It’s a week of returns… the popular early entry program has returned for Disneyland Resort guests. Plus, we have some info that will reassure Magic Keyholders about renewals. But that’s not all… We’ve captured the first signs of Halloween at Disneyland for you as well as all sorts of little news items you’ll want to see.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys PleaseWe had so many photos and so much information, that we’ll have a part two for you tomorrow! But now, on to the issue that has so many Disney fans obsessed…

Return of Disneyland And California Adventure Early Entry

If you’re staying at one of the Disneyland Resort hotels, a special perk has returned. Early Entry allows guests staying at the Disneyland Hotel, the Grand Californian, or Paradise Pier to have a 30-minute head start on their day at the parks. Early Entry is a bit different than the previous iterations of the program. Here’s a quick rundown of how this program works:

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

In order to use Early Entry, you have to be staying on property. That means none of the nearby Good Neighbor hotels in the Anaheim resort district will have this perk. Additionally, guests must have valid theme park admission and a reservation for the same park on the same day and also checked in and currently staying at the hotel. Tickets and passes must be linked to the guest’s hotel stay through the Disneyland app.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

Furthermore, not everything will be open for use during Early Entry. Here’s the rundown of what is available during Early Entry (mostly Tomorrowland and Fantasyland attractions):

The newly redesigned Early Entry program is only 30 minutes, compared to the full hour of the previous program. However, unlike the old program which offered entry in only one park per day, the new program offers both parks every day.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
Would you wake up early for just a half an hour headstart on the regular guests?

We were at Disneyland for the first day of Early Entry. Was the 30-minute headstart enough for us to beat the crowds? Let’s see:

And… we returned the next day for Disney California Adventure early entry. You’ll want to watch both videos as the experience was not the same both days.

As you can see from the videos above, Disneyland early entry is a huge help as you can complete all of the Fantasyland attractions easily in the first 30 minutes. AND the headstart will allow you to be first in line at your favorite E-Tickets once the park officially opens to all (especially if you skip Rise of the Resistance).  Unfortunately, the available attractions are more spread out at Disney California Adventure, which makes it harder to hop from ride to ride and makes it much more difficult to get very many attractions in before regular guests arrive. And because most of DCA’s main E-Tickets are part of early entry, once the park opens to all, lines will already be established for the big rides.

Magic Keys Please!

First and foremost, before we get into the nitty gritty about why there are delays, there WILL be renewals soon. However, it may not be to your same pass level. Disneyland is only committing that current key holders will be able to renew to something… but not necessarily to the same pass level you have now. We hear talk of a potential new key.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

Now, before you get too mad, Disneyland actually wants to renew you… but there are circumstances making things tricky. A disgruntled Dream Key holder filed a lawsuit against Disneyland last year because she was unable to access the parks in the way she believed they were described and marketed. Disneyland promptly “Sold out” the Dream Key level and later all of the keys were locked while they figured out what to do.

There had been hopes that the case would be resolved by now, but it is still pending court-ordered mediation. Both parties have selected the Honorable Suzanne H. Segal (Ret.) of Signature Resolution as the mediator, but we do not know when the mediation will be scheduled. , Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

But why doesn’t Disney continue selling the passes and just pay the plaintiff to be quiet? Because a judge agreed that (parts of) the case had merit, and that means that Disney doesn’t know where they legally stand with the program. Here are the two causes of action that were allowed to proceed after the judge ruled on Disney’s Motion to Dismiss.

1) VIOLATIONS OF THE CONSUMERS LEGAL REMEDIES ACT – The act prohibits unfair and deceptive practices. The plaintiff alleges that the Magic Key was advertised to have characteristics that it does not have and that Disney failed to disclose a limitation of quantity.

For those that want more information, here is the exact text from the Complaint regarding the above Cause of Action –

“Ms. Nielsen and the proposed class members were injured by Disney because they purchased Dream Key passes believing that the passes would not be subject to blockout dates and that they would be allowed to make reservations for the parks when park reservations were available. In fact, once they owned the passes, Ms. Nielsen and other pass holders learned that the passes are subject to extensive block outs and that Dream Pass holders are unable to make reservations even when park reservations are available, as alleged herein.”

