much of that has been completed, there are some very large sections that are in the same condition. You can see on the right-hand side of the photo below, that a large section of the tree structure is waiting to have the bark put on.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

  • Mickey’s Toontown (March 9th, 2022-March 8th, 2023) – but Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is already open!

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

  • Indiana Jones Adventure: (January 9th-Spring 2023)

  • Grizzly River Run: (January 9th-Spring 2023)

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

  • Fairfax Market: (January 9th-February 4th)

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

  • Haunted Mansion: (January 30th-February 9th)

The Holiday Mansion completed its holiday run on Sunday, after an extended stay to prevent too many attractions from being down at the same time. With all of the work happening on various attractions, it made sense to keep this one open for just a little longer than normal to absorb some of the crowds that would otherwise congest the walkways and other attractions.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Haunted Mansion Holiday was operating from September 2022 and ran through January 2023. For many of the MiceChat team, that was WAY too long. How do you feel about the length of time the Mansion remains in Holiday-mode? Will you be happy to see “classic mansion” return?

  • Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind: (January 30th-February 9th)

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Upcoming Disneyland Refurbishments:

As some refurbishments are wrapping up, others will just be getting started.

  • French Market and Mint Julep Bar: (February 17th-TBA)

The French Market is transforming into Tiana’s Palace starting in February. We don’t anticipate the transition to take too long, but right now the project has an open end date.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…
The French Market Restaurant in New Orleans Square at Disneyland will be reimagined into Tiana’s Palace.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

For more info about Tiana’s Palace, take a look at the article below:

Tiana’s Palace to Replace New Orleans Square Classic in Disneyland

  • Silly Symphony Swings: (February 27th-TBA)

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

  • Mark Twain Riverboat: (March 6th-9th)

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

The walls blocking access to Adventureland and New Orleans Square remain up, but with a week of perfect weather, there was some significant progress we noted. You’ll see that the concrete has been poured. This project has created a substantial increase in traffic through Frontierland, congesting an already busy pinch point.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

The project goal was intended to fix the steep grading on this little path between Frontierland and Adventureland. You can see the level of the old walkway by looking at the walls that are partially painted.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Disney California Adventure Construction:

Let’s check up on the state of construction around DCA.

  • San Fransokyo/Pacific Wharf

The Pacific Warf has been drained and construction is underway. The dining area and bridge will be re-themed to the tune of Big Hero 6, which takes place in the city of San Fransokyo.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

This re-theme is taking place at the same time as Grizzly River Run’s planned refurbishment. We can expect GRR to be closed for the duration of the San Fransokyo re-theme since they share a water supply.  How long will that be? During our press event for Disney100, Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock said the project would be completed much sooner than people expect.

  • Radiator Springs Racers – Reopened

And we have great news about California Adventure’s most popular attraction. Radiator Springs Racers completed a short refurbishment which was mainly to resurface some of the outdoor track to improve reliability in the rain.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

We’ll see if that made a difference as soon as today since we’re expecting a bit of wet weather in the area. BUT… there’s another nice surprise. Sherif is moving again. While the project to fully restore him may be a longer-term endeavor, they have been able to get him functioning well enough for it to feel a bit more natural. This ride is suffering from supply-chain-related issues, but they’ve somehow managed to scrape by well enough that most guests likely won’t notice that the attraction is running with fewer vehicles and with some effects not quite as designed. A huge undertaking that the maintenance team here has been struggling with since the park reopened. They’ve done a great job under the circumstances.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Downtown Disney Construction:

There are a couple big projects going on in Downtown Disney.

  • Wonderground and Home Store:

The two suites that were home to Wonderground and the Disney Home Store are getting some major work done. It’s difficult to tell exactly what is going on behind those tall walls, but it almost looks like the two suites are being opened into eachother.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

At least for the purposes of the construction work, you can see from the Home Store into Wonderground. The decorative wall which contained the “HOME” sign was completely removed.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

  • Monorail Station:

Work continues in front of the Downtown Disney Monorail station. The Monorail is still in operation and the DTD station remains open. The planters inside the construction area have been demolished in some capacity, and it would be smart if the area was opened up to allow for more traffic into the Star Wars Trading Post area.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

This and That

We’re wrapping up the news today with some of the smaller stories from around the resort.

Long Waits for Mobile Orders

When we first saw mobile order come out, we sort of liked the idea of being able to bypass the line and quickly get our food at a pick-up window. But over time, Disney removed more and more registers, making standby lines increasingly uncomfortable. It’s clear that Disney isn’t providing as many registers as guests would like, as even when lines reach unacceptable levels many guests still won’t use the Mobile Order.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…
Mobile Order return line on the left, standby line on the right. No one happy. Terrible system!

