The soundtrack plays on repeat in my head, years later, “it’s a small world”-style. Don’t get me wrong, I love Disneyland’s Christmas parade…and have for 28 years. That’s right, Disneyland’s “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” has been ringing in the season for almost three decades. Debuting in 1995, it replaced the similar “Very Merry Christmas Parade.”
With Disneyland in a constant state of transformation, I’ve often wondered why the Resort hasn’t brought in a new holiday procession. While sticking with the same parade has its obvious benefits from a financial and convenience standpoint, is this show just sticking around because of nostalgia or because there are no ideas about what could replace it? It’s always exciting to see the unique offerings at Disney Parks around the world. In celebration of the season, let’s take a look at all of the different Christmas parades starting with The Happiest Place on Earth! Then let us know which look most magical to you.
Disneyland Resort ~ “A Christmas Fantasy Parade”
Although it has undergone some changes, with varying elements swapped out or lost over the years, the theme of “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” remains the same. The forty-minute procession features beloved Disney characters in their Christmas best, along with iconic holiday additions, such as reindeer, toy soldiers, gingerbread cookies, and snowmen.
Set to a soundtrack you won’t soon forget, snippets are often featured on the “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade”. Highlights include a Letters to Santa float featuring Mickey and Minnie and Chip ‘n Dale, a Frozen float with Anna and Elsa, a Disney Princess float, and a Toy Story-themed building blocks float featuring Woody and Buzz.
Walt Disney World Resort ~ “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade”
Disney World’s Christmas Parade is part of a separately ticketed event, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade is a 25-minute procession offered on select nights, through December 22, but is typically available to daytime guests afterward through December 31.
Featuring Disney characters, gingerbread men, toy soldiers, and of course, St. Nick, it’s been enchanting guests of Magic Kingdom Park since 2007.
Disneyland Paris ~ “Mickey’s Dazzling Christmas Parade”
The holiday parade at Disneyland Paris is quite the spectacle! It feels like “A Christmas Fantasy” meets “Paint the Night” in “Mickey’s Dazzling Christmas Parade.” Whimsical and sparkly, it’s filled with magical grandeur!
This parade is so impressive, that it actually garnered an award last year. Presented by The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), it won the Brass Ring Award for Most Creative Christmas/Holiday Show in 2022. Relatively new, “Mickeys Dazzling Christmas Parade” debuted in 2021, and has some interesting characteristics. Comprised of five themed floats, it features Mickey and Friends, Disney Princesses, Santa Claus, and Tinkerbell! Especially enchanting is its transformation from the daytime version to night, with illuminating lights that “tell a new story”.
Tokyo Disneyland ~ “Disney Christmas Stories”
Tokyo Disneyland’s Christmas parade is a warm and fuzzy storytime of Disney friends and their loved ones. “Disney Christmas Stories” debuted in 2015, and features Disney characters dressed in their holiday best. A wide array of dancers accompany the floats on a magical parade route. In this procession, Santa Claus is actually portrayed by Donald Duck! Accompanied by Daisy and his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, it’s a family affair.
Mickey and Minnie adorn a float with Goofy, Chip ‘n Dale!
Although more simplistic in style, the floats evoke the essence of ToonTown, with a magical cartoon-like appearance. Buzz, Woody, and Jessie sit atop their very own float, complete with presents, ornaments, and the ever-lovable aliens from Toy Story. Other beautifully themed floats feature Snow White, Lilo and Stitch, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen! There are even some prancing deer and festive snowmen like in Disneyland’s parade!
Shanghai Disneyland ~ “Disney Winter Magic Cavalcade”
Duffy and Friends are the stars of the show for Shanghai Disneyland’s “Disney Winter Magic Cavalcade”. Debuting in 2022, Mickey and friends are also in attendance, as well as some other unique additions. Highlights include a Zootopia-themed float with Nick and Judy onboard a snowmobile!
There’s also a Beauty and the Beast snowplay float. The Incredibles are featured in a celebration of winter in the city, and Frozen is represented by Elsa, Anna, and Olaf in Arendelle. The parade really comes to life at night with twinkle lights that set Shanghai Disneyland aglow!
Hong Kong Disneyland
