Completing Epcot’s trifecta of new pavilion films, Awesome Planet began showing for guests this weekend (Friday, January 17th). This movie wasn’t quite ready at our media preview earlier this week for France’s Beauty & the Beast Sing-Along and Canada: Far and Wide, but we finally experienced it this weekend!
And let me say, Awesome Planet is totally… awesome! And I’m not just saying that to be corny. Let’s take a look, and see if you agree.
About Awesome Planet
Awesome Planet is located inside The Land Pavilion in Future World. This pavilion is also home to the attractions Living with the Land and Soarin’ Around the World.
Awesome Planet showcases Earth’s spectacular beauty, diversity and dynamic story. The film opens with breathtaking space sequences, created by Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic, then transitions into real-life scenes around the world. You’ll see fantastic views of lush rainforests, icy tundras, deserts, oceans and more.
There are several upgraded theater effects, further immersing you with each scene, like lighting, wind, mist, and scents of pine and campfire. (Tip: You may not experience the best of these effects by sitting in the first few rows)
The film lasts 10 minutes and is narrated by Ty Burrell —who you’ll recognize from his role as Real Estate Agent Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. His role in Awesome Planet is to upsell our beautiful planet’s biomes, share its history, address the downfalls of a neglected environment and show how we can combat these issues.
To round out this film, Acadamy Award-winning composer Steven Price created an all-new score for Awesome Planet. If that name sounds familiar, it may be because of his stunning work on the space film, Gravity.
My Thoughts on Awesome Planet
I’d consider this a major upgrade to the theater’s predecessor, The Circle of Life. Awesome Planet is beautifully composed, and Ty Burrell’s comedic real estate bit is delightful. This film delivers on an eyes-and-ears-candy level, as well as appropriately delivering an important environmental message. There’s a feeling of Epcot’s original idea of “edutainment” here – offering a nice, fresh boost to the Land Pavilion.
Awesome Planet is definitely worth viewing. For some, this may be a film you can return to time and time again. And even if you can’t see yourself specifically making plans to visit this movie, it makes for a nice respite while waiting for that Soarin’ FastPass! Either way, you’ll get to watch a fun little film about our planet.
