There are plenty of documentaries about Disneyland. Most celebrate what the park became. Disneyland Handcrafted is different. It focuses on the terrifying stretch before anyone knew if Disneyland would even work.
I was invited to attend the film’s premiere at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, screened just steps from Walt Disney’s original office suite. Watching a film about Disneyland’s most precarious moment in that setting added an extra layer of authenticity to the experience.
Directed by Leslie Iwerks (who also created the docu-series The Imagineering Story), the film tells the tale of Disneyland’s creation almost entirely through construction footage, photographs, and restored film pulled from the archives. The approach is chronological, but what emerges is not dry history. It’s tension, anxiety, and determination. And a growing realization that Walt Disney put everything on the line.
This is not the perfect Disneyland of souvenir books and smiling cast members. Instead, you will see a massive, chaotic construction site. Men walk steel beams without harnesses. Heavy machinery flies across uneven ground and sometimes even roll over dangerously. By today’s standards, it looks reckless. And in many ways, it was.
The film makes one thing painfully clear, nothing about Disneyland was safe… financially, physically, or emotionally.
Walt’s Impossible Deadline
Walt didn’t just want Disneyland built. He wanted it built NOW. The park was over budget, behind schedule, and bleeding money. Walt invested his own personal funds to keep it moving forward. But Walt wasn’t confident in his success. At multiple points, even he questioned whether the project would ruin him.
That doubt hangs over the film like a cloud. Punctuated by an accompanying score that ratchets up the tension.
You feel the pressure as the calendar flips forward. You see Walt grow frustrated with the pace, knowing full well that the opening date could not move. July 17, 1955 was coming whether the park was ready or not.
And yet, against all reason, it happened. In roughly one year, Disneyland opened… without working drinking fountains, with asphalt that hadn’t cured yet, and where seemingly everything that could go wrong did.
Watching History After Walking in Walt’s Footsteps
For me, watching Disneyland Handcrafted was surreal. Earlier that same day, I stood inside Walt Disney’s 1930s mansion in the Hollywood Hills, the place where he first started seriously thinking about creating a family park decades before Disneyland became real. Following the screening, I got to visit Walt’s office at the studio.
To go from that house… to his movie studio… and then to see this film… was simply the ultimate day of Disney geekery.
The movie drops you into the moment when Walt’s long-held idea stopped being a dream and became a terrifying financial gamble. Standing in his studio and realizing that he risked losing his entire movie empire for Disneyland put it all into perspective.
A Film For The Fans
Not everyone is going to care that it was hard for Walt to build his first park. But Disneyland Handcrafted is essential viewing for Disneyland fans because it strips away nostalgia and replaces it with reality. Disneyland wasn’t inevitable. It wasn’t easy. And it absolutely wasn’t guaranteed to succeed.
This film helps explain why Disneyland feels different from everything that came before and after it. Why it carries the fingerprints of urgency and obsession. Why so much of the park feels handmade, improvised, and intensely personal.
It reminds us that Disneyland exists not because it was safe, but because Walt Disney was willing to risk everything to see it built.
