For devoted Disneyland enthusiasts, merely mentioning “it’s a small world” can trigger the beloved tune to play on repeat in our minds. In recent weeks, we’ve received multiple requests to feature this global gem in our MiceShots photography column. Well, your wish is our command! Today, we’re embarking on a photographic journey through the “Happiest Cruise that Ever Sailed,” where, truly, ‘a smile means friendship to everyone.’ Enjoy this world of laughter and tears, as we bring this timeless wonder to your home.
it’s a small world
Before we set sail, let’s explore a little history. “it’s a small world” was originally displayed at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. When the World’s Fair ended in 1966, the attraction was moved to Disneyland. Mary Blair was the attraction’s art designer and her artistic charm is woven throughout the attraction. The scenes of Small World were designed by animator Marc Davis; his wife Alice Davis created the costumes for the dolls. Rolly Crump was the mastermind behind the toys and other figures in the whimsical attraction, as well as the massive Tower of the Four Winds which stood in front of the original World’s Fair version of the ride.
While ‘Children of the World’ was the working title for the attraction during its development, a name change was prompted by the creation of a now-iconic song. The Sherman brothers crafted the unforgettable tune, ‘It’s a Small World After All,’ and in doing so, solidified the attraction’s final name. This melody is not only the heart of the ride, but is also considered one of the most performed pieces of music ever produced. Now, without further ado, let’s embark on a journey through the friendliest waterways in the world.

In the 2008 refurbishment, the attraction received 29 new Disney characters, each placed in their native lands.
Not all of the Disney characters are easy to spot (or photograph). Some are up above your head.
The animals throughout Small World have a lot of charm. But when you go through the African sequence, the charisma factor is ramped up to an 11.
Every secene is packed with details, artwork inspired by various regions of the world, and children wearing the cultural or ceremonial clothing of their country.
Disney characters are now woven into the attraction, showing that Imagineers continue to tinker with rides to keep them fresh, even an attraction which is nearly 6 decades old. Nothing is set in stone at Disney.
It’s been quite a while since we have seen all of the Hula Dancers back on the stage and working. On a recent ride-through, we were delighted to see the group complete again with all five dancers.
And one golden sun
And a smile means
Friendship to ev’ryone
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It’s a small world after all
The finale of the attraction unites all of the children of the world in a single scene.
And let’s take a ride with Dusty Sage. There’s a bit of a surprise at the end. Yes, those are projections on the facade from the Halloween Screams fireworks as this video was recorded in November of last year:

From November through late January, the attraction is given a major makeover, transforming into It’s a Small World Holiday. Inside and out, the attraction is completely given a holiday look. Be sure to check back with us in November to see the Holiday version of this attraction on MiceShots!
