An eerie fog has rolled in once again over Knott’s Scary Farm. Guests who are brave enough to enter will once again find a beautiful monster-filled nightmare. We were there on opening night (September 22nd) to cover everything you need to know about Knott’s Scary Farm Halloween Haunt 2022, including info about the mazes (there are 2 new ones this year), scare zones, entertainment, food, merchandise, and more.

Knott’s Scary Farm 2022
Although Southern California has many great haunt events during the Halloween season, Knott’s Scary Farm is always one of our top choices. While there were some cutbacks this year, Scary Farm has returned with nine mazes this year— two of which are brand new! Scary Farm runs on select evenings now through October 31 and is a separate admission from the daytime Knott’s Berry Farm. Knott’s is the last major SoCal theme park to kick off their haunt event this year; last year Scary Farm started a whole week earlier than this year. And while that means the haunt season is shorter than before, there are still plenty of scares ahead. And if you’re too scared to go alone (or want to meet up with other haunt-minded MiceChatters), we’ve got an opportunity for you! We’ll get to that in a little bit…
New Knott’s Scary Farm Mazes for 2022
Scary Farm has two new mazes this year. In the past few Halloween seasons, Knott’s would only update one maze each year. It’s pretty big news that Knott’s has two brand-new mazes this year… and there will likely be two new ones next year as well! (We’ll get to the retiring mazes a little later) And without further ado, the new mazes!
NEW MAZE – Grimoire
Knott’s really has a way of telling a story. In this maze, their creative team knocked it out of the park. Themed around an ancient relic that releases nightmarish horrors into the world, the lore behind the Grimoire is complex. While the trailer for the maze seemed a little hard to comprehend, Knott’s did something amazing as a middle ground between fantasy horror and psychological horror. And if the Grimoire sounds familiar to visitors from last year’s Scary Farm, that’s because it’s the very same one… and it demands a blood sacrifice!
The teaser for this maze sets up a more psychological-based horror than what is delivered in the maze. While there are some psychological aspects, there are also plenty of terrifying demons throughout. Based on the video below, would you have expected Grimoire to be so frightening?
Here is Knott’s description of the maze:
The Grimoire – an all new maze at Knott’s Scary Farm! Turn the page and enter the world of an ancient relic whose dark stories exist purely to turn your greatest nightmares into a reality. Try to escape the horror of the evil creatures released by the mysterious book, or have your soul eternally trapped within the pages of the next chapter!
There are a lot of details to extract from this maze. Between the masterful use of color (or rather, lack of it) throughout the maze to insinuate being in a different time period, the clever use of design and props, and the outstanding scare actors, this maze is a triumph.
The excellent use of special effects and blending of vintage scenes from the Grimoire’s past really sets up the spree of blood sacrifices it demands! Many have created their own chapter in the cursed relic…
This maze taps into a backstory which we will learn more about in more and more Haunt experiences going forward. The lore of the Grimoire was first featured in last year’s Invitation to Terror show, and there’s even a connection inside the Origins maze this year as well. And if you’re wondering why Invitation to Terror didn’t return this year, Grimoire uses the Mystery Lodge theater as part of the experience and queue space, just like the previous maze that inhabited the area, Special Ops: Infected.
Just how far does the Grimoire lore go? We’re already looking forward to our next visit to see if we can find some Easter eggs.
NEW MAZE – Bloodline 1842
The other new maze, Bloodline 1842, brings back Special Ops: Infected’s shooter-style laser tag interactivity, but this time around, you are hunting vampires (called Valhymphri). There’s a unique blending of fantasy, steampunk, and monsters in this one. This is a MASSIVE maze and may be one of the most ambitious in Knott’s history.
The trailer for this maze shows a band of warriors setting out to fight the Valhymphri, taking up arms to bring light back into their city.
