Fans of the Star Wars saga will have something to cheer about on Star Wars day. The final chapter of the Skywalker saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will join Disney’s extensive collection of Star Wars films and will begin streaming two months early on Disney+.
The Rise of Skywalker Lands on Disney+ May 4th, 2020
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will join Disney+’s May the 4th line-up including the premiere of the 8-episode docuseries Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, and the highly anticipated finale of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
For those not indoctrinated, Star Wars Day started as an online celebration by fans to celebrate Star Wars. Appropriately, May 4 was chosen for the pun on the phrase “May the Force be with you” as “May the Fourth be with you.” The date was never officially declared by Lucasfilm or The Walt Disney Company, but the companies have embraced it as the franchise’s annual celebration.

Disney+ Strategizing In Difficult Times
Releasing titles ahead of schedule – like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – is the latest example of how Disney is responding to the world health crisis. As an example, Frozen 2 hit the platform three months earlier than scheduled, and Pixar’s Onward arrived April 3, less than a month after its theatrical release.
The only film from the Star Wars universe not available for streaming on Disney+ is Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Han Solo prequel will be available in the U.S. on July 9, 2020. It is currently available for viewing in the U.S. on Netflix.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, with Ian McDiarmid and Billy Dee Williams
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Abrams and Michelle Rejwan. Callum Greene, Tommy Gormley and Jason McGatlin serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Chris Terrio & J.J. Abrams and the story is by Derek Connolly & Colin Trevorrow and J.J. Abrams & Chris Terrio, based on characters created by George Lucas.
