Disney characters are no strangers to video games, but it’s not often that they get their own toy line. The successful game, Kingdom Hearts, for example, has only a few figures here and there with only a smattering of releases over the years. Disney’s latest mobile game, “Disney Mirrorverse”, is getting a lot more attention with McFarlane Toys (originated by famous comic book creator, Todd McFarlane best known for creating “Spawn”) delivering the goods in the mass retail arena, making it easy to find at your local Targets and Walmarts as well as online e-tailers such as Amazon and EntertainmentEarth.

Disney Mirrorverse, Bringing the Mirrorverse to Life: Disney Mirrorverse Figures Wave 1 from McFarlane Toys

For those not in the know, Disney Mirrorverse is a crossover mobile role-playing action game that debuted this year, allowing you to choose from a roster of characters from Disney and Pixar to create your team of guardians to battle and defeat an evil threat and defend the Mirrorverse. In this world, villains and heroes can join forces, creating some unlikely but fun pairings. These aren’t yours or your grandparents’ Disney characters. All have been redesigned and updated exclusively for the game.

Disney Mirrorverse Wave 1 Figures

McFarlane Toys has plans to release several waves of figures and you might have seen some of those announcements and figures in store already, but we’re going to start from the beginning here! McFarlane Toys was gracious enough to send over a few samples from Wave 1 for us to look at, and they include: Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Belle, and two versions of Jack Sparrow. They also sent us Donald Duck from wave 2 to round things out.

Disney Mirrorverse Packaging

The standard 5” releases (Mickey, Goofy, Belle, Donald) all come on a rectangular blister card and round plastic bubble, giving you a clear view of the character within.

An insert and trading card prominently tells you the character’s name as well as how they’d look in the game. The back of the card shows a silhouetted rendering of several of the Disney characters as well as images of other characters you’ll find in the current wave.

Jack Sparrow is in the 7” range and comes in a sharp-looking box with a window display. You might be wondering about the Fractured Jack Sparrow box containing the sticker that reads “McFarlane Gold Label Collection”. The Gold Label Collection features a number of highly limited figures across all of McFarlane Toys, but that just means there’s a more limited number of Fractured Jack Sparrow so if you see one, it might be a good idea to pick one up! The back of the box is similar to the standard card & bubble but it works. The side of the boxed figures features different artwork of the character, making it easy to spy who’s in the box when thumbing through the pegs at your local toy retailer.

The collectible art card shows you the character on the front and character biography and stats on the back.

Mirrorverse Mickey Mouse Figure

“As a boundless dreamer with eternal optimism, Mickey Mouse makes those around him feel like anything is possible. While many in the Mirrorverse seek to harness Stellar Magic, Mickey has already mastered it, calling upon its potent forces to protect those brave enough to fight alongside him.”

Disney Mirrorverse, Bringing the Mirrorverse to Life: Disney Mirrorverse Figures Wave 1 from McFarlane Toys

Your pal Mickey Mouse is equipped with a Star Crystal accessory that plugs into his right hand. Mickey has 10 points of articulation, but you’d be shocked that there are none in his legs. In fact, none of the smaller-scale figures have leg articulation, making them rather static. Mickey can turn his head & waist, double-jointed arm swivel, and wrist joints. The last two are on his heels, which doesn’t actually help him.

Mickey is sculpted in such a manner that his robes are part of what holds him up, with his tippy toes being the part that keeps him from falling forward. I get what the designers were trying to do here but he does tend to lean forward quite a lot, and I wouldn’t mind a more centered approach to it. Mickey’s flowing robes are of hard plastic, meaning it’s not going to be very flexible for posing.

The sculpt shows a very stern Mickey and it isn’t bad. Unfortunately, a seamline runs across his face which is noticeable up close. The paint and detail are pretty decent, and I especially like the accents on the back of his cape.

Disney Mirrorverse Goofy Figure

“Disaster seems to follow Goofy everywhere in the Mirrorverse, but he either doesn’t mind or doesn’t notice! Stellar Magic has greatly amplified his luck, so it doesn’t matter whether he uses a precision weapon or just tosses something over his shoulder, he always manages to hit his mark. Gawrsh!”

Goofy stands about the same height as Mickey despite their character differences. He also comes with a holster that can attach to his back as well as his boomerang (though, the boomerang does not fit in the holster).

Just like Mickey, Goofy does not have any leg articulation, but he can move his heels, neck, wrists, waist. He also sports double-jointed arms and a single elbow. Without leg articulation though, Goofy won’t do much besides stand there.

Disney Mirrorverse Belle Figure

“Intelligent and well-read, Belle’s love of books is matched only by her longing for adventure. In the Mirrorverse, Belle’s unconventional point of view has allowed her to discover hidden magic in her books, and cast a multitude of enchantments that heal and defend her allies when times get tough.”

Belle is equipped with her Rose Staff and has roughly 13 points of articulation; that’s more than Mickey and Goofy. The extra joints come in her elbows, giving her a little extra movement there but her cloak unfortunately restricts much of her upper movement in the arms.

Disney Mirrorverse Donald Duck Figure

“Donald is a sailor on the sea of fate, sometimes temperamental, sometimes daring, sometimes both! But now he can transform his temper into raw power, giving him the strength and fortitude of a battleship. Anchors aweigh!”

While Donald is potentially my low-key favorite in this line, he’s maybe the most limited in articulation, with only movement in his neck and arms. With his hefty axe that only fits in his right hand, Donald is another figure that can do no more than stand around. But the armor and design is my favorite so far.

Disney Mirrorverse Jack Sparrow (Standard and Fractured) Figure

“In the Mirrorverse, Captain Jack Sparrow’s life rises and falls with the tides – blessed with incredible luck, yet burdened by numerous curses. But Stellar Magic has allowed him to turn things to his advantage, channeling the power of his curses to help his allies and harm his foes, all in roguish defense of the Mirrorverse.”

“Summoned from The Fractured Mirror, this corrupted version of Captain Jack Sparrow has no love for rollicking adventure, only a single-minded desire to destroy the Stellar Mirror and the Guardians protecting it!”

Both Jack Sparrow releases share the same sculpt and accessories, but with different paint applications. Standing much taller than the rest at 7″, Jack Sparrow is designed with “ultra” articulation, roughly 18 points of articulation… the beauty of it is that he has leg, knee, heel and toe articulation! It’s a shame the rest of the line isn’t treated this way as it does feel like he’s in a completely different toyline. Jack comes with a dark energy accessory that slides over his skeleton arm.

Final Thoughts On Disney Mirrorverse Figures

Overall these figures are sculpted well but if you play the game, you know what these characters can do. Without leg and knee articulation, these figures are very limited in what they can do and how they can hold their accessories. In a way, I’d rather these figures have zero articulation and be posed in a dynamic and iconic way, not too different than how Disney Infinity figures looked. Fans of the game’s design, however, will appreciate that this toyline exists at all, and if it does well, has the potential to last for a very long time.

It is refreshing to see a Disney/Pixar line with characters from all over in one release and there’s plenty more characters to come, including Captain Hook, Maleficent, Baymax, and Anger.