While Disney may need to make some restitution, long term all they would really need to do is make it very clear that having a Magic Key doesn’t mean you’ll actually be able to make a park reservation for the days you want.

It’s this next claim that is a little trickier…

2) BREACH OF CONTRACT: The plaintiff claims that Disney marketed and falsely represented Dream Keys as having “no blockout dates,” even though Disney had a practice of blocking Dream Key pass holders from making park reservations even when Disney’s theme parks wer not at capacity and even when park reservations were available to other ticket types. Disney also represented that Dream Key passes could be used to make reservations when park reservations were available when, in fact, Disney would not allow Dream Key holders to make reservations at times even when reservations were available to other ticket types.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
Disneyland even attempted a Magic Key Holder Celebration Month with special giveaways, merchandise, and lounges

As a result of the upcoming mediation, Disneyland is waiting. But they know they can’t wait much longer. If necessary, they could allow Key Holders to renew to the two lower key levels and later offer upgrades if the higher keys get sorted out legally. They could also completely rework the terms of the keys and have everyone purchase a new product which makes the terms clearer. OR…  They could just end park reservations and go back to the old annual pass program terms… But don’t get your hopes up on that last one… Disneyland otherwise likes how the reservation system levels out crowds and makes staffing easier.

And that’s why you’ve been waiting folks. Yes, it’s messy. But when this is all said and done, we hope there will be clearer marketing and some adjustments to make the reservation process fairer for all guests… not just the ones who buy day tickets.

The Summer Sizzle Not Ready to Fizzle

Although summer is still upon us, Halloween is nipping at our heels and kids will start going back to school soon (mid-August for many California schools). This week and next are really the last gasp of the traditional summer travel season. While park reservations are still keeping the parks in an acceptable range for wait times, it doesn’t always feel comfortable in the parks…

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
This huge switchback is for Lightning Lane guests… they paid extra for this perk.

With most Magic Keys blocked out entirely and/or on weekends, the parks are filled with more tourists than at other times of the year.  And those tourists are much more likely to purchase Genie+/Lightning Lane.  You feel that’s true when you pass any popular Lightning Lane attraction and look at the lines.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
This is a long Lightning Lane for Big Thunder. It stretches all the way to the attraction’s exit!

And even when not in a Lightning Lane, there are times and places you may find yourself in the mob… Like Big Thunder Trail when the Lightning Lane overflows…

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

And it’s not just the Genie+ attractions that are busy. If the Alice line got any longer, you wouldn’t be able to walk between the popular dark ride and the Tea Cups.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

But, as I mentioned above, the crowds are hit and miss. Take Pirates of the Caribbean for example.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

At one moment the lines may look like this…

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
Half of New Orleans Square is a giant switchback for the swashbuckling attraction.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

And just an hour later they may be like this…

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
The crowd has moved on. Where did they go? I must not have been invited to the party… (and, yes, the attraction was still open)!

In Fantasyland, mid-afternoon, half the walkway was packed with guests for the ever-popular Peter Pan… few guests were in line for Snow White. But earlier in the morning, the Snow White line was packed.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

Star Wars land felt like a ghost town in places, but Oga’s is always a big draw.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

And the recent phenomenon of the Mad Tea Party generating overflow lines is baffling. The tea cups only overflow on the busiest of days… these days the parks don’t reach those levels of crowds due to park reservations. What’s causing this? One cast member speculated that guests without Genie+ are flocking to attractions without Lightning Lanes. That’s a reasonable assumption.

Disneyland Observations and Conversations…

Even at the end of a busy summer season, there are always changes. We’ll walk you through some of the things we noticed this week.

Buzz Off…

When the new Lightyear film was released in theaters, Disneyland trotted out a face-character version of Buzz. He was located near the Tomorrowland stage in full daylight. Brutal.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

Then they moved his meet and greet to the abandoned Space Mountain Fastpass distribution area. Covered, air conditioning, great! But with the disastrous performance of the film in theaters, Buzz has been given the boot.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

He’s already gone, the backdrop for his meet and greet already removed.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
This big empty space was where the meet and greet for Buzz Lightyear was held. What do you think they should do with this space?

