After being announced last Summer, Super7’s ReAction Figures of Buzz Lightyear and his friends from Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear” were recently released. The series includes toys of Buzz himself, along with Sox, Alisha Hawthorne, and Mo Morrison. Super7’s ReAction Figures borrow the older look of action figures from many collectors’ childhoods, with somewhat simpler designs and fewer points of articulation than we generally see today. Here’s a closer look!

Where to Buy Super7’s Lightyear ReAction Figures

You’ll find these figures at Super7’s online store. You can purchase them individually for $20 each or get the bundle containing all four figures for $80:

The Packaging

Taking inspiration from toys of earlier eras, the packaging used is a simple cardboard backing with a plastic casing for the figure. The art style on the backing is simple, with an airbrushed look to the shading. Each character’s name is printed on their corresponding packaging, along with their rank in the movie (Buzz is “Space Ranger Alpha,” for example), which is a cute touch.

And once again, drawing from that retro vibe, the backside looks similar to those seen back in the day, with a message urging buyers to “collect them all” prominently displayed.

From the Early Enlistment Recruit Bundle

If you pre-ordered your figures last Summer through Super7’s Lightyear Early Enlistment Recruit Bundle (no longer offered, unfortunately), your figures arrived in this snazzy box-inside-a-box-inside-another-box. The art on these trio of boxes matches that found on the cardboard backing of the actual figures.

Also included was a set of four plastic figure stands. Interestingly, only three of the four figures use them (Sox is not compatible but thankfully doesn’t need it). The different color options are a fun inclusion, and I appreciate that the colors coordinate well with the figures that utilize them.

There are notches in the soles of the human figures’ feet to allow them to attach to the figure stands.

Lightyear ReAction Figure

We’ll begin with our leading man, Buzz. As you would expect, he is dressed in his spacesuit. The dome of his helmet does not open, but you can see inside without issue.

Buzz measures 3.75 inches tall. I would rate the paint job as “ok.” Interestingly, finer details like the controls and insignia on his suit look great. But other more generalized areas, like the back of his knees and the green portion of his pants, are not painted as accurately.

He comes equipped with his blaster, which is attached to his right gauntlet and is not removable. There are no loose accessories included, unlike the rest of his crew.

The joints’ range of motion is average. Although, Buzz would not be able to stay in this position without the aid of the stand, which, again, is exclusive to those who pre-ordered the set.

Thankfully, even without the stand, Buzz does an excellent job balancing himself in more basic poses.

Sox ReAction Figure

Sox was, far and away, my favorite of the figures in this set. The colorful companion robot has the greatest variety in movement, with joints at the base of his legs, tail, and neck (we’ll touch on the neck more a bit later). The paint job was most accurate on Sox than any other character, perhaps because of his simpler design. And he also came with the most interesting accessory, a PII Image Computer with a clamshell top.

This is the computer accessory when it is closed.

Even with a generally simple design, Super7 did a splendid job adding details to this small-scale figure. The robotic ridges on Sox’s back were included, along with smaller details like the cat-like toe-beans on the bottoms of his paws (I love that they added that in).

Being able to manipulate the Sox’s head and tail adds so much to the variety of poses at which you can display him. I had a lot of fun with this one.

Sox cocks his head ever so slightly in curiosity.

Sox is hard at work proofreading this article.

Alisha Hawthorne ReAction Figure

The details of Alisha Hawthorne’s outfit are the ones that I feel would be easiest to mess up in production but thankfully, my figure looked immaculate. I was especially impressed with the clean lines on the badges.

Alishaa also comes with a laser blade accessory that, with some effort, you can coax her into holding. Unfortunately, her joints were the stiffest of the group and I was nervous moving her left arm past a certain point because it felt like too much force was being used.

Additionally, I could not manage to keep Alisha standing upright without the aid of a pre-order bundle-exclusive stand.

Mo Morrison ReAction Figure

Mo suffers from an issue where some paint strays from the lines. The orange parts of his shoulders and boots are especially noticeable.

Mo comes packaged with a helmet and weapon. And while the helmet can rest atop his head, I could not get him to hold his weapon.

Mo’s range of motion is a tad better than Buzz’s. The joints also move more easily (not that there was a real issue moving Buzz’s joints).

And just like Buzz, Mo can stand on his own.

Final Thoughts

Super7’s Lightyear ReAction Figures will have a lot more appeal for toy collectors, especially those focusing on action figures. Unless you participated in the Early Enlistment Recruit Bundle and have the included backdrop assembled, most of the toys in this set don’t have much incentive to be out of the box. I appreciate that they are made in a retro style and, thus, generally have less articulation than the majority of figures we see nowadays. But because of it, they feel like they have less actual playability and are better suited to be displayed within their packaging.

However, the Sox ReAction Figure is an exception. Perhaps because he had more joints than the others, there was no shortage of poses for me to photograph him in. If you can only buy one figure from this set, make it Sox.
