Welcome to MiceShots, where you can experience a unique perspective of Disneyland Parks through the lens of our photographers. This week, we glimpse Main Street U.S.A., just as the orange and yellow of Halloween are replaced with Christmastime colors (the holidays officially launch on November 10th, 2023). Sure, the fall mercury readings could’ve fooled us into thinking it was mid-July, but the nippy narratives on display begged to differ. Join us for a leisurely jaunt down Disneyland’s Main Street, with sights that promise to be a refreshing breather this week before the yuletide avalanche.

Disneyland Main Street USA:
Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A. is the original fully themed land. Designed to resemble American small towns from the 1800s, one of the key inspirations was Walt Disney’s boyhood hometown of Marceline, Missouri. Walt himself said, “For those of us who remember the carefree time it recreates, Main Street will bring back happy memories. For younger visitors, it is an adventure in turning back the calendar to the days of their grandfather’s youth.” Today, you can add a few “grands” to the word father.
Now, as Disneyland transitions from beautiful Autumn decorations to the magic of the holidays, we would be honored for you to join us on a leisurely stroll down the beloved Disney icon, Main Street U.S.A.
If you’re looking for a fun way to explore the park without walking too much, you can take the Disneyland Railroad. It stops at New Orleans Square, Toontown, Tomorrowland, and returns to the Main Street Depot, giving you the opportunity to take the grand circle tour or get off at a station closest to your favorite attractions.

Inside the Main Street Station, there are great momentos of one of Walt’s favorite past times… model trains!

Here’s a one minute journey on the Railroad with Dusty Sage from last year:
In Town Square, you have a variety of options for transportation to the end of Main Street. You can choose to ride a fire truck, a horse-drawn trolley, the Omnibus, or one of the other cars available. These modes of transportation will provide a scenic view of Main Street without tiring your feet.

At the Disneyland Fire Department, you can get up close to the horse-drawn water tender and check out the fine details of the fire department of the 1800s. Above the fire station is Walt’s private apartment. The lamp in the window is always lit to represent that Walt’s presence is always felt at Disneyland (during the holidays, it’s replaced by an illuminated mini Christmas tree).

Did You Know?
When Disneyland was still new, a guest climbed up the firehouse pole and popped his head through the hole, catching Walt Disney himself in the upstairs apartment. The two had a brief and friendly exchange before the guest slid back down the pole. Shortly after that encounter, the section of the pole that extended into the apartment was removed, and workers sealed the hole.

Exiting the fire station, you’ll find the hand-painted gates where the Main Street vehicles go in and out. This gate also serves as the exit for the overflow guest walkway on extra jam-packed park days.

As you stroll through Town Square, there are always interesting characters to see. During the Halloween festivities, we met Mickey, Minnie, Chip & Dale, and others, all dressed up in their spooky costumes. You might also spot Jafar and the Queen of Hearts.

The Main Street Cinema is home to some of Walt Disney’s earliest animations. It can be a great break from the heat. There are some wonderful details that you can see from the moment you step up to the ticket booth.

Tilly, the ticket taker, is always dressed for the occasion. Currently, she is wearing an ensemble dedicated to the Disney100 celebration. Her style perfectly embodies where the Walt Disney Company started 100 years ago.

Throughout the day, the Dapper Dans perform festive tunes at different spots on Main Street. You may come across them on the Porch, opposite the Crystal Arcade, or in front of the Fire Station. Sometimes, you may even spot them riding on the horse-drawn trolley.

Plaza Point used to be the photo store. However, just before last Christmas, it was transformed into the Holiday Shoppe – a store offering items for all holidays throughout the year. Although the merchandise changes with the season, Christmas ornaments are always available.

It’s always fun to stop and watch The Straw Hat Band.

Well, here we are at the end of our stroll. Main Street ends at The Hub, and now we have to decide: Which direction to go? I almost always find myself heading toward Adventureland. Which way do you go?
