Everything old is new again, judging by Disneyland’s latest retro merchandise that is. We saw a bit of it in our last Merchandise Update and Disneyland has plenty of other items that pay homage to bygone times.
Let’s power up MiceChat’s time machine and give the new old items a look!
Kids of the 80s and 90s, Rejoice!
We are starting off our tour with a piece of merchandise that I am particularly excited about, the VHS journal. I spotted ones for Toy Story, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Lilo and Stitch, and The Emperor’s New Groove. These journals are about as thick as a VHS case and have a plastic cover with art found on the original VHS boxes.
Flip open the cover of one of these beauties and you will notice two things. The first is a picture of a video cassette on the front page. The second is art from the corresponding film in the corners of the journal’s pages.
Disney Afternoon TV block viewers will appreciate these shirts from Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Duck Tales not only has a shirt but also a Loungefly backpack made in Scrooge McDuck’s likeness and socks with his grandnephews.
Fans of 90s-era Mickey Mouse Club will appreciate this long sleeve shirt.
We already saw some Mousercise stuff a while back but these slipped under my radar. I also got serious old-school Tomorrowland vibes from this windbreaker.
This ensemble would make a great exercise outfit, don’t you think?
The Island of Lost Toys
The greatest concentration of Disneyland’s retro merchandise is at the Collector’s Warehouse in Disney California Adventure. It makes sense given Starlord’s backstory and is a nice tie-in on Disney’s part.
Here’s a breakdown of the retro toys and games there.
Park attractions count as toys, too, right? Pay your respects to the extinct treasures, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage (from Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom) and the Skyway (Disneyland and Magic Kingdom), with some apparel. These were found at World of Disney in Downtown Disney.
They are Called “Classics” for a Reason
The Golden Age of Disney films gets some love here. I spotted these shirts have retro movie posters printed on the fabric. I like the concept but I do wish they were less gaudy.
And it doesn’t get more “classic” than Mickey Mouse from Plane Crazy and Steamboat Willie. This Mickey Through the Years Collection features a print of our pal Mickey and the various forms he has taken. This large canvas bag was one of the items in the collection.
The art can also be found on this coffee mug.
And for the toy lovers, there is this set of three die cast race cars. Each one is made to look like Mickey, if he were a car, at different points in his life. This set has Steamboat Willie, Sorcerer Mickey, and Classic Mickey.
I hope you enjoyed your trip back in time. Did anything stand out as a “must-have?” Do you have any memories from these franchises? Let us know in the comments!
