In the vibrant cosmos of Disney enthusiasts, few stars have shone as brightly or as fervently as Al Lutz, the founder of MiceAge.com and my good friend, business partner, and roommate for the best years of my life.

When Al retired in 2013, we produced an honorary Window on Main Street for him. It read: The Main Street Tattler, Shining a Light on Main Street’s Dark Corners. Tall Tales and Pragmatic Prognostications. Al Lutz, Investigative Reporter.

Al’s journey came to a poignant end this morning after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease, but his spirit, encapsulated in his biting wit and relentless pursuit of excellence for Disney, endures. Today, we not only mourn a monumental loss but also celebrate a legacy that forever altered the landscape of Disney fandom and critique.

Al’s tenure as a Disney watchdog was nothing short of remarkable. He was not just a fan; he was a beacon for authenticity, often holding the colossal Disney empire to the standard Walt himself had set for it.

Al came from the music industry, where he produced Bibbidi Bobbidi Bach and Heigh-Ho Mozart (both featuring Dolby Surround, a cool innovation at the time). But his biggest accomplishment, MiceAge.com, became more than a platform; it was a pulsing nerve center for insiders, enthusiasts, and critics alike. His in-depth articles, peppered with insider knowledge and a touch of sarcasm, peeled back the curtains of the Happiest Place on Earth, revealing a world that was as complex as it was magical.

One cannot reflect on Al’s impact without mentioning his most famous stories. His explosive 2005 piece unveiling the behind-the-scenes challenges of Disneyland’s 50th anniversary sent ripples through the Disney community. His revelations were not just gossip; they were a clarion call for transparency and accountability, a demand that Disney live up to its own legends.

Al’s fearless reporting continued over the years, uncovering everything from executive changes to project delays, always with a sharp eye and an even sharper pen.

Al’s desire for Disney to be the “very best version of itself” was not born from criticism but from a deep-seated love for the Disney ethos. He believed in Disney’s magic, its capacity to enchant and inspire. His critiques were never mean-spirited; they were the musings of a man who cared deeply about preserving the integrity of a world that promises wonder and joy to all who enter its gates.

When Al retired in 2013, we threw him a special celebration. Even Disney legends Rolly Crump and Bob Gurr were there

As we continue to forge ahead, Al’s ethos remains our guiding star. We honor his legacy by upholding the same standards of honesty, thoroughness, and slightly irreverent scrutiny that he championed. In doing so, we hope to ensure that Disney not only remains true to its founding principles but also continues to evolve, captivating hearts in ways that Al Lutz himself would have admired and advocated for.

Please join me in sending loving thoughts and prayers to Al’s family and friends who are hurting so much right now.

I’ll miss you my friend… May you find your Neverland. It’s the second star to the right, but you knew that already.
