It’s shaping up to be a monumental month at the Disneyland Resort. With the 70th anniversary celebration just two weeks away, the park is already starting to sparkle — and there are some big developments catching our eye. Over on Main Street, Walt Disney himself is returning to the spotlight (in animatronic form, no less), and it looks like those long-neglected window displays are finally getting some overdue attention.
Meanwhile, Disneyland is honoring real-life heroes with a heartfelt salute, just as it rolls out limited-time ticket offers.
From meaningful tributes to magical makeovers (and a few awkward closures in between), there’s a lot happening this week — so let’s take a look around and see what’s new, what’s moving, and what’s mysteriously missing at Disneyland…
Disneyland Reviving Walt in Bold New Show
As Disneyland’s 70th anniversary approaches, big changes are underway at the Main Street Opera House — including a brand-new pre-show exhibit and an ambitious rotating stage show that brings Walt Disney himself back to center stage… in animatronic form.

Our own Dusty Sage was invited to Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale for an early look at the project — including a sit-down with the creative team and a close-up of the eerily lifelike Walt figure. The new show, Walt Disney – A Magical Life, is designed to tell Walt’s story in his own words and will officially debut on July 17th, 2025 — Disneyland’s actual 70th anniversary. Eventually, the show will rotate with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.

The level of detail is impressive — maybe too impressive. Some guests may find themselves wondering if this version of Walt is a respectful tribute… or creeping a bit too close to the uncanny valley. Either way, it’s unlike anything Disney has done in-park before and sets a bold new standard for realism in animatronic technology.
Beyond the show itself, guests will also find an all-new lobby exhibit highlighting the creation of Disneyland 7 decades ago. Early concept art and memorabilia will be displayed in the space once home to the Disneyland 100 exhibit and the U.S. Capitol model (now in the Walt Disney Archives).

And perhaps most exciting: guests will be able to step into a lovingly recreated version of Walt’s apartment above the Firehouse, complete with original furniture, artwork, and the iconic table lamp — all on loan from the Walt Disney Family Museum.

And there’s an emotional new exit mural honoring Disneyland cast members from 1955 to today — a heartfelt tribute in the spirit of Walt’s own words:
You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.

Main Street Windows Makeover or Takeover?
It looks like some new animated windows are also on the way to Main Street. And while we feared they would be replaced with generic merchandise displays instead of the whimsical wonders we have become accustomed to, it appears the park has heard your grumbles (and ours), and fancy new windows are on the way… we hope in time for Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration.

Heroes Salute Cavalcade
This afternoon (Monday, May 5th), Disneyland will honor the brave first responders who selflessly served during January’s devastating Los Angeles-area wildfires with a special Heroes Salute Cavalcade through the park.

The heartfelt procession also marks the launch of the Heroes Ticket — a limited-time offer that invites eligible California firefighters, L.A.-area law enforcement, EMTs, and other emergency personnel who assisted during the crisis to enjoy a day at the Disneyland Resort with a guest.
The Heroes Ticket is valid Monday through Thursday from May 5 to August 7, 2025, and requires a theme park reservation (subject to availability).
If you’d like to help support the effort, Disney is selling an LA Strong t-shirt, which benefits people impacted by the fires.

New Orleans Square News
Port Royal Curios & Curiosities (near the exit to Pirates of the Caribbean) quietly closed its doors last week in New Orleans Square. With the new Madame Leota’s “Somewhere Beyond” shop now open and sitting just a ghostly whisper away from the Haunted Mansion, the change makes sense — even if it’s a little bittersweet for longtime fans of the old spot.

We’ve been speculating if Disneyland might reroute parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean queue indoors to help ease the pinch points along New Orleans Square’s main walkway — and that is likely to happen eventually – but for now, it looks like that space has been transformed into a jazz club-inspired indoor dining area. A pleasant surprise, for sure!

From what we can tell, the only real change here was the removal of merchandise displays and the addition of some tables and jazzy posters. Not much else looks touched, which suggests this setup might be temporary. Still, it’s a cozy spot to cool off — and with summer heat and humidity on the horizon, we’ll gladly take the shade. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this space to see if it sticks around or gets reimagined into a indoor queue.

Disneyland 70th
Disneyland’s resort-wide 70th-anniversary celebration is only two weeks away, but the Mickey floral is already decked out in the anniversary colors.

But, wouldn’t it be great if the Mickey at the heart of that display would revert to the classic style he had back in 1955 for the big 70th anniversary:

Which version do you like best?
Several 70th-themed flags have begun to appear atop Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Banners and bunting will be installed over the coming days (likey this week).

And the characters will sport very colorful costumes, as they “celebrate happy”

A celebration tower is being erected in the Esplanade. The shape of the frame resembles the Pixar Fest installation from two years ago, but the final design will reflect the castle with the 70th anniversary color scheme.

And it’s time to unleash the food, drink, and merchandise for the celebration of Disneyland’s 7 decades.

Constructionland
Although there are still some significant projects underway, thankfully, many of the construction walls have come down in time for Disneyland’s 70th birthday celebrations.
Let’s take a stroll around the resort to see what’s new this week… and what’s old and still blocking pathways…
Disneyland
The most significant change this week was the removal of the construction walls surrounding “it’s a small world.” On Thursday, we noticed that the flume had been refilled and empty boats were moving through the station… indicating that the attraction will reopen very soon.

