In the summer of 1976, I was 11 years old and I remember my neighbors talking about this super cool movie that was coming out the following year. They were really excited about it so I made a point to really remember the name of it… Star Wars (the “Episode IV: A New Hope” was added later).
When Star Wars was released in 1977 I watched the film several times at my local theater (it only had one screen! Can you imagine something like that today?) and I could never get enough of it. Looking back at the start of the Star Wars pop culture phenomenon, I’m so happy that I was there at the beginning of it and was able to grow up with the galaxy far, far away.
Getting to experience Star Wars in my youth is such a fun childhood memory. I was able to live through a new era of pop culture. And that love of Star Wars didn’t end with me— it was something that I was able to pass on to my kids! In 2019, my son graduated from CSUN with a Star Wars-themed cap and gown, and my daughter had her high school senior pictures taken at Disneyland with her favorite R2-D2 popcorn bucket.
As a family of Star Wars fans, we all love to celebrate May the 4th. I usually host a movie night for our family and friends. I make Star Wars-themed desserts and drinks with matching table decor. And of course, passing out lightsabers to Jedi-in-training!
This year, I’m adding a few new options to my May the 4th feast. First is my take on Rontro Wraps from Ronto Roasters in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Secondly, I’m making Millennium Falcon Star Wars Soft Serve Sundaes similar to the ones at The Pineapple Lanai at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort at Walt Disney World. If these sound too difficult, there’s nothing to worry about! I’ll walk you through every step.
Copycat Ronto Wrap Recipe
As you’re walking through the Marketplace at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you’ll find Ronto Roasters, with a spit of meat being roasted over a podracer engine. The speciality of Ronto Roasters is a Ronto Wrap, which is a Mediterranean-inspired pork and sausage wrap with cole slaw and a peppery dressing.
Although I don’t have the means to recreate that exact set-up, I feel pretty confident that my copycat Ronto Wrap will transport you back to Batuu.
Ronto Wrap Ingredients:
- Any spicy sausage – I used Jacksonville Andouille sausage but Disney uses a Brazilian sausage if you can find it
- Thinly cut pork chops
- Coleslaw – I just used the pre-packaged bag and added my own dressing
- Peppercorn dressing (recipe included but you could use store-bought)
- Pita bread
Directions for the Ronto Wrap:
- Pound the pork chops down so they are between 1/4″ – 1/8″ thick.
- Pan fry or grill the sausages. Once cooked, set aside.
- Sprinkle the pork chops with salt and pepper and using the same pan, fry/grill the pork chops until cooked through (165ºF). Remember, it’s not going to take long since they are so thin.
- Warm up the pita bread – this can be done on the stove in a pan, in the microwave for 20 seconds (wrapped in a damp paper towel) or on the grill.
- Take a warm pita shell, spread it with the peppercorn dressing and add one pork chop and one sausage then top with the coleslaw.
Peppercorn dressing recipe:
- 1/2 cup of mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1/4 cup of sour cream
- 2 Tablespoons of crushed peppercorn
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
- salt to taste
Mix all ingredients in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and put in the refrigerator until ready to use. Let chill for at least an hour to let all of the flavors come together.
Coleslaw red vinegar and oil dressing recipe
- 1/8 cup red wine vinegar
- 1/2 Tablespoon sugar
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
- 8 oz coleslaw mix
- salt and pepper to taste
Mix red wine vinegar, sugar and oil in a bowl then add in the coleslaw mix. Gently toss together. If you like it crunchy, use the coleslaw immediately but you can let it sit for about 15-20 minutes so it gets a little softer and the flavors seep into the slaw.
To assemble:
You can cut the sausages in half lengthwise as well as the pork chops so it is easier to eat. A little peppercorn sauce goes a long way. You can also make mini versions for hors d’œuvres like I am for my party by cutting up flatbread into strips and the meat into bite-sized pieces.
Copycat Millennium Falcon Soft Serve Sundae
For this next recipe, we’re hopping over to Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Village Resort for a copycat of the Millennium Falcon Soft Serve Sundae sold at the Pineapple Lanai. It is quite easy to make your own soft serve ice cream with only 4 ingredients. And the best part is you don’t even need an ice cream maker!
Millennium Falcon Soft Serve Sundae Ingredients:
- 3 c. Heavy Cream
- 2 c. sugar
- 2 t. vanilla
- ¾ t. salt
Instructions:
- Heat cream, sugar and salt in a saucepan on medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Keep stirring and don’t let the mixture boil. Remove from heat and add the vanilla. Using food coloring, make the mixture a medium gray color. I did this by mixing blue, green and purple food coloring on some parchment paper with a toothpick and a spoonful of the ice cream mixture until I was happy with the color and then added it to the mixture a stirred it in well. You can also use black and blue food coloring to make gray.
- Put the mixture in a freezer-proof container and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
- Pour mixture into a bowl and mix until soft peaks form. Do not overmix!
- Transfer mixture into a clean freezer container, cover the top of the mixture with parchment paper and freeze 10-12 hours.
- Using a piping bag with a large star tip, pipe the ice cream over brownie asteroid chunks with stardust sparkles. I just used brownie bites I bought at my local grocery store and tossed them in a bag with some edible glitter.
- Drizzle with crushed Oreos, chocolate sundae syrup and edible pearls. I made my chocolate Millenium Falcon from a chocolate mold to top it off.
For the Millennium Falcon chocolate decoration, I melted some white chocolate candy melts and added food coloring to turn it a light gray. Then I poured the chocolate into a Millennium Falcon-shaped candy mold and let it set. After they had firmed up, I brushed the candies with edible shimmer powder.