The official maze description fills out a lot more of the details:
Blood and blessings! In the ALL-NEW Knott’s Scary Farm maze, Bloodline 1842, you’ll be armed with the latest Bellatorian weaponry. Heed the call to action as you embark on a perilous journey with the immortal Daybreakers as you travel through the busy city streets of Valdonia while hunting the bloodthirsty Valhymphri in an all out war! Bring light into the darkness and survive the vicious onslaught of vampires and bring honor to your order!
The premise of this maze is rather exciting, but it’s hindered by spacing issues that are exacerbated by the light gun elements. It took us three trips through the maze to actually see the scenes as they’re intended to be viewed— there are multiple rooms where the action stops for a moment and the story is set up through dialogue or interaction. Absolutely amazing stuff… IF you actually see it.
This includes an impressive final fight with the big bad guy. If the timing is off and/or you’re in the back of the group, it’s likely you won’t see any or all of this scene. That scene in particular requires you to utilize the light guns, but only a few people at a time can actually take aim. We encountered groups as big as thirty— all those people cannot participate in rooms this size. When we finally went through in a smaller group (about four), everyone had a much better time. Any more than eight and members of your fire team will be standing in a hallway.
It’s sad for us to consider not having this as a top priority on a future visit, the intricate set pieces make for an entertaining walkthrough. Shooting vampires is pretty fun, too. We hope Knott’s can improve the timing and group sizes so more people can experience the show as it was intended to be seen. But that would mean a big reduction in the total number of people who can make it through the experience each night (and the lines will already be insane for this one). Unfortunately, standing in a hallway while important shows scenes are happening just out of your view isn’t a great experience. This can be fixed, and hopefully will be.
This maze has replaced the popular Paranormal Inc, and was one that we actually got to see in a special preview. We interviewed Knott’s production team about the development of this new maze. There was a lot of thought and detail that went into Bloodline 1842 and this year’s Scary Farm. Take a listen below:

RETURNING MAZE – Mesmer: Sideshow of the Mind
This was the new maze for 2021, and it was (and remains!) an absolute home run. While it was the only new maze for 2021, it was every bit as creative and entertaining as you can expect from the horror masters at Scary Farm.
Within the canvas tent lies the secret of the most potent force in the universe: the human mind. Give in and succumb to the hypnotist Mesmer and his sinister sideshow, as it pries on your hidden fears. Release your inner thoughts and descend into a world of madness, torture, and eerie enlightenment. There you will uncover the grotesque secrets hidden as you brave through the most terrifying show ever created.
The entry experience of this maze has gotten a bit of a changeup from last year. Instead of an extended show scene at the start, guests now walk through a scene with performers. This makes it a lot easier for Knott’s to consistently send people through the maze without waiting for the opening show moment to end. This is a trend that we’ve noticed with Knott’s from previous mazes over the last few seasons. On the new maze’s debut, there will be a show sequence that helps set the scene, and then in future years, the entry will be streamlined. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this happen with Grimoire next year.
Mesmer himself is a master hypnotist who uses his crew of sideshow performers to lure you into a world of madness.
Take as much time as the staff allows you to walk through and enjoy all the incredible illusions and special effects. This one isn’t as much about scares as it is about bewildering you, and we devoured every bit of the incredible sets, performances, and gee-wiz moments which create this fantastical maze.
This maze is located in the middle of the CarnEvil scare zone (where Shadowlands was previously housed) and it’s a welcome addition to the Knott’s Scary Farm lineup.
RETURNING MAZE – Origins: The Curse of Calico
While we really love all of the mazes at Scary Farm, this one has been a standout for the past few seasons. This maze combines the mythology of Ghost Town Streets, Ghost Town Alive, and The Hanging (which we still miss) into a connected story. And like we mentioned before, there’s now a Grimoire tie-in as well. The Green Witch awaits…
Pierce the veil of time and discover the secret of the evil fog that hangs over Knott’s Scary Farm in Origins: The Curse of Calico. Unearth the sinister paranormal activity that plagues the town as Sarah Marshall is put on trial for her suspected crimes of witchcraft. All will be unveiled when the Green Witch rises up and curses the townsfolk, transforming all who have accused her into a wicked horde of malicious creatures with an eternal quench for the living.