The only reason we find it weird that Buzz is already gone is that the film was JUST released on Disney+ August 3rd. Usually, Disney is a little tighter on synergy.

Photo Poop Pass

Disneyland recently rolled out a new photo service which costs $99 per 20-minute photo session (they recommended you book two back-to-back sessions so you can experience two photo locations). The idea is interesting. If you have a special occasion you’d like to commemorate, Disney’s photographers can capture it for you.

Check-in is at the Mad Hatter on Main Street

We do find it interesting that the photographers use some of the gardens and service dog relief areas for the photo shoots. Strike a pose, but watch your step!

Silhouette Studio Return!

For a teeny tiny little shop, we sure do get a lot of questions about when the Silhouette Studio will reopen. Since the park reopened, the space has remained roped off with lights out. But work has finally begun to bring the shop back. The windows have been blocked out, and cloth has been hung across the entry.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

The door to the Silhouette Studio is located next to the Crystal Arts Shop.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

A few weeks ago the shop was simply darkened…

Now it has been cleared out for freshening up…

Disneyland Parfumerie Becoming a Guerlain Boutique

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

Last month, we shared that Mlle. Antoinette’s Parfumerie in New Orleans Square would soon get a new mix of products. We now know that Disneyland’s perfume store will be offering mostly Guerlain fragrances and cosmetics.

The beautiful back-painted mirrors were created by Glendra von Kessel, whom her coworkers in Imagineering (then known as WED) called “The Baroness.”

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

And just a tip, your Magic Key discounts work here. And since the products are priced near regular retail, that makes this a pretty good place to shop with your discount.

You can expect to see Guerlain perfume (though, still no word on the high-end L’art et La Matieriere collection), cosmetics, and skincare. There will still be a small selection of Aqua di Parma perfumes and colognes available as well.

Thomas Kinkade Gallery at Disneyana

Disney has long worked with the Thomas Kinkade galleries, but the amount of paintings and signings has really increased. There were several days of signings over the last week at both Disneyland and Disney Springs in Florida.

Halloween is Here!

Summer has always been an important travel season for Disneyland, but Halloween has quickly become a gigantic revenue opportunity for theme parks. Although the Halloween season doesn’t officially start until September 2 at Disneyland, some signs of the spooky season have already arrived.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

In the year-round holiday shop on Main Street, Plaza Point, the seasonal decor has shifted from patriotic to Halloween. The center display of the store, along with some of the decorations in the window and shelf tops, have been redressed for the spooky season. That includes the creepy Victorian dolls being dressed as what looks like Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz (not sure what they are supposed to be, but I want one of those hats).

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

We were really hoping that Disney would play up the scary factor of these dolls, but strange little flower people works just fine.

While we were in the shop, we noticed fall-colored Minnie Ears that can be personalized by the staff of the store.

The Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay is also coming right up. You have one week left to ride the classic version of the attraction. Mansion will be closed on August 15 so Jack Skellington can wreck the halls. It will reopen on September 2 for the first day of Halloween and continue to operate into January of 2023.

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please

, Disneyland Update Part 1 – Early Morning Magic Returns, Halloween Begins & Magic Keys Please
The Haunted Mansion was quite popular over the last week with the line frequently overflowing into Magnolia Gardens in front of the New Orleans Train Station.

Over at DCA’s Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, the Halloween-time transformation to Villains Grove has begun. And that means the area is closed to guests in the meantime. Some elements have already been installed, but there’s still a lot of work to be done before it’s finished.

And in Cars Land, the first part of the land-wide Halloween overlay is taking place. In Ramone’s Body Shop, the ofrenda is currently being installed behind a construction wall. The elaborate transformation of Cars Land will be taking place over the next few weeks for Haul-O-Ween.

MiceChat Open House in Howard Johnson’s House of the Future Suite

The House of the Future is back! Well, something akin to it, at least. The Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel & Water Playground (located just across the street from the Matterhorn) has debuted a special themed suite inspired by the Monsanto House of the Future that was in Tomorrowland from 1957-1967.

This special suite is furnished with mid-century modern elements, evoking that feel of the House of the Future. Plus, an array of Disney artists had a hand in bringing this suite to life, including Shag, Dave Avenzino, Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily.
