DISNEYLAND PARK PROJECTS

Disneyland Project Tracker, UPDATED! Disneyland Resort Project & Rumor Tracker

Main Street Magic Shop enhancements  |  Main Street, U.S.A.

Project Status:  Rumored.

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown.

Project Timeline: Houdini’s Magic has been the vendor operating the Main Street Magic shop since 2009.  Vanishing Inc. Magic acquired Houdini’s Magic in 2022 and has taken over the vendor operations of the Disneyland location.

Project Description:  As part of the change in ownership, Disney and Vanishing Inc. Magic are expected to be working together to infuse new magic at the Main Street, U.S.A. shop.

More information:  MiceChat coverage of the Main Street Magic Shop ownership change

Expanded Haunted Mansion  |  New Orleans Square

Project Status:  Announced.  Construction began in early January 2024 with the major portion of the project to start on January 22 when the attraction is confirmed to close.

Reopening Date:  We are expecting a reopening in the second half of 2024.

Project Timeline: On August 29, 2023, Disney officially announced plans to expand the Haunted Mansion grounds into the park-like area between the Haunted Mansion and Tiana’s Palace restaurant as well as near the exit to the attraction.   The project is scheduled to begin January 2024, after the seasonal run of Haunted Mansion Holiday.  The enhancements are expected to open later in 2024.

Project Description:  The Haunted Mansion project will bring expanded queue space for the popular attraction as well as a permanent new retail shop at the exit of the attraction.

      • Expanded outdoor queue: The expanded outdoor queue will feature enhanced theming. Disney said the expanded queue will feature elements that tie into the story of a “prosperous sea captain” that is rumored to have originally built the Mansion as well as feature “new gardens inspired by Master Gracey, Madame Leota and the one-eyed cat.”
      • Plaza enhancements:  The expanded outdoor queue will take up some of the space currently occupied by the round Magnolia Gardens park area (with its beautiful old trees and a Spanish fountain). Because of this, the area will be re-imagined as what Disney described as “a new, elegant park-like setting” that will be “a place to relax and enjoy the ambiance and live entertainment under the shade of new and historic trees.”  It is expected that the bandstand at Tiana’s Palace will be reworked so guests can enjoy the live band from the patio of Tiana’s Palace as well as the plaza between the restaurant and the Haunted Mansion queue.
      • New retail shop:  A new permanent retail shop will be built at the attraction’s exit.  Disney said it would be themed as the Haunted Mansion’s carriage house, which belongs to Madame Leota.
      • New elevator exit for guests with disabilities:  A new elevator will be added to the Haunted Mansion for guests with disabilities. We expect it to be located near what is currently the crypt along the backside of the attraction’s switchback queue. This addition will help streamline loading and unloading procedures for guests with disabilities, helping improve the experience for all guests.
      • Haunting new magic and improved infrastructure:  The attraction’s extended closure is due in part to much-needed behind-the-scenes work.  It is rumored that a major refurbishment to the attraction’s huge graveyard scene is planned and will address some critical infrastructure work to the 55-year-old attraction.  While no major show changes are expected in the graveyard, the scene will undergo a major infrastructure refurbishment and look brand new when it reopens. The graveyard will feature freshly refurbished Animatronics, new scrims, and refreshed special effects. But there’s even more magic that could be on the way. It is rumored that the beloved hitchhiking ghosts could be getting a major refresh that will bring a technology update to the ride’s iconic finale!

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure  |  Critter Country

Project Status:  In progress.  Splash Mountain officially closed May 31 to begin construction on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

Expected Opening Date:  Late 2024.

Project Timeline: Following intense social unrest in America during the summer of 2020, the Disney Parks Blog announced the Splash Mountain attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World would be re-themed to “Princess and the Frog.”   The project is led by a team of Black women creatives at Disney Imagineering. Disney Legend and original Splash Mountain designer, Tony Baxter is consulting.  On July 1, 2022, the Disney Parks Blog announced the attraction’s official name, “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.”  The opening timeline of “late-2024” was also announced.  On December 2, 2022 Disney officially announced the Splash Mountain attraction in Walt Disney World would permanently close on January 23, 2023 to begin its transformation into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.  On April 12, 2023, Disneyland announced its Splash Mountain would permanently close on May 31, 2023 to make way for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.  The attraction reached five-hour wait times on its final operating day on May 31.

