In a not-so-shocking turn of events, Disney CEO Robert Iger has decided to extend his time with the company. Although Iger had previously committed to a brief 2-year tenure in his return as CEO of The Walt Disney Company, he confirmed today that he will retain his position through at least December 2026. Here are the details about Bob Iger staying on as Disney CEO.
Bob Iger Continues as Disney CEO Through 2026
After Bob Chapek was dramatically removed as CEO of Disney in 2022, Bob Iger took the helm again (after previously relinquishing the position to Chapek in 2020). While Iger’s return to Disney was intended to be short-term, with his expected end date to be in 2024, The Walt Disney Company’s board voted unanimously to extend Iger’s contract through the end of 2026. Chairman of The Walt Disney Company Mark Parker shared:
Time and again, Bob has shown an unparalleled ability to successfully transform Disney to drive future growth and financial returns, earning him a reputation as one of the world’s best CEOs. Bob has once again set Disney on the right strategic path for ongoing value creation, and to ensure the successful completion of this transformation while also allowing ample time to position a new CEO for long-term success, the Board determined it is in the best interest of shareholders to extend his tenure, and he has agreed to our request to remain Chief Executive Officer through the end of 2026.
In his own statement, Iger stated:
Because I want to ensure Disney is strongly positioned when my successor takes the helm, I have agreed to the Board’s request to remain CEO for an additional two years. The importance of the succession process cannot be overstated, and as the Board continues to evaluate a highly qualified slate of internal and external candidates, I remain intensely focused on a successful transition.
While Iger will remain as the CEO of Disney for the next three years, he is also committed to “work[ing] closely with the board in developing a successor to lead the company at the completion of his term.”
Shall we start taking bets on how long it will be before Josh D’Amaro is promoted to COO or CFO in preparation to eventually replace Bob?
Who would you like to see eventually replace Iger as Disney CEO?