The effort to tell a story starts well before you ever set foot in the maze. Character actors are positioned outside the maze attempting to rile up the waiting guests.
Each scene is so meticulously built to serve the overall story, starting with the busy Town Hall where Sarah Marshall’s trial is being held. Marshall appears on screens throughout the maze to build her story and her motivations for cursing the town.
There’s a beautiful “outdoor” scene that uses digital windows to show the transformation of citizens into monsters. The sets are incredibly impressive; we would stay here much longer if possible, but you’ve got to keep moving in mazes.
No scene exists just to spook you, it follows a very specific story, and each location feels like it’s in the actual Ghost Town. There’s a reason why you’re walking through the bank, schoolhouse, or any other location, which makes this maze feel more realistic than what you might have experienced in the past.
Rarely is there a maze that is so perfectly suited to the park as a whole. The only thing that could make this maze better would be for it to become a permanent year-round attraction.
And here’s the Grimoire featured prominently at the end of this maze. The heavy fog made it a little hard to see, but when it clears out briefly the book has an air of foreboding.
RETURNING MAZE – Wax Works
This is the maze’s 3rd year and has become a favorite for all sorts of grotesque body-horror scenes. If you’re squeamish, this one may not be for you because it’s sure to leave an ooey-gooey impression.
Mysterious lights and strange noises have begun to emanate from the eerie abandoned wax museum. The once prominent plastic surgeon, Dr. Augustus Scratch, has been seen tinkering at night and is now ready to show off his beautiful yet terrifying life-like masterpieces of hot molten wax and bloody flesh. It’s rumored that blood-curdling screams can be heard echoing through the halls of Wax Works as victims are horrifyingly submerged into a scorching hot cauldron of bubbling wax. Take a closer look at his gruesome works of art and try to escape his deadly grip of becoming the newest masterpiece to add to his collection.
RETURNING MAZE – The Depths
This is another maze celebrating its 3rd year. We have loved every iteration of it, and this year has fixed one of the more troubling aspects of the maze: its entry scene. This maze will take you to depths unseen…and you might not be seen again.
A heavy fog drapes over an abandoned port village where ancient creatures lurk inside the pitch-black underground caves hidden below the seaside shores. The Nightwatch Mining Crew has mysteriously disappeared and village rumors point to the eerie tunnels the town sits upon. Myths of the terrifying horrors that lurk within the cave have often been whispered but never confirmed. Did the crew meet their demise at the hand of vicious creatures that live within the cave? Journey into the dark caverns and follow the crew’s path into The Depths and discover if the superstition revolving around the cave is true. But be warned! All who have entered have never resurfaced…
It’s hard to take photos in the dark which properly reflect an attraction such as this. But this maze is visually stunning in places. The use of the fog and lasers to create a “surface” of water is an incredible effect. If the scare actor is positioned just right, you can see their fin poking through the fog headed towards you, like a shark homing on in the scent of blood.
RETURNING MAZE – Dark Entities
One of the things that Knott’s does really well during Scary Farm is cover a wide breadth of horror genres. For Dark Entities, you head into space only to be plagued by destructive forces. It’s brilliantly designed with genuinely scary moments lightened by campy humor.
Teleport beyond Earth and into a realm where the darkness is absolute. In the depths of space, a lone station faces terror beyond all imagination. An extraterrestrial mutation has invaded the station, and it’s on the prowl for new hosts. The unearthly inhabitants’ force increases as it feeds on their unwilling victims. Escape the dark entities before its deathly force eliminates all living forms aboard the station. There’s nowhere to escape when time is running out!
This maze is a nearly perfect haunt experience. The story is well set up; you more or less know what’s going on throughout. There are little nods of humor here and there. But it’s the building tension and terror that mark its creative design. By the time it ends, you’ve been through something akin to Ridley trying to escape from a spaceship infested with aliens.
Retiring Mazes
In order to bring new mazes to Scary Farm, that inevitably means that something must go away. This year, two classic mazes are on the chopping block. You’ll definitely want to visit these iconic mazes at least one last time.
