BOOOOOOO! This 2020 Halloween Haunt has been canceled at Knott’s Berry Farm. The Halloween season is shaping up to be very different from previous years, and certainly filled with fewer jump scares.

Jon Storbeck, Knott’s Vice President and General Manager, shared this in an overall update regarding the park’s operations today:

Regrettably, due to continued operating restrictions related to the pandemic, we have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel our highly anticipated 2020 Knott’s Scary Farm event. The unique features of Scary Farm will not allow us to operate within the constraints recommended by the CDC and public health experts.  We know that this news is disappointing, but we look forward with great enthusiasm to making 2021 Knott’s Scary Farm our best year ever.

Knott’s Scary Farm, similar to other haunt-style events, uses horror-themed mazes with scare actors coming in close proximity with guests to create a tense atmosphere. However, that experience just doesn’t translate well in a COVID-19 situation that requires at least 6-feet of distancing between all parties. We were hoping that Knott’s could create a modified Scary Farm experience for Halloween, especially given how creatively they are using the park for a new food festival, but it must not have been feasible. However, in the attempt to keep public safety a priority, we’re glad that Knott’s is acting with caution.

At this time, there still has been no guidance from California government officials regarding the reopening of theme parks. As such, SoCal theme parks have needed to cancel upcoming events. Disneyland and Disney World have canceled their massively popular Halloween parties, Universal has nixed its Halloween Horror Nights, and The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor has been rescheduled for next year. There have been no updates from SeaWorld or Six Flags regarding their plans for Halloween events, but the writing is now on the wall.

While 2020 has been filled with unexpected and unprecedented situations, there’s still a light at the end of the tunnel. Knott’s extended all 2020 Season Passes and add-on products through 2021, and they’re still planning on celebrating their rescheduled Knott’s 100th Anniversary next year. Plus, there’s the expanded Taste of Knott’s outdoor festival coming later this month.
