Prepare for an epic adventure with Raya, Disney’s next heroine of Asian descent, on her quest to find the last dragon in the mysterious land of Kumandra.
About Raya and the Last Dragon
At last year’s D23 Expo, Walt Disney Animation Studios announced the next film in their animation pipeline, Raya and the Last Dragon. This original animated feature will be the directorial debut of Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, and co-directed by John Ripa, with a screenplay by Adele Lim and starring Cassie Steele as Raya and Awkwafina as Sisu, a water dragon.
Lim, a Malaysian film and television producer/screenwriter best known for co-writing the 2018 movie Crazy Rich Asians, took to the stage with Moana producer Osnat Shurer and the film’s actors to give an exclusive preview of the film.
An Adventure in Another Time and Place
The movie takes place in the fictional Kumandra, “a reimagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization that venerated mythical dragons for their power and their wisdom,” Shurer said. “It’s inspired by Southeast Asia, both in its themes of community and hope, and in its design.”
Raya, a lone warrior determined to save her world, goes on a mission to find the last dragon who she believes has the power to save the kingdom of Kumandra, also known as the Land of the Dragon. Dragons have been long gone from the kingdom and Kumandra has since been invaded by a “dark, sinister force.”
Beyond what was revealed at the presentation, little is known about the film. Early footage and development art that was displayed at D23 has yet to make its way online. Also, a trailer for the film hasn’t been released by Disney. Based on the company’s excellent track record of marketing their animated films, history would predict it’s likely one will premiere later this year with much fanfare.
Delayed Theatrical Release Date
MiceChat recently reported that due to theaters being shuttered over concerns about the global health crisis Disney rescheduled the theatrical release of Pixar’s animated feature Soul from June 19 to November 20. The date is within a week of where Raya and the Last Dragon was originally scheduled to open. Due to the shuffling, Raya and the Last Dragon has been moved to March 12, 2021.
