Disney Lorcana Reign of Jafar – He Who Controls the Crown Rules All

Come on down, stop on by, hop a carpet and fly… to the latest Disney Lorcana set from Ravensburger! In Reign of Jafar, Agrabah’s infamous grand vizier has climbed the ranks to become Sultan of Lorcana. We’ll take a look at the new cards, exclusive products, and a twist on tournament play that might just land you a shiny new promo card.

The Reign of Jafar

The world of Lorcana is besieged by yet another villain in the eighth installment of the trending trading card game released worldwide on June 6, 2025. Ursula reached her tentacles around Lorcana in Set Four, and Jafar now extends his staff as the new sultan of Lorcana in Set Eight. This new set of more than 200 cards brings with it more of the same game mechanics, including the recently added elements of dual-ink cards and the ‘illusion’ character type.

Unlimited Cosmic Power!

Jafar’s quest to rule Lorcana began when he repaired the Hexwell Crown, the same powerful artifact that was broken with Ursula’s defeat a year ago. He used the Hexwell Crown to create his fortress over Archazia’s Island after our favorite Disney characters journeyed to Archazia’s Island in the last set..

Being the all-powerful sorcerer that he is, Jafar has magical minions (the recently introduced “Illusion” character type) to help him rule. These characters interact with Jafar in the game, but can be banished with an action card, even if other character types could survive it.

Illumineer’s Quest: Palace Heist

This year-end villains’ takeover of Lorcana comes with another version of the ‘Illumineer’s Quest,’ a stand-alone cooperative tabletop mode of playing Lorcana. In this game, all players unite in their efforts to defeat the big, bad villain. Unlike Deep Trouble, the Illumineer’s Quest that accompanied Ursula’s Return, this new version—Palace Heist—tasks you not with defeating the villain, but with stealing the Hexwell Crown to destroy it

But this does not mean the game is any easier. With four difficulty levels, it offers a solid challenge for both newcomers and seasoned players.

This year’s edition of the Illumineer’s Quest is vastly upgraded over the inaugural version; it’s packaged and produced up to the quality standards you’d expect from an industry leader game developer like Ravensburger. The game comes complete in a beautifully designed storage box, with a well-made, sturdy game board, quality tokens and game pieces, and two completely built players’ decks included. Any Lorcana deck can also be used with this game, and the game can be played with 1 to 4 players.

A Diamond in the Rough

Along with the Illumineer’s Quest, the full gamut of Disney Lorcana trading card game products is available in the Reign of Jafar set. 233 new cards are included in this set to build your most magical, or diabolical (eyes on you, Green Steel) deck yet! Available for purchase are booster packs and boxes, single-player prebuilt decks, the Illumineer’s Trove, card sleeves, and deck boxes with card art of Mickey – Wayward Sorcerer or Tinker Bell – Giant Fairy, and play mats featuring card art of Hades – Double Dealer, or Rescue Rangers Away! The designs are visually striking in person, with the high production values we’ve come to expect from Ravensburger. 

Conjure Up Some Fun!

The pre-packaged single-player decks are an excellent way for anyone new to Lorcana to pick up the game. Since in Disney Lorcana you build your own deck of at least 60 cards, these ready-to-play decks do all of the deck-building work for you, making it easy to sit down and play a game!

The Ruby Steel Mulan-Stitch deck is comprised almost entirely of new cards from Reign of Jafar and is based mainly on characters with strong stats controlling the board and a strategy of challenging your opponent’s characters to gain lore, advantage, and card draw.

Some stand-out cards from this deck that could make their way in core play include: Stitch – Alien Troublemaker, Mushu – Your Worst Nightmare, Prince John – Fraidy Cat, Beyond The Horizon, Quick Shot, Light The Fuse, and Mulan – Charging Ahead.

The Amber Amethyst Bruno Madrigal-Tiana deck relies on singing songs to gain lore and to weaken your opponent’s characters in play. Interesting cards from this deck include: Fantastical and Magical, Trials and Tribulations, Antonio Madrigal – Friend to All, Druun – Ravenous Plague, Alma Madrigal – Accepting Grandmother, Bruno Madrigal – Singing Seer, and Tiana – Natural Talent.

Disney Lorcana decks are based on two ink combinations, just as the two listed above show. Each ink is named after a precious element, such as Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Steel, and any combination of two of these is a viable deck for the standard game. Each ink has its own characteristics and style, and that leaves the choice up to the player to build the deck that best suits them.

A New Fantastic Point of View

Local game stores and Disney parks and stores were part of the pre-release weekend for Set Eight, Reign of Jafar, that started on May 30th. Several cards have already generated buzz in the competitive community, including the Sapphire Steel Ally package cards, Jasmine – Steady Strategist, Aladdin – Vigilant Guard, and Bernard – Over-Prepared (The Rescuers fans rejoice! We love our Bernie). Lady – Family Dog and Tramp – Dapper Rascal look to be strong inclusions in the aggressive Amber Emerald ‘Cherna-dog’ deck. The Steel ink is definitely gaining more strength with cards like Namaari – Single-Minded Rival, and Desperate Plan. Amethyst is definitely not left out with interesting cards like Monstro – Infamous Whale and the song card – Into The Unknown…

And while we might not have 101 yet, the puppies are becoming very plentiful in Lorcana.

A World of Possibilities 

All of these new cards and products bring to an end the second successful year of Disney Lorcana.

The pinnacle of this season is the first-ever Disney Lorcana Challenge World Championship tournament happening in just three weeks, June 28-29, at Walt Disney World! The top 28 players of official Disney Lorcana play will have to use these cards to develop and pilot their decks on a magical run to try to become the first ever Disney Lorcana World Champion!

You can take part in the tournament by watching the live stream from home, and later this year, you can participate in Infinity Weekend! This is the introduction to the new game format, Infinity Constructed, which allows players to use their entire collection to build a deck for competition. This format is an alternative option that avoids the rotation coming to Core Constructed play in September, when a number of older cards will no longer be permitted in competitive play. Additionally, Infinity Weekend, December 12-14, 2025, is your chance to obtain the alt-art non-foil promo A Whole New World card. The first 40 players who participate at their local game store will receive the promo card. These store tournaments will be Swiss Round Best of Three with an optional top cut.