Project Description:  Splash Mountain attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will receive complete rethemings based on Disney’s 2009 animated film, “The Princess and the Frog.”  The attraction will take place after the events of the film.  Tiana’s success with her restaurant has led to her opening a food co-op.  Riders will follow Princess Tiana into her salt mine-turned-food co-op, with the journey culminating in a thrilling drop into the bayou for a mardi gras celebration.  The attraction will feature new music inspired by the film’s original score and soundtrack.  Tiana will sport an all-new look in the attraction, inspired by fashion trends of the 1920s while representing the character’s own personality.  The journey will feature familiar characters along with many brand new faces. Voice performances by the original cast, including Anika Noni Rose, Michael-Leon Wooley, Jennifer Lewis, and Bruno Campos, will be featured. On April 12, Disney announced Mama Odie will appear in the attraction as “the catalyst” to the “magic” that riders will experience in the attraction.  New special effects will include lighting and mist effects, used to “paint” the environments with “true bayou magic.” No significant changes are expected for the track layout, ride duration, or thrill factor.

Replacement for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Pooh Corner  |  Critter Country

Project Status:  Unsubstantiated Rumors.

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown but becoming increasingly unlikely and subject to removal from this tracker.

Project Timeline: Following the announcement of the “Princess and the Frog”-themed re-theme of Splash Mountain in 2020, rumors and speculation on the future of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh began to circulate.

Project Description:  The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh has been critically panned and under-attended since its debut in 2003.  With Tiana’s Bayou Adventure shifting the theme of Critter Country more towards New Orleans Square, a thematically appropriate replacement for the Pooh attraction has been rumored.  A replacement of the Pooh attraction would likely include a new theme for the adjacent Pooh Corner retail space.  No official announcements have yet come from Disney.

Fantasyland Attraction Enhancements  |  Fantasyland

Project Status:  Rumored.

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown.

Project Timeline:  Fantasyland has been receiving major enhancements to its various attractions since Alice in Wonderland in 2014.  Peter Pan, Snow White, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, and Storybook Land have all received notable updates since then.  Enhancements or replacements for remaining attractions are rumored to be in development.

Project Description:  Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride and Pinocchio’s Daring Journey are the two remaining Fantasyland dark rides that have not received major enhancement packages.  The two dark rides could receive enhancements or be removed and replaced entirely in coming years.  Additional enhancements to Storybook Land Canal Boats are also possible, following the last major addition of Arendelle from “Frozen” in 2014.

New Star Tours destinations featuring Ahsoka  |  Tomorrowland

Project Status:  Announced

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown.

Project Timeline:  Announced in September 2023 at Destination D23 in Orlando, FL, Disney announced new destinations will be coming to the Star Tours attraction and feature appearances by popular character Ahsoka.  Disneyland announced new destination for Star Tours as part of the returning Season of the Force in 2024.  Season of the Force begins at Disneyland April 5-June 2.

Project Description:   The announcement described the changes as “new adventures” coming to Star Tours that will feature Ahsoka from the hit Disney+ series.

New Tomorrowland Project  |  Tomorrowland

Project Status:  Rumored.

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown.

Project Timeline:  Previously expected to be announced at D23 Expo 2022, Disney has not yet announced the project.  It is heavily rumored to be in active development at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Project Description:   A significant reimagining of Tomorrowland with updated aesthetics, enhanced attractions, and returning classics.

        • Reimagined gateway to Tomorrowland:  As part of the New Tomorrowland project, a re-imagined gateway to the land is expected.  Plans for a new entry to the land were announced in 2019 and partially constructed but have been stalled. Rumors suggest the previously-announced gateway may have been scrapped and a new, plussed entry to the land could be in the works.
        • Reimagined Space Mountain:  Rumored — Space Mountain is expected to be getting major updates and upgrades.  Space Mountain last received a major overhaul in 2005, as part of Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary.  The project included a complete rebuild of the track and brand new show and audio.  It has since received temporary overlays including Rockin’ Space Mountain (2007), Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy (2009-2018), and Hyperspace Mountain (2015-2022).
        • Return of the Peoplemover:  Rumored —Unsubstantiated rumors hint that a Peoplemover-type transportation system could be returning to Tomorrowland as part of the Tomorrowland re-imagining project.
        • New Star Tours Destinations: Rumored — Disney Imagineer Scott Trowbridge has hinted that Disney may not be done adding new destinations to Star Tours. And with so many recent Star Wars series on Disney+, including the addition of the popular baby Grogu and Mandalorian, we could see enhancements sooner rather than later.

DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE PROJECTS

Disneyland Project Tracker, UPDATED! Disneyland Resort Project & Rumor Tracker

Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration! — new Pixar-themed parade / Performance Corridor

Project Status:  Announced in November 2023.

Expected Opening Date:  Debuts April 26 as part of Pixar Fest.

Project Timeline:  In November 2023, Disney announced the full lineup of events coming to the Disneyland Resort in 2024.  This announcement included the return of Pixar Fest.  As part of the returning festival, Disney California Adventure was announced to receive the new “Better Together” Pixar-themed parade.

Project Description:  “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” is described as an “all-new daytime parade” for Disney California Adventure.  Concept art depicts parade units featuring the Luxo Jr. lamp and Red Panda Mei from “Turning Red.”

Avengers Multiverse E-Ticket  /  Avengers Campus

Project Status:  Announced at D23 Expo 2022.

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown.

Project Timeline:  Disney announced the major E-Ticket attraction for Avengers Campus at the 2019 D23 Expo.  In March 2022, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the attraction was in a “holding pattern” due to “cash flow” issues related to the extended park closures.  At D23 Expo 2022, Disney officially announced a new “third attraction” for Avengers Campus, which would feature a new concept and ride system than the previously-announced attraction.

Project Description:  Little was known about the attraction that was announced at D23 Expo 2019, but it was expected to utilize all-new ride technology.  The ride would have taken guests aboard the Quinjet into a major battle in Wakanda.  The attraction’s facade, the Avengers HQ, is already constructed at the back of Avengers Campus. The Avengers HQ building currently serves as a photo backdrop for character meet-and-greets and acts as an elevated stage for stunt shows and character sightings.  At D23 Expo 2022, Marvel Studio head and Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro announced the attraction will take riders into the Marvel multiverse.  “Every character from every when” will be present, according to Feige.  Riders will join up with a multiverse of heroes to defeat a new villain, King Thanos. At Destination D23 in Orlando, FL, in September 2023, Disney officially shared new concept art of the attraction’s ride vehicle. The ride vehicle was described as a “world-jumping vehicle” that features “features a design that combines elements of Tony Stark’s time-suits with Xandarian jump points and Wakandan technology.”  In an Instagram post, Walt Disney Imagineering noted more information about the “physical worlds of tis epic attraction” will be revealed later.  The post said Imagineers are bringing the attraction to life with “a blend of large-scale built environments and immersive media.”

AVATAR experience to replace Hollywood Land

Project Status:  AVATAR Experience is confirmed, Hollywood Land location is unconfirmed.

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown.

Project Timeline:  In development and approval limbo for over a decade, a major overhaul for the Hollywood Studios portion of Hollywood Land has long been expected but repeatedly stalled. On February 8, 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced a new “AVATAR experience” would be coming to the Disneyland Resort soon.  On March 7, D23 published an article with quotes from AVATAR: The Way of Water cast members reacting to the news of the expansion.  The article noted the announcement was “a long time coming, since Walt Disney Imagineers have been working to imagine more ways to bring Avatar stories and characters to life since 2017.”   In November 2023, during the “Imagineering Lunch & Learn” event at IAAPA, a Disney Imagineer said the AVATAR project was going into Disney California Adventure but Disney quickly walked back the statement, saying no official statement on the new AVATAR experience had been made.  There is currently no announced timeline in regard to project construction or opening.

Project Description:  The project would encompass the redevelopment of a large portion of Hollywood Land that is designated with “Hollywood Studios” archways.  This area includes: the “Mickey’s Philharmagic” show, Stage 17 building (Super Store), Monsters Inc.: Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! attraction, Stage 12 (former Hollywood & Dine), as well as the Hollywood Backlot Stage.  Various rumored proposals for the space have been made over the years, including a Monsters Inc.-themed Monstropolis area, an extension of the Marvel-themed Avengers Campus, and more.  With Bob Iger’s 2023 announcement of AVATAR coming to the Disneyland Resort, rumors and official-then-not-official announcements have been made indicating the AVATAR experience will be added to Disney California Adventure, likely taking over what is currently Hollywood Land.   A March 7, 2023 D23 article includes a quote from an Avatar movie cast member that describes the project as an “expansion,” which D23 did not correct or change.  Still, there are no details yet on what the upcoming “experience” will include.

