It’s the most wonderful time of the year at the Disneyland Resort, with Halloween festivities underway and Christmas just around the corner! As the holidays roll in, I’m reminded of an area of the Park that used to house some unique offerings. Simple, yet charming, Big Thunder Ranch was a hidden gem for families. During fall and winter, the understated area would come alive with photo ops and activities, similar to those found in California Adventure’s Paradise Gardens during spooky season. Although the space was destroyed to make room for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, its quaint appeal lives on through the memories of Disney fans. Let’s relive the simple life at Disneyland, by looking back at Big Thunder Ranch!

Big Thunder Ranch Throughout the Years
Big Thunder Ranch was located in the area where Fantasyland and Frontierland meet along the Big Thunder Trail. As you made your way off attractions such as King Arthur Carrousel or Casey Jr. Circus Train, it was a happy interim for families. Kids could run off some energy, roam free, and explore what felt like a small fair plunked in the middle of the Happiest Place on Earth. The area took its inspiration from working horse ranches of the 1880s. Among the offerings available to guests were a petting zoo, a western house, a stable, and a fan-favorite barbecue restaurant.

Big Thunder Ranch debuted on June 27, 1986. One of its quirky highlights included livestock from a Pony Farm backstage, out and about for guests to enjoy. Children could pet some of Disneyland’s sheep, goats, horses, and one very special animal! Hidden Mickey lovers enjoyed taking a gander at Mickey Moo, a cow sporting Mickey ears on her back! Kids could watch blacksmiths and harness makers in action as they worked their trades. Or, they could step inside the ranch house and get an idea of how people used to live. It was a unique experience to find at Disneyland!

Big Thunder Ranch underwent several reimaginings throughout its tenure. From 1996 to 1998, it transformed into a medieval village in honor of a Hunchback of Notre Dame show. Interestingly, from 1998 to 2004, Disney used the space for corporate meetings. In 2004, it morphed into a Home on the Range theme. But eventually, its original concept made a comeback.
In 2012, Disney shared that “new energy” would be coming to the area. Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree debuted on May 3, boasting music, dancing, crafts, and pin trading. Guests could also mingle with Disney characters dressed up in Western attire!
Fans bid their final farewell to Big Thunder Ranch on January 10, 2016, with the area closing the next day. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge officially debuted as its replacement on May 31, 2019.

Finger-Lickin’ Good Food at Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue
We can’t talk about Big Thunder Ranch without mentioning its beloved barbecue restaurant! Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue opened 6 months after the area premiered, on December 14, 1986.

Guests enjoyed outdoor seating and hearty comfort food delivered by chuckwagons! In 1996, the dining location transitioned into the Festival of Foods, in line with the Hunchback of Notre Dame theme. Its original name and theming returned in 1997 until it closed in 2001. In 2009, it became known as Celebration Roundup and Barbecue. The eatery closed on January 11, 2016, in tandem with the area.

If you were a fan of this rootin’ tootin’ dining location, here’s an official Disneyland recipe to help bring back some nostalgic memories!
Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue Cole Slaw
Serves 6 to 8
1/2 cup white-wine vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon coarse salt
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 cup olive oil
1 pound shredded green cabbage (about 1/2 large cabbage)
1 pound shredded purple cabbage (about 1/2 large cabbage)
2 carrots, shredded
Combine vinegar, sugar, salt, celery seed, paprika, black pepper, and cayenne in a blender; blend on low speed until sugar is dissolved.
With blender running, slowly pour oil through top of lid, processing until dressing is combined. Set aside.
Combine shredded cabbage and shredded carrots in a separate large bowl. Add dressing, tossing to combine. Refrigerate for 2 hours, tossing occasionally, before serving.

The Holiday Season at Big Thunder Ranch
During the holidays, Big Thunder Ranch came to life with festive decor, fun photo ops, crafts, and games. Here are some of my favorite blast from the past memories of the former area.
Halloween Time at Big Thunder Ranch
Festive photo ops were always in abundance during Halloween Time at Big Thunder Ranch!

The Disneyland Livery Stables Carriage would be all decked out for fall!

Kids enjoyed working on themed crafts at the signature red and white checkered tables.

These two Jack-o’-lanterns playing cards in the ranch house made for a spooktacular photo op!

There was a lot to do during the holidays. Guests could “Conjure a villain,” watch pumpkin carvers in action, see the characters, and even watch some entertainment.

Mickey was often in the area, and fans especially loved it when he was all decked out for Halloween and Christmas!

Christmas Time at Big Thunder Ranch
There’s nothing quite like Christmas at the Disneyland Resort and Big Thunder Ranch had all the trimmings, like this old-fashioned display located in the ranch house.

Kids could make their own ornaments and place them on a Christmas tree.

There were also some fun games for kids to participate in!
And we can’t forget characters like Chip ‘n Dale…

Reindeer Pluto…

The Mouse who started it all, Mickey…

And even Mrs. Clause herself!

The Springtime Roundup in the area transitioned from Valentines Day into Easter, with hearts, egg painting, characters in costume, and always plenty of crafts and entertainment.

Big Thunder Ranch holds many precious memories for Disneyland fans who appreciated its quaint appeal. It was indeed a memorable era, especially during the holiday season!
