Sad Walt Disney World entertainment news today as the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show has permanently closed. The luau dinner show is a big part of Walt Disney World history, entertaining guests since the Polynesian’s opening in 1971, before going dark due to the resort-wide closure in March of 2020.

We had hoped the show would return until today’s announcement of the permanent closure.

And before you get your hopes up that the luau might return in the future, the next little bit of news will explain why it isn’t likely…
Out With the Old, In With the DVC
Disney Vacation Club is expanding at the Polynesian. The land that the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show occupied at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort will eventually house a new DVC Villa building. The proposed vacation ownership property will evoke the spirit of the Pacific Islands, but has a very different look than the rest of the Polynesian Resort.

Projected to open in late 2024, Disney claims the new building’s rendering is inspired by the early concepts for Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, which showed a tower on the property:

Situated on the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon, the proposed property would offer stunning views of the Magic Kingdom. Along with the additional rooms, new recreation offerings, and dining options will be added. More information and project details will be shared at a later date.
Disney also stated they will honor the Spirit of Aloha dinner show through this new property:
“Since the resort opened in 1971, the rich entertainment this show has represented over the years includes the beautiful sights, incredible sounds and delicious tastes of Polynesia. While we can’t share all the details about the expansion yet, we will honor this show as part of the new addition.”
