Disney has announced it is rescheduling the theatrical release of Pixar’s animated feature Soul from June 19 to November 20. The date is within a week of where Disney’s animated feature Raya and the Last Dragon was scheduled to open. Due to the shuffling, Raya and the Last Dragon has been moved to March 12, 2021.

Historically, Disney has thrived on releasing animated features during the pre-Thanksgiving period, launching titles like Coco, Moana and Frozen 2 to great success. Opening Soul the Friday before the Thanksgiving holiday will put it in the marketplace for a week leading up to the 4-day holiday weekend, which could position it to play well for that period. However, Soul won’t be the only tentpole film scheduled to open that day.

Studios Setting New Release Dates for Tentpole Films
Analysts and theater owners are predicting that cinemas will be reopened by mid-June. Due to the pandemic, studios are playing it conservatively and rescheduling release dates of their tentpole films later in the year.
Other motion pictures currently scheduled to open the same weekend as Soul are Warner Bros./Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong, Sony’s Kevin Hart comedy The Man From Toronto, and an untitled Amblin feature from Universal. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving includes MGM’s No Time to Die, a Will Smith tennis drama from Warner Bros., and the Kristen Stewart comedy The Happiest Season from Sony.
