When you think of the elderly, what comes to mind? Sweet, kind, and frail, perhaps? But what if they were terrifying? In Knott’s Scary Farm’s Widows, a once-quiet convalescent home has become a web of nightmares, where monstrous spiders possess the unsuspecting residents. Join us as we unravel the dark secrets behind this sinister maze— from its eerie inhabitants to the creeping horrors that spin their webs beneath.

Now, step closer… the nightmare is just outside.

I know an old lady who swallowed a spider; It wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her— perhaps she’ll die!

Approaching the Sunset Rise Nursing Home, it’s clear the dwelling has seen better days. This converted Victorian house, now a convalescent home for wayward widows, once exuded charm, reminiscent of the Pink Lady mansion in Eureka, CA. With its dollhouse-like structure and delicate carved hearts, it was once a symbol of elegance—now overtaken by shadows and decay.

Today, it’s a picture of decay. The once-vibrant pink paint has long since faded, leaving the structure dull and dilapidated. More unsettling are the massive spiders perched ominously atop the house—one so heavy it’s splitting the building in two, while another prowls across the roof of the covered patio, disturbing the crumbling shingles. A thick, eerie green fog seeps from beneath the convalescent home, hinting at the horrors that lurk in the shadows below.

Granny’s voice echoes in the distance, a desperate cry for help that lures in anyone brave enough to follow—only to entangle them in her deadly web.

As you follow Granny’s desperate cries into the decaying structure, it quickly becomes clear that something is horribly wrong. The convalescent home and its elderly residents are far from what they appear. Giant spiders have taken root within the frail bodies of the inhabitants, transforming once-innocent grannies into predatory creatures, eager to ensnare unsuspecting visitors in their lethal webs.

Now, the residents have just one terrifying purpose: to find a mate before dawn and lay a clutch of eggs, ensuring the birth of a new brood of sisters ready to continue the nightmare!

As you venture deeper into the spider lair, the webs grow thicker, entangling the remains of the spiders’ unfortunate victims. With each step, the eerie chants of the sisters echo louder, reverberating through the twisted halls, signaling that you’re approaching the heart of their sinister domain.

The spiders have torn open an infernal portal, summoning their dark deity— the Spider Queen Arachne. Her devoted followers now sustain the vast web that feeds her children, while a venomous pool serves as the Queen’s nectar. As you push deeper into the lair, the haunting whispers of her worshippers cling to the air, pulling you closer to the source of their twisted devotion…

Another sacrifice for the queen! Don’t drain him too dry…

This is the monstrous story of Widows, one of two incredible new mazes for this season’s Knott’s Scary Farm. If you missed our initial coverage of Scary Farm this year, please visit our guide:

I also created a short teaser for Widows, which you can watch here:

To tell the deeper story of Widows, I enlisted the help of creative designer Daniel Miller. A Scary Farm veteran, Daniel has created many of our favorite Knott’s Scary Farm experiences in recent years, including last year’s gruesome Cinema Slasher. Daniel is so legendary, in fact, that fellow designer Gus Krueger created an entire workshop dedicated to Daniel’s long Scary Farm career in this year’s other new maze, Eight Fingers Nine: The Boogeyman. Of course, that’s in addition to Gus’ references to Daniel’s previous mazes in The Chilling Chambers last year. The Knott’s Scary Farm team loves their history.

One of the most striking features of Widows greets you before you even step inside: the facade. I highlighted it earlier in the article for good reason—it’s a perfect example of Daniel Miller’s storytelling approach. The facade sets up the story while giving you a glimpse of what’s to come without a word, all the way down to the ominous green glow hinting at the spider lair waiting below. Daniel’s only wish? That the massive spider cracking the house like an egg could have been even bigger.

The occult-like spider lair beneath the house is one of the more intriguing aspects of Widows. These spiders aren’t merely mindless predators—they operate within a strict hierarchy. At the top is the Goddess Spider Queen, Arachne, who, along with her sisters, is summoned through a portal by one of the possessed grannies. Every spider in this twisted realm answers to Arachne. Some maintain the web that ensnares victims to feed her brood, while others donate their venom to sustain the queen’s power.

Another distinctive element is the soundtrack, which Daniel acknowledged is a bit more eclectic than usual. Knott’s licenses and mixes film soundtracks into their mazes, choosing songs that evoke the desired emotion. Instead of using one or two tracks, Daniel’s team opted to create a hybrid mix of a variety of soundtracks. Among others, parts of the music utilize Mica Levi’s dark Under the Skin score layering it with Jerskin Fendrix’s bizarre strings from Poor Things.

Daniel chose spiders and grannies as they contrast one another. Spiders are carnivorous, small, and sleek, yet powerful. Their sticky webs catch their prey and their venom is lethal, especially to humans. Giant demon spiders, then, pose an even bigger threat as their webs grow from a nuisance that gets stuck in your face to a deadly grave.

Daniel explained that initially, this scene had a strong pre-recorded voiceover. They had to turn it down because they found this granny’s sweet, lovable performance to be so powerful.

Grannies are often kind and sweet, offering love and only seeking companionship in their old age. But Daniel has twisted them into something horrific. The rapid movements fueled by their spider inhabitants create a jarring juxtaposition.

Personally, Daniel doesn’t like spiders and thinks they are creepy. That has translated into a frightening but also beautiful and theatrical experience.

The addition of the mysterious backstory for Arachne’s followers heightens the sense of danger. These aren’t mindless arachnids driven solely by the need to feed; they are devoted servants of their queen. Web weaving is seen as a sacred duty, essential for capturing prey. The spider priestesses gather venom as nectar to fuel the queen’s visions of her entire realm. Daniel subtly weaves these elements of exposition into the maze, as you push past the silky cocoons of their victims, around altars, and finally into the chambers of Queen Arachne herself.

Getting clean photos of Arachne required extra trips through the maze! The spider queen’s lair is dark, only illuminated by a flashing green light! It was all worth it in the end, isn’t she splendid?

Widows remind me a bit of a campy 80s horror film but with extra fangs. As a fun last question for Daniel, I asked what a film adaptation of the maze would be about and who his dream director would be:

I love John Carpenter, from the tense Halloween to the creepy Fog. Most of his movies take place in one night, which I imagine this movie would be. The story starts with an innocent family coming to visit their grandmother at her convalescent home. Much to their surprise the Granny is looking a little odd and pale. From her bed, she splits open and thousands of spiders spring forth. The attack ensues as the family fights off the encroaching arachnid army. Gus, the grandson, is taken prisoner and dragged into the horrors of the web. The family must follow to free their child from the sinister clutches of Arachne!

John Carpenter’s style of slow-building tension would definitely pair well with Widows’ unsettling story progression. Daniel’s already written the basic synopsis!

Knott’s Scary Farm’s 51st season continues on select days through November 2nd! Be sure to head down to the farm and visit Grandma before the fog recedes until next year.
