Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress Spins Into a Controversial New Future

It was only a matter of time before progress caught up with Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress.

A Magic Kingdom favorite since 1975 (and a Disney attraction since the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair), the classic rotating theater will close on July 6, 2026, to make way for a substantially updated version set to debut in 2027. The refreshed show will introduce new decades, a new timeline, and even a new Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney himself.

But while the changes may give the aging attraction a new lease on life, they also mark the end of something far more significant.

For generations of Disney fans, Carousel of Progress wasn’t simply a show about technological advancement. It was one of the few remaining attractions shaped directly by Walt Disney himself and inspired by the world he grew up in. When the updated version opens, that connection to Walt’s own lifetime will largely disappear, replaced by a new story designed for modern audiences.

The last day to experience the current version of Carousel of Progress will be July 5, 2026.

Why Carousel of Progress Was So Personal to Walt Disney

Walt Disney was deeply involved in the development of Carousel of Progress, personally reviewing scenes, refining jokes, selecting appliances, and shaping the personalities of the show’s Audio-Animatronics family. He even insisted that Rover, the family dog, appear in every act because real families don’t leave the dog behind when life changes.

But Walt’s connection to the attraction went far beyond creative oversight.

In many ways, Carousel of Progress reflected his own life story.

Although the family portrayed in the show is fictional, the attraction’s original timeline closely paralleled the extraordinary technological changes Walt witnessed firsthand. Born in 1901, Walt grew up in a world of iceboxes, gas lamps, horse-drawn transportation, and hand-powered household chores. By the time he died in 1966, Americans were watching color television, flying on commercial jetliners, and preparing to send astronauts to the moon.

The show’s original progression from the turn of the century through the mid-20th century wasn’t arbitrary. It reflected the world Walt experienced and the optimism he felt about innovation’s ability to improve everyday life.

That perspective became the heart of the attraction. Carousel of Progress wasn’t simply a showcase of gadgets and inventions. It was a celebration of the dramatic changes one generation could experience within a single lifetime.

More than 30 years have passed since the attraction’s last major update in 1994, and Disney has decided it’s time for the carousel to move forward once again.

The new version retains the show’s central premise of following one family through changing times, but shifts the timeline forward by roughly six decades. Just as the original attraction looked back approximately 60 years from its 1964 World’s Fair debut, the new version begins about 60 years ago.

The updated Carousel of Progress envisions a future in which innovation is part of everyday life and reinforces the idea that “a beautiful tomorrow is just a dream away.”

Here are the show’s four new acts:

Act 1: The 1960s
When Carousel of Progress debuted at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, it looked back roughly 60 years to the turn of the century. Following that same approach, the new version begins in the summer of 1969 as the family gathers around the television to witness humanity’s first steps on the Moon.

Act 2: The 1980s
The family celebrates Halloween night in 1985, where daughter Sarah explains how a growing collection of household appliances and new technologies are making things easier.

Act 3: The New Millennium
The family prepares to ring in the year 2000 on New Year’s Eve 1999, as a rapidly expanding internet begins connecting the world in ways previous generations could scarcely imagine.

Act 4: The Possible Future
As with every version of Carousel of Progress, the final act looks ahead. This time, the family’s “out-of-this-world” home features technologies designed to simplify everyday life, including a helpful household robot. In developing the new finale, Imagineers drew inspiration from original concept sketches created by Disney Legend John Hench, revisiting ideas about the future that date back to the attraction’s earliest development.

The new timeline effectively resets the attraction’s historical starting point. Instead of beginning in the world of Walt Disney’s childhood, the story now opens during the Apollo era, reflecting a different generation’s experience with technological progress. While the structure of the show remains familiar, the perspective at its heart will be fundamentally different from the one Walt helped create.

Walt Disney Returns to Carousel of Progress

One of the most significant additions to the attraction will be the addition of Walt Disney himself-ish.  Following the debut of the controversial first-ever Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure in Walt Disney – A Magical Life at Disneyland, Imagineers are creating a second Walt figure for Carousel of Progress.

