The Walt Disney Company announced today that Pixar’s upcoming animated film “Soul” will be skipping its November 20 theatrical release and will debut exclusively on Disney+ with no upcharge to subscribers. The animated family film will launch on the streaming service Dec. 25. In international markets, where Disney+ isn’t available, “Soul” will be released in theaters later in the year (with dates to be determined).
Since April, marketplace conditions have challenged Hollywood’s distribution model for releasing films; however, it also provided an opportunity for platforms like Disney+ to beef up its library with more original content.

Disney+ surged past 60 million subscribers within the first year of its launch, which put the streaming service four years ahead of schedule, exceeding the Walt Disney Company’s expectations. With the majority of subscribers still homebound and searching for new content, debuting “Soul” on the streamer should be a good fit.
“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving ‘Soul’ with audiences direct to Disney+ in December,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”
Other films that were earmarked to be released in 2020, like “Dune” from Warner Bros. Pictures and the upcoming James Bond sequel “No Time to Die,” have been rescheduled to debut in 2021.
This past April, Micechat reported that Disney was rescheduling the theatrical release of “Soul” from June 19 to November 20 due to theaters being shuttered. That date was within a week of when Disney Animation’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” was scheduled to open. Due to the shuffling, “Raya and the Last Dragon” has been moved to March 12, 2021, but that date may again change based on what the circumstances are in 2021.
About Soul
Featuring the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Angela Bassett, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, and Daveed Diggs, “Soul” is directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter (“Inside Out,” “Up”), co-directed by Kemp Powers (“One Night in Miami”) and produced by Academy Award nominee Dana Murray (Pixar short “Lou”). Globally renowned musician Jon Batiste will be writing original jazz music for the film, and Oscar-winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (“The Social Network”), from Nine Inch Nails, will compose an original score that will drift between the real and soul worlds.
