It was a colorful week at the Disneyland Resort, with crowds turning out in blue for Bluey and yellow for the Savannah Bananas.

We’ve also got ticket details for D23: The Ultimate Fan Event this August, spring character dining news, and a fresh roundup of construction projects across the resort.

So let’s get this show on the road…

Bluey Shakes the Blues

After an extra-chaotic opening day last Sunday, Bluey seems to have settled into a groove at her new home at the Fantasyland Theatre.

The experience is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (because that’s the “school day” for Bluey and friends). Guests can enter at any point during that window, as the experience runs continuously rather than as a traditional start-to-finish show. Depending on when they arrive, they may catch dancers and a live band on stage, or interact with Bluey and Bingo, pose for photos, and play games with cast members… or some combination of it all.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

Last Sunday, lines for the opening day of “Bluey’s Best Day Ever” stretched nearly to the castle as parents and kids waited in the hot sun to see the popular preschool star (and the interactive games were scrapped to allow for more guests to be seated in the theater). Luckily, things settled down considerably on Monday, and we were able to walk right into the theater for the 3:10 p.m. show.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

On Thursday, we were held at the entrance for about 10 minutes before being seated, so we missed the very start of the 3:10 p.m. show.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

We’ve been told the experience is formatted so no matter what time you arrive, you’re “right on time,” and they expect guests to come and go throughout each scheduled performance time, and join the fun whenever they get there.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

There are two different 40-minute shows and five show times are scheduled throughout the day, but it’s a good idea to check the entertainment schedule for any changes since they’re still evaluating how to make improvements to the new experience.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

Before the official start time for each show, Bluey and Bingo engage with the audience and pose for selfies from a ramp in front of the stage, but this is being called a wave-and-play rather than a meet-and-greet, so plan accordingly (and prepare kids that they won’t be able to hug Bluey… at least not yet).

During the show, Bluey and Bingo are joined onstage by musicians and performers.

The interactive games between performance times were also back on Monday afternoon.

The new Bluey-themed food and drinks at Troubadour Tavern have been extremely popular (especially the Pizza Girls baked potato, which seems to be a social media favorite), so mobile ordering for Troubadour has been available on and off, and the standby queue can get very long.

Our Take on Bluey’s Best Day Ever:

It’s cute. It’s popular… but it’s also confusing guests. Lining up at the theater, you might expect to be seated for a traditional stage show… But that’s not really what Bluey is. There is some singing and dancing on a stage. But there are also games. Photo opportunities. And “wave and play” moments with the characters.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

The stage show portion runs over 30 minutes, but without a clear throughline, it quickly loses its audience. We watched dozens of guests get up and leave about 12 minutes into the show. And that exodus picked up steam as the show went on.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

We don’t think it’s a bad show, but we do think audiences are confused and don’t know what this experience is trying to be. It could benefit from some creative reorganization. Perhaps cutting the stage performance to no more than 12 to 15 minutes. Then invite the kids to come down to the stage area to play. That would be a lot easier to navigate and explain.

Guests want to be entertained. They want theater. But they don’t seem to understand these interactive play parties with minor stage elements that Disneyland has been using in this theater in recent years. It may be time to recalibrate and give the guests what they want… and can actually understand. The elements are already there. Cute characters. Fun music. Pull it together into a bite-sized show fit for the Kindergarten set.

Disneyland Goes Bananas

Last Thursday was Savannah Bananas Day at Disneyland as the Greatest Show in Sports took over the Happiest Place on Earth, including a cavalcade down Main Street U.S.A., performances in both Disneyland and California Adventure, and a merch pop-up in Downtown Disney.

Savannah Bananas Castle Performance

Thousands of Banana Ball fans waited in the unseasonably hot sun on Thursday to catch musical performances by the Savannah Bananas and Indianapolis Clowns, along with a few Disney pals, of course.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

First up were the Indianapolis Clowns.

Next were both team bands along with the Man-Nana’s (the Bananas’ “Dad Bod Cheerleading Squad”) and the team’s official mascot, Split.

Last, but certainly not least, the Savannah Bananas hit the “stage,” featuring new player (and former Broadway star), Derek Klena on lead vocals.

Savannah Bananas Cavalcade

The Bananas and Clowns took to the streets of Disneyland Park for a high-energy cavalcade with plenty of fun fan interaction along the way.

But that wasn’t the end of the show…

Savannah Bananas DCA Performance

In the afternoon, the teams crossed the esplanade for a second show at California Adventure. And there may have been even more guests packed into the World of Color amphitheater to see them.

Individually, these are small issues… but together they start to add up.

An entire strand of lights is burnt out on the train station, which is not exactly a great first impression for guests entering after dark.

Disneyland Update, DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Bluey Blues, Banana Bonanza & D23 Buzz

But when we zoom in, it’s more than just a single strand out… there are many burnt-out bulbs all over the building.

Even with all the rain we had last month, the grass roof on Ray’s Berets in Bayou Country is already dead again. Before the redo to match the theme of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the roof had been covered in hearty ferns, which were water-wise and never burned out. We really hope Disney will rethink using the more drought- and heat-sensitive grasses on the roof and plant something that doesn’t always die.

Still, if your churros are feeling a little boring lately, it’s right on par with many of the other cutbacks at the resort lately. Smaller menus. Simplification of product offerings. Even the fries are all the same across the resort. We hope someone alerts Disneyland’s new president about the dramatic decline in the quality and creativity of Disneyland’s food offerings resort-wide. We’ve noticed… have you?!
