This summer, Magic Kingdom’s iconic castle is getting a makeover.
Disney announced that Cinderella Castle is receiving a royal transformation in honor of this year’s 70th anniversary celebration of the animated classic Cinderella. Vibrant and shimmering enhancements inspired by the classic fairy tale can be seen in the concept image below:

Cinderella Castle appears to be even more regal and beautiful than before, complete with bluer blues and all of those new golden details. The contrasting base adds even more dimension, similar to the sister-castle found in Tokyo Disneyland.
Disneyland fans will note that many of the same techniques added to Disneyland’s castle last year will be employed here as well. Colors appear darker at the bottom and become lighter toward the top. It’s a forced perspective technique that adds the appearance of extra height.
Disney has stated this will be a permanent change. The work starts over the coming weeks and will be finished this summer; while the castle shows Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire and Happily Ever After will continue as normal.
Speaking of Happily Ever After, those new golden touches remind me of one of the closing projection sequences seen in the nighttime spectacular… the golden outlines are pretty close to the new castle’s concept.
Compared to past castle makeovers… this new look is much more becoming for Magic Kingdom’s icon AND the resort’s upcoming 50th “Golden” anniversary.
Love it or hate it, the pepto-pink cake castle proudly celebrated the resort’s 25th anniversary in 1996! Most hated it, but it was a bold birthday tribute.

Remember when the castle was TP’d and graffitied in “honor” of Stitch’s arrival in Tomorrowland? That’s right, toilet paper… on Cinderella Castle. It was so hated that it lasted just one day in 2004, thank goodness.

And don’t forget about the Window of Magic, along with plenty of swirly golden touches, added for 2005’s Happiest Celebration on Earth.

…To my eye, this new gilded makeover is an appropriately elegant fit for the park’s upcoming 50th birthday. But, will there eventually be more to this renovation than just saturated paint colors and golden accents?
It is interesting that Disney attributes this castle makeover to the film’s 70th anniversary, not the resort’s golden anniversary taking place next year… Could something more be in the works for the castle prior to October 1st, 2021?