And while we’re looking forward to seeing the new characters from Coco join the Mexico section of the ride when it reopens this week… it’s the new finale refrain written by Richard Sherman that we are most excited about. But we’ll likely have to wait until July 17th for that bit of magic.

Outside the attraction, the walkway from the Small World Esplanade to Storybook Land Canal Boats is still closed off behind walls for a paving project, but we expect those walls will also come down any day now.

Over in Fantasyland, the display window that usually features a royal throne set — tucked along the walkway between Fantasyland and Fantasy Faire — has now been completely boarded up, crest and all. Before this, the window was just covered with a curtain from the inside, so this is definitely a step up in the construction department. Something’s brewing here… Place your bets… will it be… 1) An interactive MagicBand window. 2) A promotion for a Disney animated film. 3) Just a refurbishment of the previous window. Or 4) A merchandise display?

In Frontierland, The Golden Horseshoe is still behind walls and a printed scrim. It seems like the walls have been moved back a bit. Hopefully, this project will be completed in the next week. Disneyland will certainly want this original entertainment venue open in time for the start of the big anniversary celebration.

At the Adventureland restrooms, that wooden frame we’ve been eyeing for weeks has now morphed into what appears to be a weathered block wall — or at least, that’s what we can make out peeking above the construction scrims. Unfortunately, it’s still unclear whether a water feature will make a comeback to this spot. We’re keeping our fingers crossed. A stone wall wouldn’t be as attractive as a waterfall. That little touch of movement and tropical flair brought a lot of life and beauty to the area, particularly since it’s the first thing you see when you pass under the Adventureland arch.

At the entrance to Adventureland, construction walls have suddenly gone up around the Tiki Room. There is currently no return date for this attraction, so we’re not sure how long the birds will be hibernating. But we suspect that this freshening up will involve refurbishing/replacing several gods and goddesses on the Tiki Room lanai.

I know, I know. I keep harping on this, but I wish Disney could get the Jolly Holiday sign working properly. If I ever had a complaint against LED lighting, it would be this right here. Incandescent bulbs don’t do this and are much easier to maintain. I wish Disney would go back to the older technology with this sign… which just doesn’t match the look and feel of the nearby signs on Main Street.

Downtown Disney
The demolition of the old Tortilla Joe’s is moving along quickly, with pieces of the steel frame coming down one at a time. It’s amazing that guests can see this work happening without scrims to block the view… and dust/fumes.

At the other end of Downtown Disney, the animated sports features on the ESPN Zone building have been covered up again. Thank goodness… but we’re curious why they weren’t just removed.

Vertical progress also continues at the future two-story home of Earl of Sandwich and Carnaby Tavern in Downtown Disney. Steel framing is now in place, and scaffolding surrounds the site as crews push forward on the next phase of construction. It’s good to see this project picking up momentum.

Disney California Adventure
The construction walls have finally come down around Carthay Circle Restaurant, and outdoor dining is once again welcoming guests. While there aren’t any major changes to report, the space is looking noticeably fresher — thanks to a new coat of off-white paint and some general cleanup work. Nothing dramatic, just a nice little glow-up for one of DCA’s signature spots. During Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration, the building will also feature a projection mapping show, along with festive banners and décor to match the occasion.

Following all the recent work on Buena Vista Street, it’s nice to see the area looking refreshed, with its signature Roaring ’20s style back in place. The updates are subtle, but the street feels cared for again.

The exterior of the Fiddler, Fifer, and Practical Cafe (aka Starbucks) is getting a bit of a refresh as well. Scaffolding and scrims were up this week.

On Hollywood Blvd, Disney Junior is still behind walls as a new show will be coming to the stage.

“Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!,” debuting at the Disney Theater at Disney California Adventure park on May 16, 2025! This must-see new stage production—inspired by Disney Jr.’s global hit series “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” and the upcoming “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+” debuting later this summer—features upbeat original songs, plenty of interactive fun for the little ones, and appearances by beloved Disney characters to sing and dance with. In “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!,” Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcome guests to Mickey’s house for a fun-filled party. Their friends Goofy, Daisy, and Pluto haven’t made it yet, so Mickey and Minnie take the party on the road to find them, ultimately uniting everyone for a high-energy finale!

If you’ve tried to take the shortcut between Cars Land and Avengers Campus lately, you may have noticed it’s no longer open. That little walkway has been temporarily closed off to support ongoing construction behind Avengers HQ for a new E-Ticket attraction. For now, you’ll find a construction wall where the path used to be, so plan to take the scenic route instead.

Nectar Opens New Kiosk
We’ve been keeping you updated on the new shops coming to Downtown Disney, and now we’re getting our first look at one of them. Nectar has opened a pop-up bus right in front of its future home next to D-Lander on the west side of the shopping district. The brand offers a colorful lineup of handcrafted vegan bath and body products that look like bakery items — it’s a fun little preview of what’s to come when the full store opens very soon.

These soaps look good enough to eat! But don’t eat them, folks. Like I said… It’s soap!

Red Guardian Arrives In Avengers Campus
In case you missed it, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” hit theaters on May 2, and to mark the occasion, Red Guardian (yep, Alexei Shostakov himself) has made his debut in Avengers Campus. He won’t be sticking around for long, so catch him while you can!

The Russian version of super-soldier Captain America (played by David Harbour) made his first MCU appearance in “Black Widow” (2021), and the actor stopped by the campus to give his stamp of approval.
