The Golden Globes were held on Sunday the 28th of February and Disney went home with an exciting award. Here’s how nominations and wins stacked up for a challenging awards season.
We originally ran this article on February 13th to let you know what was nominated, we updated after the Golden Globe Awards to fill in the winners for you.
“Soul” wins best animated feature at the 2021 Golden Globes!
Directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers, “Soul” landed on Disney+ Christmas Day, and made history as the first Pixar film with a Black lead character.

“Being able to tell a universal tale that explored the meaning of life through the prism of a Black man’s experiences was a special honor,” co-director Powers said in an acceptance speech during the 78th annual Golden Globes.
“Soul,” which also won best original score, came out on top over “The Croods: A New Age,” “Over the Moon,” “Wolfwalkers,” and Disney/Pixar’s other entry, “Onward.”
Other winners from across Disney’s business units include “Nomadland” for best motion picture (drama) and best director Chloé Zhao, with Andra Dau winning best performance by an actress in a motion picture for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”

Golden Globe Nominations
Nominations for the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards were recently announced and Disney took home a lion’s share of them. Nods were received for “The Mandalorian,” Soul,” and “Hamilton,” among others. In fact, Disney+ landed its first Golden Globe nominations for original content from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
“The Mandalorian,” which has become a ratings darling for Disney+, has become a big player to Disney in the streaming wars. It broke into the top ten for most-watched shows on a streaming platform (bested only by Netflix), and was previously nominated for 15 Emmy Awards for its freshman season, of which it won seven.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler return as hosts and would like to remind you that stakes have never been lower . . . in fact, if they play their cards right . . . this might be the last award show ever. (Or so said their commercial which played non-stop on NBC for weeks).
Musical Chairs Air Dates
This year has seen movie theaters around the world shutter their doors, which has prompted studios to continuously reschedule release dates of their movies or schedule them onto streaming platforms, and film festivals cancel or reimagine their events for online consumption. The shift in the schedule has prompting awards bodies to postpone their respective telecasts and adjust eligibility rules to account for continued uncertainty, which will give a different look to the 2021 awards season.
In any other year, The Golden Globes would have taken place in January. However, due to awards season’s rescheduling of events, and with the Annies and Oscars currently set for April, the celebration was pushed to Sunday, Feb. 28 on NBC.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards, affectionately called The SAG Awards by industry insiders, were moved from its original date to March, but because of scheduling conflicts with the Grammy Awards, it was rescheduled again to Sunday, Apr. 4. The ceremony will be broadcast live on both TNT and TBS 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST.
