Well, it’s astounding… time is fleeting… and somehow, Disney owns one of the most rebellious, gender-bending, high-heeled cult classics of all time: The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
No, the House of Mouse didn’t put Goofy in fishnets and heels… But thanks to Bob Iger’s empire-building and Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is now a crown jewel in Disney’s ever-expanding vault. Yes, that means the same company that brought you Elsa, Avatar, and Baby Yoda now also controls the rights to Dr. Frank-N-Furter as well.

And as the film turns 50 this year (try not to shiver with antici… pation), Disney is leaning in, platform boots and all, to celebrate the occasion.
A Very Disney Anniversary For a Very Non-Disney Film We Love
In honor of Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s 50th anniversary, Disney is pulling out all the stops (and probably a few corsets) to celebrate:

- Sept 23–Nov 3: The Rocky Horror Picture Show Spectacular Tour will hit 55 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Fans can meet original cast members Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, and Nell Campbell, grab some merch, and maybe even yell “Dammit, Janet!” at someone who understands.
- Sept 26: The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will host a restored 4K screening (with Q&A).

- Sept 27: The official fan convention takes over the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood with panels, artist signings, and probably more fishnet per capita than the Oscars.
October: A nationwide theatrical re-release of the newly restored 4K Ultra HD version, perfect for both longtime devotees and Rocky Horror virgins. - Oct 4: At the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Cinespia is hosting a special screening under the stars, with a shadow cast, DJs, photo ops, and yes… a Time Warp dance party.

- Oct 7: The 4K Blu-ray hits shelves in a collectible SteelBook®, featuring Dolby Vision® and Atmos® audio. It’ll also be available digitally via Apple, Amazon, and more.

- Oct 10: A deluxe vinyl reissue of the original soundtrack drops—pressed on red-in-gold vinyl and packed with rare photos and production diary entries from the film’s musical producer.
- Oct 15: The GRAMMY Museum will host a screening and music panel, celebrating the soundtrack that still echoes through midnight movie theaters around the world.
And throughout fall: Expect new merch from Funko, Loungefly, RockLove Jewelry, and others—because nothing helps you “make a jump to the left. And then a step to the right” quite like a themed backpack you can take to Disneyland.
From Cult Classic to Corporate Catalog
Rocky Horror wasn’t just a movie—it was a midnight rebellion. It redefined what cinema could be, spawning decades of shadow casts, prop bags, and audience callbacks (“Say it!”). It’s also the longest-running theatrical release in film history, still playing in theaters nearly every week somewhere on Earth.
So how did the film that once shocked polite society end up in the same corporate family as Encanto? Credit Bob Iger’s acquisition spree. When Disney swallowed 20th Century Fox, they inherited not just The Simpsons and Avatar—but The Rocky Horror Picture Show. That’s right, the Mouse now holds the keys to the castle… the creepy one full of glitter and pelvic thrusts.

To their credit, Disney’s restoration team treated Rocky Horror with care. A 10-month effort went into scanning and restoring the film in stunning 4K, with both Dolby Atmos and the original mono mix available for the diehards. They even designed a new 50th anniversary logo, fire-engine red lips and all.
Thrill You, Chill You, Fulfill You
Producer Lou Adler—who’s been with Rocky Horror since its earliest days—put it best:
“What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom.”
That’s what makes this anniversary so fascinating. It’s not just about nostalgia. It’s about the way a scrappy, offbeat film managed to survive, thrive, and eventually land in one of the most corporate ecosystems on Earth without losing its fishnet soul.

So whether you’re a die-hard devotee or a curious newcomer, this fall is your chance to do the Time Warp again—in theaters, under the stars, or from your living room couch. Just bring toast. And rice. And a sense of humor.
Because 50 years later, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is still weird. Still wild. And now, strangely… Disney.
