Orlando is home to its share of immersive attractions, but few attempt to tackle something quite as ambitious as the universe itself. Now open at The Florida Mall, Smithsonian Starstruck: An Immersive Experience invites guests to leave Earth behind and embark on a virtual journey through galaxies, stars, and some of the most fascinating corners of the cosmos.

I expected to spend a couple of hours at a virtual reality attraction inside The Florida Mall. I didn’t expect to leave thinking about my place in the universe. While the presentation is relatively simple, the combination of stunning visuals, educational storytelling, and interactive elements creates an experience that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Launching Into Space
Upon arrival, guests are fitted with a virtual reality headset and guided through a brief introduction before stepping into the experience. As someone who had never experienced VR before, I will admit there was a bit of an adjustment period. It took a few minutes to trust that I wasn’t about to walk into a wall or bump into another guest.
Fortunately, the experience is designed to make navigation easy, and before long, I found myself completely immersed in the journey.
Developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Starstruck uses real astronomical data to bring the universe to life. Throughout the approximately 40-minute experience, guests travel alongside some of humanity’s most powerful observatories, exploring everything from our solar system to distant galaxies and the mysterious forces that shape the cosmos.
More Science Center Than Thrill Ride
One of the things that stood out to me most was the overall tone of the experience. Rather than feeling like a video game or action-based attraction, Starstruck feels more like stepping into a museum exhibit or science center presentation.

That is not a criticism.
The experience focuses on discovery and exploration, allowing guests to learn about the universe while actively participating in the journey. Along the way, visitors encounter stars in various stages of their life cycles, distant planets orbiting other suns, and even the immense gravitational pull of a black hole.
The educational aspects never feel overwhelming, and the information is presented in a way that remains engaging for both science enthusiasts and casual visitors.
Interactive Moments Bring the Experience to Life
While the visuals are certainly the star of the show, some of my favorite moments came from the interactive elements scattered throughout the experience.

Guests have opportunities to interact with various objects and exhibits as they progress through the journey. I especially enjoyed being able to virtually pick up and examine the different telescopes that have helped humanity better understand the universe. It is a simple feature, but it creates a stronger connection between the technology and the discoveries being showcased.
The experience does an excellent job of balancing educational content with moments of wonder, allowing guests to appreciate both the science and the beauty of what they are seeing.

A New Perspective on Our Place in the Universe
The visuals throughout Starstruck are impressive. Massive galaxies stretch out in every direction, stars burn with incredible intensity, and the sheer scale of the universe becomes easier to grasp when you are surrounded by it.
Yet the most memorable part of the experience wasn’t any single visual effect.

It was the perspective.
As the journey unfolded, I found myself reflecting on just how small we are compared to the vastness of the universe. Looking out across billions of stars and countless galaxies has a way of putting everyday concerns into perspective.
It is a feeling that stays with you long after the headset comes off.
Worth a Visit?
At $20 per person, Smithsonian Starstruck offers a surprisingly affordable experience. These prices vary by date. You can also get a printed souvenir photo with a digital copy for $13.

This is not the type of attraction designed to deliver thrills or adrenaline. Instead, it offers something increasingly rare: an opportunity to slow down, learn something new, and experience a sense of wonder.
Whether you are passionate about astronomy as I am, curious about virtual reality, or simply looking for something different to do in Orlando, Starstruck is worth considering. The combination of education, technology, and breathtaking imagery makes for an enjoyable journey through the cosmos.
And if you’re anything like me, you may leave with a renewed appreciation for both the universe around us and our small place within it.
