Deep in the wilds of Frontierland at The Happiest Place on Earth, a peaceful paradise resides. A living tribute to Walt Disney, Tom Sawyer Island was a particularly passionate undertaking, near and dear to his heart. Although three, true Tom Sawyer Islands reside within Disney Parks (Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland) Disneyland’s version has an extra sprinkling of magic. It’s the only one designed by Walt Disney himself.

If time at the Parks is limited, you may opt to pass on a visit, but in doing so, you’ll miss out on one of Disneyland’s hidden gems. Tom Sawyer Island is a beautiful area, full of wonderful Disney history. In addition, if you venture out at the right time, it’s a worthwhile escape from the hustle and bustle! Let’s enter the Disneyland turnstile together and delve into the backstory of Walt Disney’s childhood imaginings come to life! But first, here are some of the island’s highlights!

About Tom Sawyer Island
On May 25, 2007, the island’s name technically changed to “Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island”, an ode to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. That being said, most longtime fans still refer to it by its original title.
Situated in Frontierland, it debuted just short of a year after Disneyland’s opening, on June 16, 1956. To get to the wooded oasis, guests must board a raft on the Rivers of America waterfront near the Haunted Mansion. What a great start, with a tribute to Huckleberry Finn! My son used to love a trek to Tom Sawyer Island because it meant he could roam free and explore!

In addition to a spellbinding natural environment, there are caves to meander, bridges to cross, and interactive elements to play with. It’s a wonderful space to let children’s imaginations run free, which is exactly what Walt intended!
When my son was little, we’d often bring our lunch and enjoy it in a quiet spot. It was enchanting to feel like we were hidden away at Disneyland! Tom Sawyer Island is a fabulous place to take in some killer views of the Park. You can people watch and see rides and attractions from a different perspective…

watch the Disneyland Railroad roll by…

wave to the people on the Mark Twain Riverboat…

Gaze at those brave enough to take on the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes…

and catch sightings of the famous Disneyland ducks!

The addition of pirate elements around the island and in the caves has only enhanced the experience for my family. It’s a must-visit which is especially enjoyable for kiddos. But, how did it all begin?

Walt’s Priceless Personal Touch
Walt Disney spent several of his young childhood years in Missouri, which was also home to another titan of history, Mark Twain. Disney was a huge fan of the author, hence the island’s inspiration. Although Disney Legend Marvin Davis came up with a design for Tom Sawyer Island, Walt wasn’t happy with it. In order to make his dream a reality, Walt took it upon himself to imagine the design himself.

Davis shares that after taking the plans home overnight, Walt brought them in the next day emphatically stating, “Now that’s the way it should be.” The Disney Legend goes on to say, “The island was built according to Walt’s design.” Walt is responsible for all of the nooks and crannies within the enchanting space. Disney Legend Dick Irvine concurs, stating, “That island is all his. He didn’t let anybody help him design it.”

Disneyland’s Early Imaginings
From the very beginning of Disneyland’s conception, the idea of building an island within a river was at the forefront. Even before land was purchased for Disneyland in Anaheim, Walt was coming up with ideas for amusements next to the Disney Studios in Burbank. That tiny park would also have contained a river, an island, and a train, among other ideas.

At one time, they even considered displaying historic miniatures on the island, to be admired from the riverboat. But, ultimately, Walt wanted something to differentiate it from the rest of the Park. Although the rides and attractions within Disneyland offered immersive experiences, most were of a passive nature. So, he opted for a place where guests could map out their own journey. This idea blended seamlessly with the Tom Sawyer theme, making it the perfect backdrop. In Walt’s own words, he shares, “I put in all the things I wanted to do as a kid—and couldn’t.” What a magical idea!
