It comes as no surprise that language regarding the opening of the Marvel-themed Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure has been changed from July 18th to “Coming Soon” on the Disneyland website.
All work on Avengers Campus, and all other construction projects at the Disneyland Resort, have been suspended due to direction from health and government officials. As a result, all projects are delayed, including the highly anticipated Avengers Campus.
The project team is looking forward to resuming work as soon as it is safe to do so and will communicate a new opening date once they have definitive information. The good news here is that the project is still “Coming Soon.”
It was just March 11th that Disney announced the opening date for Avengers Campus, which shows just how rapidly the current world health situation unraveled. Disneyland was clearly still planning to remain open at that time or they wouldn’t have announced an opening date for the new land. Here’s our coverage of the opening date announcement and PYM Test Kitchen food:
Avengers Campus Status
MiceChat documented Marvel Land construction progress in the weeks leading up to the final day of park operation. You can see that the Spider-Man attraction (silver and red towers at the front of the land near the parade route) is much further along than the shops and restaurant at the back of the land (near Guardians of the Galaxy).
The Spider-Man building is nearly complete. That’s Spidey you see swinging above the land. A new type of stunt animatronic will be used to slingshot the webslinger above the land.
The surface treatment of the Spider-Man ride building were nearly finished. Brick, metal, and shiny red paneling.
The attraction will be a state-of-the-art family dark ride that uses motion capture technology to allow guests to sling webs to capture spider-bots.
However, work on the Avengers shop (and future portal to a phase-2 Avengers ride) at the back of the land was still lagging behind.
The PYM Test Kitchen, which will serve up crazy looking food, was similarly further behind the Spider-Man attraction progress.
In the concept image below (looking toward the land from the Guardians of the Galaxy ride) shows Avengers ride on the left and PYM Test Kitchen on the right (that’s a dining patio you see with the red tree).
The interior concept art shows a typical quick serve setup (not unlike Flo’s in Cars Land).
Harder to see the progress on the Dr. Strange show area across from Spider-Man. . .
Phase 2 Avengers Ride
There’s no word yet on what the closures and economic impact on the travel industry and larger economy will have on the Avengers Campus expansion plans. An Avengers themed attraction was announced for a future expansion by Bob Chapek at the D23 Expo (in August of 2019). The unnamed ride would have guests piloting a Quinjet on an adventure mission to Wakanda.
Past economic downturns have resulted in Disney delaying or canceling attractions, even ones well along in the planning process. Let’s hope travel to Disneyland recovers quickly so this expansion stays on track.
