Ravensburger and their Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game share some huge news! Two years after Disney Lorcana by Ravensburger debuted in the Fall of 2023 with “The First Chapter” and following its exponential growth and success with casual fans and competitive players alike, the epic story now takes its next big step and turns the page to “The Next Chapter.”

The Next Chapter: Fabled
September 5, 2025, will debut the 9th Set of Lorcana: Fabled, and with it comes a change and an invigorated foundation of Disney Lorcana.
Fabled will introduce two NEW Card Rarities, which are sure to entice and “wow” collectors. Previous card rarities of Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, Legendary, and Enchanted will be joined by two new levels: Epic and Iconic! Epic has a scarcity level between Legendary and Enchanted. And Iconic will be the scarcest card rarity Lorcana has ever seen! More rare than Enchanted… much more! Not only will it be scarce, but there will only be two Iconic cards in the set. If you pull one of these, consider yourself blessed by the Lorcana gods, this aesthetic and art design is truly magical.

Iconic Cards will have a custom Lore Star foil pattern, 3D hot stamp effects, and special alternate artwork from the regular card that is borderless and covers the entire card. These cards will truly live up to their “iconic” name.
There will be 18 Epic cards in the Fabled set. Epic cards will not only have an “open air” artwork compared to the regular version of the card, but also a rainbow foil treatment, gloss treatment on the art, and holofoil treatment on the icons.

Including these two new rarities, the new Rarity levels, in order, are Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, Legendary, Epic, Enchanted, and Iconic. These two new card rarities will slot into the booster packs in the foil spot just like an Enchanted could; may the odds be ever in your favor.
Along with new Card Rarities, new characters will enter Disney Lorcana in Fabled as well…
We’re going to try to perform…the Perfect Cast! A Goofy Movie is taking a road trip to Lorcana! Powerline, Max, and Goofy are here to “Stand Out” and I can’t wait to see them “I2I!”

They will also be joined by the herald characters of the set, Mickey and Minnie! This set will have a return of staple Disney characters. Also returning in Set 9 are some of your favorite Glimmers from previous sets: Winnie the Pooh – Honey Wizard, Tinkerbell – Giant Fairy, and Stitch – Rock Star. Yes, Set 9 will have reprinted cards. While we don’t have specific numbers yet, Ravensburger has said that Set 9 will be a “heavy reprint” set with more than half the set being reprints, and with good reason…

Out with the Old, In With the New
Fabled not only brings novelties to Lorcana, it also ushers out some of the old… cards. Set Rotation has come to Lorcana. With the debut of Set 9, Sets 1-4 will no longer be legal in the primary competitive play format of Disney Lorcana, Core Constructed play. But the heavy reprint of cards from Sets 1-4 into Set 9 will still keep staples of some game mechanics and certain aspects of ink color identity.
Any card from Sets 1-4 that is reprinted as part of Set 9 will still be legal for Core Constructed play; you may still use that Set 1-4 printed card in play, it will work as if it is the Set 9 card, no need to purchase Set 9 versions of the card. Not only will it work like it, it will look exactly like it, other than the set and card number in the very bottom left corner of the card.

We can expect Set Rotation to happen once per year and remove the 4 sets from two years earlier. For example, when Set 9 debuts in Fall of 2025, Sets 1-4 will rotate out of Core Constructed play. In the fall of 2026, when Set 13 debuts, Sets 5-9 will rotate out, etc. This annual rotation was chosen to minimize the effects of the rotation process. Can you imagine how disrupted gameplay and deck construction would be if every three months you had to remove a full set of cards?

This reprint of cards in Set 9 intends to keep the competitive game thriving and encourage new strategies and fresh deck designs. It also gives players and collectors who weren’t involved at the debut of Disney Lorcana the chance to acquire cards from Sets 1-4 that have since skyrocketed in price because of the scarcity of earlier sets like Set 1, The First Chapter; I’m looking at you, Rapunzel – Gifted With Healing. These reprinted cards will also include at least one reprint of a fan favorite card as an Enchanted, follwo the honey drops below to see it. However, no cards that have previously had an Enchanted treatment will be reprinted with an Enchanted version.

Infinity Constructed
Do not fret, Disney Lorcana fans. All of your cards are still important and can still be used in a new organized play format, Infinity Constructed. Set Rotation does not affect Infinity Constructed, a competitive play format in which all cards are eligible to construct your deck. Infinity Constructed will also have its own separate ban list from Core Constructed play. This new format will bring another level of skill and game range to Disney Lorcana players.
A Collector’s Fairy Tale
Creativity and artistry are some of the main reasons why so many people love Disney. Disney fans are well-known for their collections of their favorite Disney characters and properties. Ravensburger is expanding the collecting aspect of Lorcana with new card rarities and also opening the door to new collectors with a brand new product: The Collection Starter Set. This product has everything you need to start your collection: 4 Booster packs from Fabled, a glimmer foil promo card of Tinker Bell – Giant Fairy, a 2×2 card portfolio, and a quick collector’s guide which will tell you what Lorcana is and what rarities and card types are available for your to find and collect.

