Disneyland guests were treated to an epic surprise this week when Jamie Lee Curtis, Pink Slip, and fellow Freakier Friday cast took center stage at Disneyland. (For those unfamiliar with the Freaky Friday franchise, Pink Slip is a fictional band from the 2003 and 2025 films.) The sequel is a long time coming, with fans highly anticipating its debut, and original actors happily reprising their roles (with a fresh twist this time around). Based on the trailer, Freakier Friday looks like a lot of fun, and leaves you excited for more, but don’t take my word for it… Let’s hit rewind and discover how the journey began. Then, we’ll fast-forward to 2025 to explore the movie fans have been waiting over 20 years to see! Brace yourselves as we dive into the Freakiest Friday fun yet!

Freaky Friday Franchise
Before we switch places with 2003… we’d be remiss not to mention the original movie that first brought Freaky Friday to the big screen. That’s right! The film franchise didn’t begin in the early 2000s. It kicked off in 1976 with Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. That said, it all started with a book by Mary Rodgers, published in 1972.

The 1976 film’s success led to the launch of several other movies and spinoffs, both on television and in the theater.

That said, the 2003 version is arguably the most popular, winning its way into the hearts of fans who hoped for a sequel and ultimately got their wish.
Freaky Friday (2003)
On August 6, 2003, the Freaky Friday reboot starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan debuted… I know it seems like a lifetime ago. The story follows a mother, Tess Coleman (Curtis), and her teenage daughter Anna (Lohan), who find themselves worlds apart. (If you have a teen, you can certainly relate!) One Friday, something magical transpires, and when the two wake up the next day, they find themselves trapped in each other’s bodies! Although it’s a comedy, at the heart of this film is a story about empathy and understanding, as switching places forces the characters to experience life through each other’s eyes.

Freakier Friday (2025)
In the first movie, Jamie Lee Curtis’s character, Tess, is getting married, but this time, the shoe’s on the other foot. Years later, her daughter Anna is tying the knot, blending two families together, including her daughter, Harper, and a stepdaughter, Lily, who want nothing to do with any of it. But that may soon change, as history repeats itself, albeit a little bit differently.

The family foursome repeats the pattern, waking up to find themselves trapped in each other’s bodies, with Tess becoming Lily, and Anna becoming Harper. (You may have to read that twice!)

With their newfound status as adults, the teens attempt to leverage their authority to break up the coming nuptials. Chad Michael Murray returns to reprise his role as Jake, Anna’s former crush, who they hope will help make this a reality.

But he’ll have some stiff competition this time. Anna’s fiancé, Eric, is played by none other than Manny Jacinto, whom Star Wars fans will recognize from The Acolyte. Check out the freakquel’s trailer below:
A Film For the Fans Fueled By Its Actors
Not only have fans been anticipating a sequel to this beloved franchise, but original cast members have voiced a desire to continue the story. In a 2022 interview on The View, Jamie Lee Curtis shared that she had written to Disney about it, later revealing in 2024 that she actually called Bob Iger directly. The Oscar-winning actor, who was recently honored as a Disney Legend, is Hollywood royalty, and she also happens to be the daughter of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. If anyone could inspire fans to hope for a possible sequel, it was Curtis.

Lohan also expressed enthusiasm about returning to the franchise. In a 2022 interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she shared, “We would both be into it,” referring to herself and Curtis. She added, “I’m not gonna say no to Disney!”

The title for the follow-up film was announced in 2024 at D23 in Anaheim. Mission accomplished!

Freakier Friday Rocks Disneyland
In Freaky Friday, fans are introduced to Pink Slip, the fictional band Anna’s character is a member of, and in Freakier Friday, the band returns! To celebrate the sequel, the group surprised fans with a performance at Disneyland on July 15, 2025.

Jamie Lee Curtis (Tess Coleman), Julia Butters (Harper Coleman), Sophia Hammons (Lily Davies), Manny Jacinto (Eric Davies), and Chad Michael Murray (Jake) introduced the original band members: Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Danny Rubin, and Chris Carlberg at the Tomorrowland Terrace Stage.

Ok, that’s pretty cool; I’m really sorry I missed that, but if you did too, you can watch it below:
Later, the cast said cheese with Mickey and Minnie Mouse in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle in all its Disneyland 70th Anniversary splendor.