Inspired by Walt’s appearance in the 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair, the figure will welcome guests and help establish the attraction’s optimistic message about innovation and the future. Imagineers are even recreating props associated with Walt’s original presentation, including the prototype Enchanted Tiki Room bird, a model of Rolly Crump’s Tower of the Four Winds, and an “it’s a small world” doll.

The addition continues Disney’s recent efforts to bring Walt back into the parks through new exhibits and Audio-Animatronics technology. For many fans, seeing Walt become part of Carousel of Progress may feel like a natural fit given his deep involvement with the attraction’s creation and his personal affection for the project.

Yet the new figure also highlights one of the more fascinating aspects of the update. As Walt Disney becomes a more visible presence within the attraction, the show itself is moving farther away from the period of history that shaped his life. Walt will introduce guests to Carousel of Progress, but the story that follows will no longer trace the remarkable technological changes he witnessed firsthand.

An Anthem for Tomorrow

No discussion of Carousel of Progress would be complete without mentioning its iconic theme song, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” Written by Disney Legends Richard and Robert Sherman, the optimistic anthem debuted with the attraction at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair and became synonymous with Walt Disney’s belief that innovation and imagination could help build a better future.

Many guests are surprised to learn that the Sherman Brothers’ song was absent from the attraction for nearly two decades at Walt Disney World. In 1974, sponsor General Electric replaced it with a new theme, “The Best Time of Your Life.” The replacement song remained until a major refurbishment in 1994 restored “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” to the attraction.

Today, both songs remain part of Tomorrowland’s musical legacy. While the Sherman Brothers’ anthem once again serves as the heart of the show, “The Best Time of Your Life” can still be heard in Tomorrowland’s background music loop.

As Disney reimagines Carousel of Progress for a new generation, fans will be relieved to know that the attraction’s most enduring anthem will continue to remind guests that there’s still a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day.

The Price of Progress

Disney deserves credit for investing in an attraction that has been rumored to be on the chopping block for years, and that has, at times, operated only seasonally.

Carousel of Progress has never been one of Magic Kingdom’s most popular attractions, yet it has endured for decades because of what it represents. More than a classic Disney attraction, it is one of the last surviving projects shaped directly by Walt Disney himself and one of the clearest expressions of his optimism about the future.

That is what makes this update both exciting and bittersweet.

The new version appears thoughtfully conceived. Imagineers are preserving the attraction’s core message of progress, incorporating Walt Disney into the experience, and updating a timeline that had become increasingly disconnected from modern audiences. Few would argue that a “future” scene created decades ago could remain relevant forever.

Yet the update changes something fundamental about the attraction.

Carousel of Progress isn’t simply a story about technology. It reflects Walt Disney’s own experience of living through one of the most transformative periods in American history, from the turn of the century through the dawn of the Space Age. The attraction wasn’t just about progress, it was about the progress Walt himself experienced.

Ironically, Walt’s presence within the attraction is about to become greater than ever. A new Audio-Animatronics figure will introduce guests to the experience, even as the attraction itself becomes less connected to the era that shaped his life.

Still, if the alternative was watching Carousel of Progress slowly fade toward eventual closure, most fans would likely welcome a thoughtful update. The attraction’s optimistic message remains intact, and a new generation of guests will have the opportunity to experience its vision of tomorrow.

What is harder to replace is the unique historical perspective that made Carousel of Progress different from almost every other Disney attraction.

There may be another way to honor Walt’s legacy while moving the attraction forward.

Imagine how meaningful it would be to see a version of Walt’s beloved Carousel of Progress recreated at the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, where future generations could continue experiencing one of the attractions most closely tied to Walt’s own life and outlook.

Progress has always been the point of Carousel of Progress. But preserving the past can be part of progress, too.