FINAL SEASON – Dark Ride
A once pleasant, now abandoned, dark ride becomes home to murderous sideshow freaks hellbent on causing terror.
This maze has the perfect feel for the Haunt and is completely at home in a park like Knott’s. Even more so because it is located in the CarnEVIL scare zone. If only it was a real dark ride!
There have been many enhancements to this maze over the years and we aren’t tired of it yet. We’re really sad to see this one go.
This is one of the best mazes Knott’s has ever done. The theme is perfectly at home for Knott’s, and year after year this maze has exceeded our expectations. While we’re interested to see what Knott’s has up their sleeve for next year, we’ll miss going through this hellish dark ride again.
FINAL SEASON – Pumpkin Eater
“Peter, Peter, pumpkin-eater. Had a wife and couldn’t keep her. He put her in a pumpkin shell, and there he kept her very well.”
This one gives me chills. Remember the nursery rhyme: “Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater”? Knott’s has taken this childhood staple and twisted it into a truly terrifying tale of murder and revenge. Now Knott’s has unleashed a diabolical 7-foot tall creature that haunts the old woods surrounding The Hollow. To escape the sinister Pumpkin Eater’s wrath guests must face a cave of crawling insects and solve the labyrinth of thorns that blocks the only way out.
Apparently, Knott’s believes that nursery rhyme is about Peter getting tired of dealing with his wife’s extra-marital activities and shoving her remains into a pumpkin. What a delightfully disturbing premise for a maze.
This maze ranked very high once again, we just can’t get enough of it. It’s very creative, each segment being creepy and unique. Who’d have thought that the Peter you sang about as a child was such a bad man?
If you love the premise of this maze, you may also be interested to check out what Universal Studios Hollywood is doing with “Scarecrow’s Revenge” this year. While we think Uni may have taken some notes from Knott’s, it’s also unique enough to stand on its own.
Will we miss Pumpkin Eater? Absolutely! But it’s also been around for quite some time, so it’s sadly time for something new to take its place. But for this year, I’ll be avoiding spending too much time in pumpkin patches after dark…
Scare Zones
There are not many places you can catch your breath at Knott’s Scary Farm with its abundance of scare zones. That’s what makes Knott’s feel so haunted during Scary Farm with its atmospheric characters creeping around every corner, just waiting to frighten you. If the lines for the haunted houses get too long for your liking, you can still enjoy the rest of Scary Farm just wandering the foggy streets of the park. Here are the scare zones for Scary Farm 2022…
RETURNING SCARE ZONE – Ghost Town Streets (49 Years)
After nearly half a century, this scare zone is always one we’re excited to see year after year. With a whole range of various monsters, there’s always a new detail to be looking for every time you visit. Ghost Town Streets is the original and largest of all the scare zones. Bands of half-human, half-animal monsters prowl the streets and inhabit the fog. Beware the notoriously startling Sliders who lunge from every fog-filled corner of the land. This is the nightmare we hope never ends.
RETURNING SCARE ZONE – CarnEvil
The Boardwalk clowns are a terrifying and funny classic, perhaps almost as famous as Ghost Town Streets. This is one area where it’s fun to find a place to sit and watch the clowns scare, trick, and entertain other guests. Amazing. The wicked clowns have made their way back to the park for a glorious 21st year.
RETURNING SCARE ZONE – Forsaken Lake
Reflection Lake, the body of water underneath Silver Bullet, reveals the horrors and creatures it’s kept hidden, until now. Forsaken Lake unleashes gothic creatures, which have been ravaged by the dark and murky waters, as they wander their crypts preying on unsuspecting visitors, looking for victims to drag back to their watery graves.
FINAL SEASON – The Hollow
The Hollow scare zone is a war between three covens of witches and their armies of the undead. The fog-filled streets along with the army of the undead treacherously blend into the shadowy night as they frighten all whom they encounter. This scare zone fits well with the Pumpkin Eater maze. We wish all the mazes would fit into the themes of the scare zones in the way rides are supposed to fit into lands. This one is eerie, HUGE but unfortunately, we didn’t see too many scare actors each time we went through this area.
