Hot on the heels of Dole Whip Day, where Disney took the spotlight, today is National Ice Cream Day. And this year, it’s Universal’s turn. When it comes to creative frozen treats, we think Universal ice cream has quietly claimed the crown for the most diverse and imaginative lineup in the theme park world. From DreamWorks Land’s technicolor cones to Epic Universe’s celestial sundaes to Toothsome’s gravity-defying milkshakes, Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood have become an ice cream lover’s paradise… and we have the sugar rush to prove it.

So, grab a spoon and let’s get started!

Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort boasts some of the most creative (and delicious) ice cream options around, so why not start at the top?

Trolls Treats

Almost immediately after DreamWorks Land opened at Universal Studios Florida, the colorful cones at Trolls Treats became social media stars, especially Poppy-licious Pink (pink lemonade soft serve with flower sprinkles) and Brozone Berry (huckleberry soft serve with green leaf sprinkles).

If You Like Piña Coladas

And we do! The Piña Colada Sundae at Chill Ice Cream in Marvel Super Hero Island at Universal Islands of Adventure is made with Dole Whip pineapple sorbet, coconut cream, shredded coconut, and pineapple chunks.
Not a coconut fan? (We won’t hold it against you.) Try the Strawberry S’mores soft serve sundae, made with Dole Whip strawberry sorbet, chocolate fudge, marshmallow fluff, chocolate chips, and graham cracker crumbs, or the Lime Tart soft serve sundae, made with Dole Whip lime sorbet, caramel, graham cracker crumbs, and whipped topping.

Fruity Fusion

The Waturi Fusion at Koka Poroka Ice Cream Kona, a walk-up window at Universal’s Volcano Bay, is a longtime fan favorite, and we can see why. Who wouldn’t love a swirl of four fruity soft serve flavors: banana, blue raspberry, orange, and strawberry?

Epic Eats

Everything at Universal Epic Universe is epic — and that includes the ice cream. The Frosted Owl sundae at Frosty Moon in Celestial Park layers chocolate hazelnut and vanilla ice cream with marshmallow topping, graham crackers, and a toasted marshmallow, all served in a souvenir owl cup.

But don’t miss the three specialty milkshakes at Satellite Shakes:

• Captain Cacao’s Starlight Voyage – Chocolate shake with rich ganache, marshmallow, blackberry syrup, and praline crunch, finished with chocolate whipped topping, a blue starlight ribbon, and Captain Cacao’s signature hat.
• Astronomer’s Strawberry Shortcake – Strawberry shortcake shake with sweet crumble and bright strawberry ribbon, finished with whipped topping and Pop Rocks.
• Stargazer Cookie Butter – Vanilla bean shake with Biscoff cookie butter and buttery crumble, finished with whipped topping and celestial sprinkles.

Universal Studios Hollywood

The California theme park may be small, but it’s mighty — with several decadent ways to celebrate National Ice Cream Day (and every day).

Mmmm… Ice Cream

Phineas Q. Butterfat’s Ice Cream in Springfield at Universal Studios Hollywood serves Simpsons-themed sundaes, including Chief Wiggum’s Most Wanted Sundae, made with a Lard Lad’s chocolate donut topped with vanilla soft serve, chocolate sauce, and chocolate cookie crumbs, and Bart’s Butterthinger, made with vanilla soft serve topped with butterscotch sauce, chocolate sprinkles, and chopped Butterfinger pieces.

Coast-to-Coast

Some frozen treats are so great that they can’t be limited to just one coast.

Butterbeer Ice Cream

While the Wizarding World’s signature sweet treat can be enjoyed in many forms, our favorite is the Butterbeer Ice Cream at Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida, served in a cup or waffle cone.

Florean’s West Coast outpost in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at Universal Studios Hollywood also serves soft serve Butterbeer ice cream in a cup or waffle cone.

No Theme Park Ticket Required

Thankfully, you don’t need to go through the turnstiles to enjoy ice cream at Universal Orlando Resort or Universal Studios Hollywood.

Universal Orlando Hotels

You can find ice cream at all of the Universal Orlando hotels, but these dedicated ice cream shops are our go-tos:

Shakes Malt Shoppe at Cabana Bay Beach Resort is a ’50s-style malt shop that serves ice cream by the scoop as well as classic sundaes (vanilla or chocolate ice cream, hot fudge or caramel topping, whipped cream, cherry), brownie sundaes (Better Brownie Batter ice cream, chocolate chunk brownie, hot fudge, whipped cream), and of course, banana splits (chocolate, banana pudding, and strawberry ice creams, hot fudge, caramel, strawberry topping, banana, whipped cream) — all with a cherry on top!

For a more international ice cream experience, Gelateria at Portofino Bay Hotel offers a selection of artisan gelato and sorbets with a view of the bay. You can even order the popular Italian pick-me-up, the affogato — your choice of gelato topped with a shot of espresso.

Last but certainly not least, Emack & Bolio’s at Hard Rock Hotel serves Boston’s award-winning ice cream.

Toothsome East & West

We can’t talk about ice cream without mentioning the over-the-top shakes at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen at Universal CityWalk Orlando (though their sundaes are equally decadent).

Our standard milkshake orders are the Heavenly Hazelnut (Nutella ice cream, hazelnuts, Nutella, cocoa powder, whipped topping); the Espresso Buzz (coffee ice cream, espresso, chocolate espresso beans, whipped topping, maraschino cherry); and the Right Side Up (vegan pineapple upside-down cake, brown sugar, caramel, pineapple, oat milk whipped topping) — the only vegan shake on the menu.

The smaller but equally delicious milkshake menu at Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen in Universal CityWalk Hollywood features unique combinations like the Carnival Key Lime (Key lime ice cream, raspberry sauce, green apple rock candy, whipped topping, sprinkles, frosted animal crackers); Jacques’ Caramel Contraption (dulce de leche vanilla ice cream, salted caramel, chocolate-covered bacon, whipped topping, pretzels); and the popular Neapolitan Shake (strawberry sorbet, vanilla and chocolate ice creams, mini cannoli, chocolate-covered strawberry, strawberry shortcake crumble, chocolate and vanilla whipped topping).