DISNEYLAND RESORT HOTELS PROJECTS

Disneyland Project Tracker, UPDATED! Disneyland Resort Project & Rumor Tracker

Pixar Place Hotel  |  Paradise Pier Hotel

Project Status:  In progress, under construction.

Opening Date:  Officially opens January 30, 2024.

Project Timeline:  Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock met with community leaders in late April 2022 and announced several projects including a Pixar-themed overhaul for the Paradise Pier Hotel.   Disney announced at the D23 Expo 2022 that the hotel would be named the “Pixar Place Hotel.”

On May 25, 2023, Disney released additional concept art and some opening timelines for the phased-reimagining of the hotel:

        •  “Finding Nemo”-themed water play area will open “later this summer.”
        • Great Maple flagship restaurant will open “this fall.”
        • New Family Play Court with games inspired by Pixar shorts will open “later this year” in 2023.
        • Newly-renovated and re-themed lobby will be unveiled “this winter.”

On October 23, 2023, Disney announced new opening timelines for more areas of the hotel, including a January 30, 2023 opening for the entire hotel.

        • Great Maple flagship restaurant opened November 2023.
        • Sketch Pad Cafe in the lobby and the Small Bytes pool bar were announced to open “a few weeks after” the opening of Great Maple.

Project Description:  The new Pixar theme for the hotel will focus on the Pixar creative process and the artistry of Pixar.  The rethemed hotel will showcase curated artwork and feature “décor that reveals the creative journey of the artists who helped bring these stories to life.”  The Hotel will also feature “whimsical character moments,” such as the Pixar Lamp balancing atop its ball in the lobby.  The project will be built to be easily updated with new Pixar characters and artwork in the future. All food and beverage service for the hotel will be operated by Great Maple, a local third-party restaurant company.  Great Maple will operate a branded, flagship location on the ground floor of the hotel.

DOWNTOWN DISNEY & BEYOND PROJECTS

Disneyland Project Tracker, UPDATED! Disneyland Resort Project & Rumor Tracker

Downtown Disney Re-Imagining and Expansion

Project Status:  In progress.

Expected Opening Date:  Various dates.

Project Timeline:  Closures in Downtown Disney’s west side initially got underway in 2018 when Disney planned to build a major new luxury hotel on much of the space occupied by the west end of the shopping district.  That hotel was eventually canceled following disputes between Disney and the City of Anaheim over tax breaks related to the hotel’s construction.  The shuttered venues, including AMC Theater, Rainforest Cafe, and ESPN Zone remained in limbo for some time.  The closed Earl of Sandwich and Starbucks locations temporarily reopened after the hotel project was canceled.  A portion of Rainforest Cafe reopened as the Star Wars Trading Post in February 2021.  ESPN Zone has been used for pop-up events, exhibits, merchandise events, and other various offerings.  Demolition of the AMC Theater got underway in February 2022.  New vertical construction on the cleared expansion site has yet to begin.  In January 2023, MiceChat revealed plans for an expansion of Disney Home and a relocation of the Wonderground Gallery. Both locations are expected to close on January 9th for their transformations.  A new outdoor stage and lawn opened November 10, 2023 as part of the Downtown Disney expansion project.  The stage features a “soaring sculptural tower” by contemporary artist Nikkolas Smith.  Downtown Disney will continue its evolution in 2024 with the opening of new dining locations as well as the start of construction on new additions.

Project Description:  Major changes continue to transform the entirety of the Downtown Disney District.  These changes include shop expansions, relocations, new dining offerings, and a major expansion of the shopping district’s west side.  The reimagined west end of Downtown Disney will be designed in the Southern California mid-century modern style and features new shopping, dining, a lawn, and a new performance stage.  Popular offerings including a return of Earl of Sandwich, the addition of Din Tai Fung, and more will be part of the reimagined complex.

