“Who’s that comin’ down the street?”… If there’s one film that never gets old during Halloween movie marathon season, it’s “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.” On top of compelling storylines (inspired by two classic pieces of literature) the films boast whimsical animation, a snappy soundtrack, and entertaining comedy…all with the perfect sprinkling of spooky magic. And this year, the cult classic celebrates its 75th anniversary!

The duo premiered together on October 5, 1949, but there’s much more to the story than meets the eye. Let’s embark on an adventure behind the scenes as we look at the film’s history, admire its animation, follow its trail through the Disneyland Resort, and check out the spooky season events they’ve inspired for 2024. In the words of J. Thaddeus Toad, Esq. “Come along, hop up here, we’ll go for a jolly ride!”
“The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad”: Plot Summary
“The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” contains two tales; let’s start with Mr. Toad’s.
“The Wind in the Willows”
Mr. Toad’s story begins in a sophisticated library, where narrator Basil Rathbone takes us through a collection of English literature until reaching “The Wind in the Willows,” by Kenneth Grahame. And so, our introduction to the fascinating world of J. Thaddeus Toad, Esq. commences…

Immediately obvious is the adventurous and reckless nature of the larger-than-life character. Toad is a loose cannon with three friends (a rat, a mole, and a badger) who have his best interests at heart. But Toad doesn’t always make things easy. You see, the spontaneous frog has a weak spot; he’s obsessed with modern modes of transportation. You gotta love the guy!

Unfortunately, his obsession eventually gets him into trouble, landing him in jail for car thievery. With the deed to Toad Hall gone, he vows never to give into his mania again, although this promise doesn’t last long. He breaks out and recovers the document from Winkie and the weasels – the tricksters that deceived him. With the truth of the stolen car made public, Toad is exonerated. As his friends toast to his new and improved persona, they’re interrupted by the sound of a 1908 biplane, with none other than Toad as its reckless pilot. And so the story ends…some things never change, but I don’t think we’d want them to in the case of the fabulous J. Thaddeus Toad, Esq.

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
As we return to the library and close the book on Mr. Toad, we’re met with a new and, might I say, iconic voice. Bing Crosby is our new narrator who whisks us into a separate room brimming with American literature. Here, we’re introduced to an equally fascinating character, Ichabod Crane (AKA Old Icky) via “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving.

At first glance, Ichabod seems like a nice guy, although the lanky schoolmaster certainly has his quirks. The tale unfolds to reveal his arrival in the little village of Sleepy Hollow, an area marked by hauntings and superstition. Ichabod’s entrance is one of my favorite scenes. As he struts through the village, Bing Crosby croons a toe-tapping tune about the peculiar character that you won’t be able to get out of your head – but I’m not complaining!

We soon find out that this superstitious visitor is a bit of a ladies’ man with an appetite for both food and the finer things in life. He falls for the town beauty, Katrina Van Tassel, or more specifically, for her money, inciting the anger of Brom Bones, the village bully who already has eyes for the fair maiden.

On Halloween night, Bones attempts to frighten Ichabad with the story of the Headless Horseman.

Upon Ichabod’s departure, he comes face to face (or neck to neck in this case) with the mysterious phantom and goes missing, never to be heard from again.

Katrina and Brom end up getting married, and it’s happily ever after…at least for them.
“The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” History & Animation
As glaringly evident in the images above, the animation in this film is gorgeous, featuring beautiful backgrounds and vibrant color palettes. Unsurprisingly, Walt Disney had a hand in their production, going so far as to visit Tarrytown, New York to ensure the right feel for the Ichabod Crane episode. Speaking of which, did you know… the Ichabod episode was originally slated to be a full-length feature. Unfortunately, the price was too steep post-World War II, so the studio paired it with “The Wind in the Willows,” originally dubbing it “Two Fabulous Characters.” It’s safe to say we’re all happy about its eventual name change to “Ichabod and Mr. Toad.” Do you agree?

And here are some drawings for Ichabod’s portion.

The storyboarding process developed by Walt Disney Studios was used in the film and continues to be an essential tool for creating cohesive and entertaining storylines.

If you’re a fan of animation, you’ll love this video from Disney Legend and animator Eric Goldberg explaining why “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” is one of his favorite spooky season films. “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” At the Disneyland Resort
Tributes to “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” can be found at both Disneyland and California Adventure.
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride in Fantasyland at Disneyland Park
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is an attraction we rarely miss when visiting Disneyland. There’s just something special about this experience that makes it a must-do. One of the original Disneyland dark rides, it opened with the park on July 17, 1955, and underwent a remodel in 1983. Among the attraction’s standout features is its immersive nature which begins the moment you arrive at Toad Hall.

Have you ever stopped to notice the amazing details in Mr. Toad’s facade?

Once inside, the ambiance immediately whisks you into the tale of J. Thaddeus Toad, Esq. with its dark and sinister vibes.

Are you ready for your wild ride?

Last year, Mr Toad’s Wild Ride underwent another refurbishment at Disneyland, donning repainted sets and new black lights. Take a ride through the attraction with us below!
We’re lucky that Southern California’s version has remained at the park; Walt Disney World’s ride was removed from Magic Kingdom in 1998 to make room for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, although you may still find remnants of it around the Resort!

Toad Hall in Storybook Land Canal Boats at Disneyland Park
An imaginative section of Fantasyland beckons animation lovers to a place where stories come to life in miniature form. Storybook Land Canal Boats opened on June 16, 1956, nearly a year after Disneyland’s debut, although Canal Boats of the World was its former resident from July 17 to September 16, 1955.

This ride makes you feel like you’re living in a fairy tale the moment your boat leaves the dock. From entering the jaws of Pinocchio’s Monstro to visiting scenes from your favorite Disney films, it’s a magical (and beautiful) journey. As your boat whisks through the various animated worlds, you’ll notice a tribute to Mr. Toad – Toad Hall is perfectly situated on the water, just like in the film!

The Headless Horseman during Halloween Time at Disney California Adventure
While it’s true there are more tributes to Mr. Toad at Disneyland, an impressive display honors Ichabod’s story during Halloween at Disney California Adventure. The Headless Horseman rides again this year in his typical spot in front of Elias & Co.
Just a wave of your MagicBand can bring him to life!
You can even catch Ichabod kicking off Oogie Boogie Bash’s Frightfully Fun Parade with The Headless Horseman hot on his trail!

Disney Hollywood Mansion Tours
If you can’t get enough of the Headless Horseman, take a tour of the Disney estate with Dusty Sage this Halloween season. It’s the house in Hollywood where Walt lived when working on The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Dusty even has this exact film playing in Walt’s screening room during your tour!

Note that there are two versions of the tour, Walt Disney history tours by day and spooky candlelight ghost tours at night. Both tours feature the Headless Horseman at this time of year.
