It’s time to add a little dose of magic into your week! Today, we’re looking at some construction, refurbishments and additions around Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. It’s a beautiful day and there’s a lot to cover, so let’s get started!
Heading onto Main Street… City Hall is still covered up in refurbishment scrims.
Even with the heavy crowds, this is still a pretty dreamy sight:
Cinderella Castle Before the Changes
With the recent news of Cinderella Castle receiving a golden makeover, we wanted to grab a few before shots! Construction hasn’t started quite yet, but it will very soon!
Have you heard about the upcoming Castle makeover? Will it affect your trip? Check out our piece covering the news below.
A Retro Tomorrowland Returns in 3… 2… 1…
Blast off! A new, yet classic Tomorrowland aesthetic is really starting to peek through…
You can see some of the new support beams and columns lining the Peoplemover track in the photo below. These look a lot like how they used to… a classic Tomorrowland is slowly returning!
Some columns are waiting to be painted white…
While others are waiting for their cement makeover:
Here’s a look back to Tomorrowland’s original 60’s Googie architecture style, before all of the space-steampunk aesthetic arrived in 1994.
It looks like we’ll be seeing more of this retro style being unveiled over the next year, ultimately finishing in time for the park’s 50th anniversary and TRON attraction opening!
Speaking of TRON, the roller coaster’s construction site can be seen from many different parts of the park:
Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin continues to bring the crowds; a long, extended queue often snakes around outside switchbacks. I don’t ever remember lines like this in the days before FastPass came to everything. Do you?
Working into the Tomorrowland refresh, Mickey was removed from the Star Traders gift shop name and logo… but we’re loving this retro style:
With all of the changes happening with Tomorrowland’s retro-update, it’s good to see Space Mountain’s classic silhouette in the skyline.
Fantasyland Views
More views of TRON construction can be seen here – the show building is HUGE and hard to miss from Storybook Circus:
They’ve added some blue, white and grey panels to the building. I wonder if they’ll keep those varying colors or paint it all one shade like the Guardians coaster show building? But it would be great if they could find a way to obscure the building more from the Storybook Circus side of the attraction.
View from the walkway next to Barnstormer:
Prince Eric’s castle is looking good…
“Maurice’s Amazing Popping Machine” popcorn cart used to stand here, but it’s now a new queue space for Gaston’s Meet & Greet.
Construction continues at the It’s a Small World queue. It looks shuttered with all of the construction walls, but the attraction is still open!
Bits & Bites
The moat surrounding Cinderella Castle has been partially drained. This is most likely in preparation for the construction crews to start work on the golden makeover soon.
These new Mary Blair-inspired popcorn boxes are a great improvement from the previous design. The little things really do make a difference.
I spy a Disney Cruise Line ship in there too. I wonder if we’ll be seeing this design outside WDW and on the Disney ships…
Checking in on Liberty Square
One of the best views in the Kingdom…
Frontierland & Adventureland Updates
Splash Mountain is still down for its annual refurbishment that began in early January. You can visit your Laughin’ Place again when it reopens February 28th.
Since Splash is closed, Thunder Mountain draws even more guests over to the far end of Frontierland…
Leaving the Frontier, let’s set sail for Adventure!
The Pirates League is closing up shop on July 27th, 2020. If you’d like to become a Pirate or Mermaid one last time, reserve your makeover before then! There’s been no word on what will replace this space, or if said makeovers will make their way into Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.
There aren’t any current changes going on in Adventureland, but with 4(!!) Dumbo-style spinner rides, including Aladdin’s Flying Carpets, we’d love to trade this ride for something more exciting. It’s time for Imagineering to dust off those plans for Adventureland E-Tickets.
Circling Back to Main Street, U.S.A.
Magic Kingdom really brings in the crowds. Yet, daily park hours are among the shortest with the average operating hours being 9AM-9PM.
The golden hour will soon take on a whole new meaning at Cinderella Castle…
That’s a wrap on our Magic Kingdom day!
