Our spidey senses are telling us a new attraction is coming soon! Or maybe it’s just all those construction walls…
We’ve got some new information on the Spider-Man attraction currently underway for the all new Avengers Campus coming to Disney California Adventure! And this is wild stuff . . .
Guests visiting Disney California Adventure in the near future may be able to catch a glimpse of Spider-Man swinging above the rooftops of Avengers Campus. Check out the video below of an acrobatic animatronic version of Spidey himself!
Wow!! This type of animatronic, also known as a struntronic, was created by Disney Imagineering. Here’s some footage of earlier concepts – the fluid movements and full-body acrobatics are a perfect fit for Spider-Man. Yes, it looks like a technical nightmare for Disney’s operations staff, but it’s amazing gee-whiz sort of stuff for us fans.
This summer, phase 1 of the new Marvel-themed land, Avengers Campus, opens! This phase includes the opening of Disney’s first-ever attraction to feature the iconic Spider-Man, along with an Ant-Man themed eatery and Marvel character meet & greet experiences. The areas within Avengers Campus are each considered as a key address, or campus, bringing the individual Avengers together, forming the next generation of superheroes.
The first key address of the Avengers Campus will be the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, or “WEB”, home to the Spider-Man attraction. The official attraction backstory fills in the premise: “During an open house at WEB, the aspiring inventors are excited to invite you for a test drive of their latest invention: the “Web Slinger” vehicle, which allows you to sling webs just like Spider-Man! The attraction gives you a taste of what it’s like to have actual super powers as you help Spider-Man collect Spider-Bots that have run amok.”
Note that guests don’t appear to be holding blasters (in the concept art above) as they would in other Disney shooter attractions. Instead, it looks like the visuals of the webs you sling will be computer-generated in real time from your actual wrist position.
Blueprints for Disneyland Paris’ Spider-Man attraction were recently leaked, it’s very likely DCA’s attraction will follow these same plans:

According to OutsideEARS, there will be two pre-show areas before guests wear their 3D glasses and set off on their Spidey adventure. Disney’s concept art below features Spider-Man in one of the pre-show sets.
The ride vehicles are known as “Web Slingers”, which allow you to shoot webs throughout your adventure, just like Spider-Man! The Web Slingers are pod-like vehicles which appear to seat 3-4 guests on either side, while gliding, twisting and turning along a track, similar to Toy Story Midway Mania. From what we’ve seen, the vehicle seems to ride along a ground-level track. There’s much speculation if there will be any ride portions where the vehicle seems to hang from above, a la Peter Pan’s Flight, as guests could truly feel what it’s like to swing and sway just like the Wall-Crawler.
Disney boasts there will be a “brand-new, cutting edge interface as part of the fun, interactive attraction. With never-before-seen technology and practical effects, guests will get to experience for themselves what it’s like to have the abilities of a Super Hero.” We’ve yet to see or hear what this exactly could be, or just how guests will be able to sling webs… but today’s video release of that acrobatic animatronic Spidey has us even more excited!
Based on the recent epic innovation that is Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, we’re confident in saying Walt Disney Imagineering just might blow our minds… we sincerely hope they do!