New Markets and A New Tournament Season
Disney Lorcana expanded into new markets in 2025. North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, and China all had Lorcana products and tournaments this year, and more countries are coming to the game. Brazil, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand will join in the story with the release of Fabled in September. While Japan and China hosted official Disney Lorcana Grand Prix tournaments earlier this year, they will be a part of the new season of official Disney Lorcana Challenges coming in the third quarter of 2025. More details to come on that later…
A Whole New World

Disney Lorcana can’t move on to a new tournament season without finishing the first season… with the Disney Lorcana Challenge World Championships at Walt Disney World June 28-29, 2025! But best laid plans of ‘mouse’ and men oft go awry. While the entire Lorcana community, including Ravensburger themselves, initially planned for the event to be inclusive and open to the public, integrating all into the event as was done at the North American Continental Championship at Disneyland this past January, the World Championships has changed into being a VIP experience for only the 28 pre-qualified, invited players. The only guests allowed will be their plus-ones. There has been overwhelming support for the game and challenge season, and as we saw in August of 2024 at the D23 Expo: The Ultimate Fan Experience, the inclusivity and excitement for World Championships were already well into planning, but it at some point pivoted into this minimal, VIP event.

While this news has saddened a lot of Illumineers who were eager and hopeful for a season-ending celebration where they could reunite with players from around the world and join in our collective love of the game, I am glad to see the event date is fast-approaching, and we can all anticipate the second season of Disney Lorcana Challenges which will be officially announced at World Championships in June! The event will be streamed live on Twitch. Those watching should pay attention to learn how you can acquire the promo A Whole New World card. We’ll have this trusty and experienced commentator team to keep us on top of every play as we watch one skilled and clever player become the first ever Disney Lorcana Challenge World Champion!

But, Who Will Wear the Crown?
Disney Lorcana will award its World Champion a trophy, but an old menace seeks to wear the crown and rule over Archazia’s Island in Lorcana. Jafar has his eyes set on reforging the Hexwell Crown and strives to become High Sultan of Lorcana.

Jafar and his minions of Illusions flood Archazia’s Island, and the Reign of Jafar begins! More dual ink cards come into Lorcana with Set 8, Reign of Jafar, and also more cuddly creatures. We have another classic Disney franchise to welcome into Lorcana, Bambi!

Ravensburger takes another step forward in continuing its amazing artistry with the Set 8 Enchanted cards. The artists that Ravensburger selects and the guiding vision for the set are always top tier, and this set adds gold foil to the Enchanted cards.

Reign of Jafar will be available at all stores on June 6th, 2025, and pre-release events in local game stores begin on May 30th. The product lineup for this set is the same as earlier sets: Booster packs, Single Player Decks, Booster Boxes, and an Illumineer’s Trove.

The packaging and accessories show Jafar’s colors of Deep Red and signs of the Cave of Wonders with hues of golden sand. Just like Set 4, Set 8 also has a version of the Illumineer’s Quest. The Illumineer’s Quest is a co-operative game where players can team up to try and defeat the Villain, but this time it’s a Palace Heist! Unlike the previous Set 4 version, Deep Trouble, where you battle Ursula, in Palace Heist, your goal is to sneak into Jafar’s Palace and steal the Hexwell crown and destroy it for good. Illumineer’s Quest: Palace Heist comes ready to play with 2 pre-built decks, Jafar’s deck, a cardboard game board, deck boxes, damage counters, game components, and a container box.

Organized play also comes with a fleet of promo cards that can be acquired through various interactions at your local game store: buy a box promo, seasonal promo, pre-release promo, weekly play promo, and Set 8 will bring the first dual ink promo, the Set Championships promo Jafar – High Sultan of Lorcana that we saw earlier. Reign of Jafar products are available for pre-order online now!

One Jump Ahead
Even with all that news, there is still more for Illumineers coming. The Ravensburger Play Hub is getting closer to activation! Local game stores are the heartbeat of Trading Card Games, and Ravenburger and Disney Lorcana know that it’s the in-person connection and friendships that really build community. This online service will become the new hub for all things Lorcana. Players will be able to find local game stores, register for events, submit deck lists, sign up for pre-release events, and even have the option to pay event fees within this client, streamlining their experience. Game stores are in the process of signing up now, and the services and abilities of the Ravensburger Play Hub will be built up over time.
Delving Deeper
As 2025 nears its end, Lorcana’s story will continue blazing a trail with Set 10 due in Quarter 4 of 2025. ‘Whispers in the Well’ will bring a new type of Glimmer to Lorcana, Ethereal! Not much is known about this set yet, beyond the inclusion of Black Cauldron and Gargoyles.

And one more Disney Television character is confirmed, so “Let’s…Get…Dangerous!” He is the Terror that flaps in the night… Dark Wing Duck will enter Lorcana in 2026! Ravensburger has had a solidified and thorough expanse of Disney characters in Lorcana, and we’re very excited for this crime-fighting quack to continue the inclusion of characters from TV and lesser-known movies into Disney Lorcana as they are some of the Illumineers’ favorites (and probably the game designers’ as well).
2026 will also bring more to local game stores from Lorcana. Pre-release packs will be part of each set release sometime next year. No definitive date yet, but this will be a great way to bring more of the community into the local stores while also giving the players more from the game. The Reign of Jafar is looming in just a few weeks, so the card reveal season will heat up soon, but Be Prepared for big reveals about Fabled coming in August at GenCon.
Nothing Can Stop Us Now
While the past few months might not have had as much communication from Ravensburger as the Lorcana community would have liked, it is clear that the team has been reorganizing and planning for the long game hiring industry-experienced officers in Communication, Tournament Organization, Marketing, and Brand Management, and that adds to the creativity, game development, and artistry that has drawn and inspired Lorcana into the phenomenon that is became. With all this news from Ravensburger today, it’s clear that Disney Lorcana has a great big, beautiful tomorrow, and it’s just a dream away. I’m ready to turn the page to the next chapter.