Downtown Disney projects

        • Earl of Sandwich (moving to pop-up location winter 2024):  Earl of Sandwich returned in February 2023 in the former La Brea Bakery location. A new sit-down “Earl of Sandwich Tavern” version of the restaurant also opened in the same location, with a new menu featuring salads, sandwiches, prime rib, and more at higher price points.   Earl of Sandwich will move to a temporary pop-up location near the Star Wars Trading Post by the end of February 2024.  On January 22, 2024 Disney confirmed an “all-new, two-story” location featuring “a quick-service Earl of Sandwich shop on the ground level and a table-service gastropub upstairs” was in the works for Downtown Disney.  Disney did not specify a location.
        • Paseo, Centrico, and Tiendita:  The long-standing Catal and Uva Bar dining locations closed mid-April 2023. Paseo, Centrico, and Tiendita are under construction as replacements and will serve contemporary Mexican cuisine and drinks by Michelin-starred Chef Carlos Gaytan.  Paseo will be an upscale table service location, Centrico will serve drinks and food in a casual outdoor bar and lounge area, and Tiendita will be a quick service walk-up location next to Paseo.
        • Din Tai Fung (new construction):  Family-owned renowned restaurant chain serving hand-crafted soup dumplings, noodles, and Chinese cuisine.  The restaurant will be all-new and part of the west side expansion.
        • Parkside Market (new construction): A new indoor food court featuring a “curated collection of diverse culinary concepts” by Levy will debut as part of the Downtown Disney expansion.  The Parkside Market will feature four offerings at opening including: Seoul Sister (Korean menu inspirited by bibimbap), Sip & Sonder (signature lattes, fresh treats, and Caribbean-inspired bites), GG’s Chicken Shop (chicken sandwiches and salads by James Beard Award-Winning restaurateurs), and a new second-story bar featuring craft cocktails and mocktails.
        • Porto’s Bakery (new construction):  Porto’s is a Southern California chain of bakery-cafes serving Cuban-American pastries and cuisine.  The existing La Brea Bakery cafe will be demolished and an all-new facility for Porto’s will be constructed near the esplanade.
        • Tortilla Jo’s (replacement): The long-running Tortilla Jo’s restaurant will close March 31.  Disney has not yet announced what will replace the Downtown Disney staple but it is expected that the existing building will be demolished and a new facility will be built in its place.
        • Sprinkles (replacement):  The popular cupcake shop closed mid-April 2023.  Disney announced in January 2024, that an extension of Paseo will open in the space formerly occupied by Sprinkles.  Tiendita will offer quick service Mexican food and be a part of the larger Paseo and Centrico project.

DisneylandForward & Third Theme Park

Project Status:  In early development.

Expected Opening Date:  Unknown.  If approved, projects coming from the DisneylandForward proposal would be completed in phases.

Project Timeline:  Disney announced DisneylandForward in March 2022.

Project Description:  DisneylandForward is a large-scale proposal by Disney to re-imagine the Disneyland Resort’s property zoning for future theme park, hotel, dining, and shopping experiences as well as a major parking structure. As available expansion space becomes increasingly limited, Disney is hoping to work with the City of Anaheim to rewrite the way the Resort property is zoned.  This would allow the company to more freely utilize their property and maximize its potential.  The project, if approved, is rumored to be realized in the following three phases:

        • Resort Parking and Transportation:  A new parking garage on the Pumbaa parking lot and several old office buildings and hotels East of the resort.  A pedestrian bridge over Harbor Blvd., which was previously blocked by Anaheim but now back in the mix, would connect the new transportation hub to the existing Disneyland Resort theme parks, Downtown Disney, and hotels.
        • Toy Story Parking Lot redevelopment:  A new multi-use shopping, dining, entertainment, and hotel complex targeted toward convention visitors would be built where the existing Toy Story parking lot is currently located.
        • Third Theme Park: Although the initial description simply mentioned attraction expansions for the Disneyland Resort theme parks, Disney has told local residents it is working with local community groups, businesses, and the city on a framework for building a 3rd theme park on the land that runs on the far west end of the resort, surrounding the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel. Unlike the previously canceled hotel and parking structure projects, Disney is spending a significant amount of time and money to build community support for this project.

Disney showcased projects such as Shanghai Disneyland’s upcoming Zootopia land and Tokyo DisneySea’s upcoming Fantasy Springs attractions as possibilities for expansion under the DisneylandForward project banner.  These attractions as well as entirely new concepts could be built if Disney is given permission to more freely utilize their property.  (Early concept examples are just initial ideas to explain the project and actual attractions and land concepts could be entirely different in the final project)
