Dolls for Days – The Latest & Greatest Disney Toys from Mattel

Mattel has been an industry leader in dolls and other toys (and not just ones for kids) for years, and a recent development promises to bring even more future favorite playthings into the world. The company has renewed its global licensing agreement for Disney Princess and Disney Frozen brands, including the upcoming Frozen 3 film. This renewal will last multiple years and grant Mattel the rights to continue to make fashion dolls, small dolls, and figures from these licenses. We can’t wait to see what toys come from this renewed partnership, especially after so many stellar releases this past year. Speaking of which, let’s have a look at our favorite recent Disney toys from Mattel!

Disney Toy Highlights from Mattel

Mattel has released countless toys this year alone, including those from other franchises under the Mattel umbrella. Here are the ones that stood out most to us.

Once Upon a Whimsy Collection ($80 each)

We were quite taken with these inventive dolls when we first featured them in our Disney Princess Week merchandise roundup. In this case, the clothes make the girl. Coming to us from Mattel Creations, each of these 11 to 11.5-inch-tall dolls is dressed up in an outfit inspired by a musical number from their animated film.

Tiana’s attire, inspired by “Ma Belle Evangeline,” incorporates lilypads, moss-covered bayou trees, and even the Fleur-de-Lis motif commonly found in New Orleans architecture. Ariel’s giant ruffled shrug mimics the giant clamshells that the mermaid sisters sang from in the song “We are the Daughters of Triton,” while her look is finished off with a mermaid tail-like train. Finally, Belle’s “Be Our Guest”-themed dress draws its main inspiration from the dancing dishes.

Darkness Descends Ursula Doll ($150)

Like the Once Upon a Whimsy Collection, the Darkness Descends Ursula Doll is a Mattel Creations product. It was revealed in a Disney Villains panel during Destination D23 last August. This highly detailed collectible doll stands 13.5 inches tall and boasts seven points of articulation in her upper body with posable wires running through her tentacles. But the most notable aspect is the accents that glow under UV light, including an otherwise hidden Flotsam & Jetsam tattoo on one of her shoulders. And if you don’t have a spare UV light handy, the box she comes in has LED lights embedded into it that will do the trick.

Disney Frozen Elsa & Anna American Girl Dolls ($145 each)

Mattel’s American Girl franchise started including Disney characters in recent years, including the sister duo Elsa and Anna from the Frozen series. The 18-inch tall dolls debuted as limited-edition, Swarovski crystal-encrusted collector’s items, but this year, open-edition, non-bejeweled versions were released.

The characters come packaged, dressed in the outfits shown above, but additional outfit and accessory sets, taken from Frozen 2, are also available for an additional $60 each.

Fisher-Price Little People Disney Mickey & Friends Figure Set ($19.99)

Mickey Mouse and his closest friends joined the world of Fisher-Price’s Little People with this figure set. It includes Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pluto, Daisy Duck, and Goofy as 2.7-inch-tall, toddler-friendly figures. This set is intended for toy lovers aged 18 months and older.

Disney Retro Fisher-Price Toys

We saved our personal favorites for last. If you are like us and grew up with the original versions of these beloved Fisher-Price toys, you will likely be tickled by the existence of these Disney-fied versions of their dog pull-toy, two-tune TV, See ‘n Say, toy record player, and toy cash register. Each toy maintains its retro charm but is slightly reimagined for a new generation to enjoy.