This is the final run for The Hollows scare zone, which makes sense since it has a tie to the Pumpkin Eater maze. We hope that whatever scare zone replaces this still makes for a beautifully creepy counterpoint to the kid zone it is during the day.
RETURNING SCARE ZONE – Gore-ing 20’s
With all the returning favorite Scare Zones last year, Scary Farm introduced a new one as well. Over in the Charleston Circle area (near Knott’s Bear-y Tales), a speak-easy filled with ghostly citizens of the Roaring 20s is newly opened to human guests.
We didn’t feel many scares here, but we appreciated the cinematic appeal of the amazing character performances.
There is also live music and dancing on the second level of the Walter Knott Theater. It’s unexpected but it really adds a lot of character to the atmosphere.
Other scare actors in this zone include a newspaper salesperson, religious zealots, and flappers.
There’s sadly no real speakeasy here, it would be fun to have a drink with these boys and ghouls.
Knott’s Scary Farm Entertainment 2022
Last year, Knott’s expanded their entertainment for Scary Farm, which was a great thing since there hasn’t been a major Elvira-headlined show or Hanging since 2019. However, this year has a few cutbacks— this year offers only returning shows and some of last year’s entertainment has been axed.
RETURNING ENTERTAINMENT – Carnaval du Grotesque
Last year, we were really disappointed with this entertainment offering. This year, the show had us glued to the performers the whole time. While last year was a joint production of a rock band and carnival acts, this year, the whole show is about the performers. On opening night, we saw a whole dance troupe, a hair suspension artist, a fire dancer, an acrobat, and an incredible gyre performer. This is definitely a major upgrade from last year.
RETURNING ENTERTAINMENT – Puppet Up! Uncensored
Puppet Up! is a show that is worth the price of admission alone for its delightfully naughty antics. We have absolutely loved this improv puppet show for the past two Scary Farm seasons and we are thrilled that it will be making an appearance this year as well. Puppet Up! is full of off-color improvisational comedy and charming professional puppetry.
There’s very little we can write about the content of this show that’s publishable for our audience here on MiceChat, but what we can say is that if you’re a “mature audience,” it’s one of the most hysterical productions we’ve seen, and it’s a different show every time, so we keep going back.
The show has been changed up since last year in terms of returning acts. The popular James Bond-esque theme song and the looping puppet video have returned, but there’s also a fun segment that features an unsuspecting audience member.
And who can resist the crazy hot dog puppets they use? We will not be describing the scene acted out here, but all we can say is that it was incredibly funny.
RETURNING ENTERTAINMENT – Conjurers: Dark Magic
The Bird Cage Theatre is the home of comedy and magic at Knott’s Scary Farm. This is a fun place to see some illusions and take a break from all the thrills and chills around the park.
Retiring Shows
Not Returning: Invitation to Terror
After years of Mystery Lodge sitting empty, the Pepper’s Ghost projection theater returned last year with a brand new show. This show was designed to be equal parts funny and scary. Sadly it will not be returning since the space is used for the new Grimoire maze.
Not Returning: Wicked Drums
This was another new offering from Scary Farm last year. It fit into The Hollows scare zone in Camp Snoopy, where witches are drumming up some ancient magic with audience participation. We stumbled into this show on accident after leaving the Pumpkin Eater maze and watched a few minutes of it. There were lots of audience members getting up and leaving. Honestly, we’re glad to see this removed from the entertainment lineup.
Not Returning: Doce de la Noche
The scare-free dance party in Fiesta Village will not be returning this year because the whole Fiesta Village is behind construction walls! The performers are now a part of Carnaval du Grotesque.
Scary Farm Attraction Overlays
Scary Farm isn’t just mazes and scare zones— it does take place in a theme park after all! There are two rides that get a Halloween makeover in the park… one being significantly scarier than the other.