Now, some of the mobile order lines themselves are becoming unmanageable. The worst we noticed was the Jolly Holiday Bakery line that went from the top of the stairs of the bakery, wrapped all the way around the front of the restaurant, and ended just past the Refreshment Corner seating area. Before guests got there, they had already placed orders hours in advance (up to a three-hour wait for a mobile order window). Is the mobile order system overloading the dining locations? There is also not nearly enough seating for that many people. It is difficult to enjoy a Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque while standing.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Frederick Douglass Exhibit

The story of the historic relationship between Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln will soon be brought to life in the Opera House, the home of “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln”. The video will debut for Black History Month in February (and beyond).

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

The new video will explore the historic but complicated relationship between the two men.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Near the doors out of the Opera House, next to the Mad Hatter hot shop, there is a new painting of Frederick Douglass. It’s really stunning, and a great new addition. But can be easily overlooked since it doesn’t have an informational placard.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Splash Mountain Isn’t Closing Quite Yet

While the Florida version of Splash Mountain made its final splash last week, the local version is still operating as it normally does. In order to bring Tiana’s Bayou Adventure to reality, the attraction must close eventually. While there are rumors from Cast Members of a quiet close (closing without prior notice) in the near future, nothing has been mentioned from official sources. We will say that this is the least popular time of the year for the attraction since many guests just don’t want to get wet when it’s cold out. It would make sense for the attraction to close when demand is at its lowest.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

On-ride photos haven’t been handled in this location for quite some time, leaving the booth shuttered and almost abandoned-looking. All photos are now handled in the Disneyland app and at the Photo Concierge stand at the front of the park.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Tritons Garden

The pools that at one time had a water and light show appear to be making a comeback soon. We had recently shared photos of the sorry state of the lagoon with airline tubing floating at the surface. But the water is bubbling once again. This may be a small thing to many, but the magic is in the details. We hope the full lighting package is restored here as well.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Galaxy’s Edge Price Reductions!

In a shocking twist, the price to build a lightsaber or a droid has recently been reduced. Back in October, the price to build a lightsaber in Savi’s Workshop went up from $219.99 to $249.00. That price has now come back down to its original price of $219.99.

The same thing happened at the Droid Depot, where the price went up from $99.99 to  $119.99. The price to build your custom droid has now come back down to the original price of $99.99.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

While that price increase didn’t last very long, we have to wonder why it really went up in the first place. Were there too many people trying to make reservations? Are there now not enough reservations? Did the price increase scare away potential guests? For now, we’ll gladly take the price cut.

Jazz Kitchen Reopens

After just a couple of weeks, the Jazz Kitchen has reopened in a reduced capacity. As of this update, only the upstairs section of the popular New Orleans-style restaurant is open. There is no word on when the rest of the dine-in restaurant will reopen. The once vibrant and welcoming location is inexplicably being de-themed.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Coming Soon! Earl of Sandwich

Signs of life continue to show at the recently closed La Brea Bakery site. We were recently told that the Earl of Sandwich would be returning to Downtown Disney to this location as a temporary shop until the west end of the shopping district was complete.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Decals have now appeared on the restaurant windows, but the windows remain covered from the inside.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

There is obviously work that needs to be completed, like paint, but that is generally a quick process.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now… , Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Steakhouse 55 Imagineering

We noticed this week that Steakhouse 55 in the Disneyland Hotel was behind black curtains with a sign reading “Imagineering in Progress” in front. We’re not sure what’s happening here, but we would absolutely love to see this restaurant return. Any guesses?

Around the Parks:

The park is beautiful with the new Disney100 decorations and the reopened section of Toontown. There has been so much happening, that we hardly have the room to display it all. Here are our favorite shots from the week.

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

Disney did an incredible job with the theming of the Runaway Railway queue. There are so many easter eggs that we will likely never find them all.

The ride feels different from different cars because the projections are always changing. For example, you’ll see a troupe of Dapper Dans riding their 4-seat bicycle in the first scene. But only guests in the first couple of cars into the room may catch it before they ride off the scene.

I absolutely love the new fountains in the moat of Sleeping Beauty Castle. Just spectacular!

, Disneyland News Update: Nothing Can Stop Us Now…

I just can’t resist a relaxing ride on Pirates of the Caribbean. Especially when the wait time is less than 10 minutes. There were several attractions around the parks that had some very short wait times this week. Perhaps the guests were all trapped in Mobile Order lines and waiting for sippers and popcorn buckets.