Calico Candy Mountain Mine Ride
This year, the Knott’s team really plussed this attraction up. Between a massive amount of new props and additional show elements, the classic Mine Train feels fresh for Halloween.
While the daytime version is saccharine sweet, during Scary Farm there is an added horror element. The Pink Fairy lures innocent, unsuspecting children into the mine only to turn them into candy! This concept was introduced last year, and this year added new projections and sound elements to the show scene.
Although it isn’t listed in the Scary Farm attractions, it definitely is one. Don’t sleep on this during your Scary Farm visit!
Timber Mountain Log Ride: Halloween Hootenanny
This isn’t a scary overlay, but more a charming (albeit quirky) one. An array of monsters (that eventually form the Calico Coffin Creeper Band) have taken over the log ride, and you get to follow their antics throughout the attraction. Plus, it’s got a really catchy tune from Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies that plays the whole time.
Halloween Hootenanny has definitely shaped up to be a Knott’s classic.
If you don’t mind getting a little wet, this is a good attraction to get your mind off the scarier things of the night.
Knott’s Scary Farm Food
In between cursed books and vampire slaying, Knott’s has introduced a huge selection of food and beverages this year. Unafraid of theming their food with terms like “decomposing” or “Murder Us,” they’ve outdone themselves making everything look spooky or perhaps a bit grotesque.
On the surface, this Chicken and Spicy Sausage Gumbo looks like a standard fare but is garnished with frog legs. It looks like a frog has jumped straight into your soup.
How about these Spooky Crabby Sushi Rolls with what looks like spider legs all over them?
Or a Vodka Strawberry Lemonade with a syringe stuck in it?
While everything may look spooky, it tastes delicious. We were able to try a few items— the Spooky Crabby Sushi Roll, Ghouls Mac and Cheese with Steak Bites, and the Pecan Pie Brownie Bomb stood out to us as excellent picks. We’re excited to try some more and find new favorites during this Halloween season.
The best part is that if you’re planning to visit the park before braving the fog in the evening, many of the food items will be available on the Dining Plan!

Into The Fog: A Scary Farm Tribute Art Show
The Into The Fog: A Scary Farm Tribute Art Show is yet again full of scary (good) original art. This is one part exhibit and one part shop. You can purchase original art or prints of your favorite pieces. There are a few creative works this year, like this cool lenticular Forsaken Lake portrait set.
Some familiar names like Richard Wallace, Jeff Delgado, and Sam Carter have returned with some gore-gous new art.
We also couldn’t help but love this piece based on The Depths.

Scary and Spooky Merch
Knott’s is bringing along a slew of new Spooky and Scary Farm merchandise this Halloween season, including a few rather interesting items. Or perhaps…oddities is the correct term? They’re quite unlike what Knott’s has done before, especially this incredible tiki mug. It features the key monsters in the Scary Farm lineup.
We’re certain this is going to sell out quickly, it’s such a unique, interesting, and collectible item.
The other oddity is this gigantic hat. It’s made in collaboration with a company called Noggin Boss, and is simultaneously unexpected but also exactly the kind of wacky thing we expect from Knott’s.
The hat will come with either the Knott’s Berry Farm or Knott’s Scary Farm logo.

Scary Farm Chaperone & Bag Policy
This is a major change from previous years, so you’ll want to read this.
Due to recent problems with underage guests at Knott’s Berry Farm, the park has extended its weekend chaperone policy to all nights of Knott’s Scary Farm. This means that all guests 17 and younger must be accompanied by a chaperone who is at least 21 years old; one chaperone may accompany no more than five guests 17 and younger. Although, Knott’s is offering complimentary admission to any chaperone accompanying five minors. This is a significant change for Scary Farm, and we expect similar policies to be in place for other Halloween events.
In addition to the chaperone policy, there is also a new bag policy that is being implemented for Scary Farm. Guests will not be permitted to bring bags larger than 6.5″ x 4.5″ x 2″ into the park. This goes for purses, backpacks, diaper bags, and all other bags during the event. And as usual, all bags will be searched prior to entry.
