You never really know what might happen at Disneyland from week to week. This time around, we had a mix of new festival food, an exciting sighting in Toontown, and even a bit of real snow (that wasn’t really snow at all). On top of it all, there’s progress on several big construction projects and others that seem like they may never wrap up. We’ve collected all the stories and photos for you from around the Disneyland Resort…

The Post-Rain and Pre-Spring Break Crowds

After a week of heavy rain, cold temperatures, and high winds, the crowds have finally returned to the Disneyland Resort. With the return of Food and Wine Festival and some unofficial fan events, the crowds were heavy over the weekend. There were times and locations that felt particularly uncomfortable, such as the Disney California Adventure parade route, Fantasyland parade crossing, and parts of New Orleans Square. But unlike days of yore, when vast sections of the park were nearly impossible to navigate, park reservations still manage to keep the experience from feeling impossible to bear.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

While Rise of the Resistance and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway continue to have the longest waits, both rides had times when their waits were near an hour (which is good), but also peaks of an hour and a half to two hours (which isn’t worth it in our opinion). The addition of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway has absolutely helped moderate the often crazy waits in Star Wars land.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
Huge line for Rise of the Resistance Lightning Lane and much longer for standby. When the ride has frequent or long downtime, it impacts Lightning Lane for the rest of the day as they attempt to accommodate all those paid skip-the-line folks.

When Rise of the Resistance broke down on Sunday, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway spiked to two hours.

But the parks were still a bit busier than they normally are… smaller rides like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and the Mad Tea Party had half an hour waits for large portions of the weekend, with Star Tours, Buzz Lightyear, Jungle Cruise and the other moderate rides in the 30 to 45-minute range (less during parades and fireworks).

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
Long overflow queue for StarTours
, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
Even Goofy had a crush of guests wanting to see him

But one ride that continues to battle thrill rides like Space Mountain and Big Thunder is Haunted Mansion, which consistently had 45-minute to hour-long waits (particularly later in the day). The ride returned from holiday mode in early February and has remained a top draw in the park ever since.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

We took some video for you… time for a ride break…

Pirates and Big Thunder continue to have more downtime than normal… which becomes a problem when Rise of the Resistance and/or Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway are down at the same time.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

It doesn’t take many big people-eater attractions to be down before Disneyland guests feel the pain of longer waits… Especially with Indiana Jones closed for a long refurbishment just next door.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Over at Disney California Adventure, the return of Food & Wine Festival has made the park feel much more crowded. And it’s pretty clear that Disney has raised the max attendance level, justified in part by the increase in dining capacity from all the food booths.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!Soarin’ has once again adopted the “Over California” film (temporarily for the Food and Wine Festival, but we’d like it to stay all of the time in at least one of the two theaters), which is always a crowd favorite.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Even Little Mermaid was using its overflow queue this weekend. The super high-capacity ride is generally a walk-on, but not right now.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
All of those people you see on the left are waiting for the Little Mermaid attraction. Generally the regular built-in queue is far more than enough and outdoor switchbacks are rarely needed.

So, for a Festival launch weekend, Disneyland Resort was VERY busy, but also still quite manageable.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
Even at a near 60 minute wait, the Haunted Mansion still didn’t need to use Magnolia Gardens as overflow on Friday. It’s a good sign if you walk by this area and see the garden area empty.

But don’t expect things to get any easier for the next couple of months. Looking at Disney’s single-day ticket calendar, prices start skyrocketing next week and stay that way until the end of next month due to Spring Break demand.

There are lots of $175 days ahead (compare that to the lowest cost $104 days!)

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

(Just a tip – Don’t pay full price for tickets, MiceChat partners with Get Away Today Travel to provide you with discounts on theme park tickets and hotel rooms! You’ll currently find extra day(s) free offers for both Disneyland and Walt Disney World HERE)

While Spring Break means lots more people, it usually also means extra entertainment and ways to keep all those extra guests happy. So, if riding a lot of attractions isn’t your goal, a busy Spring Break day can still be quite enjoyable, especially with a food festival going on and spring flowers about to burst into full color.

Food & Wine Festival Opens

Disney California Adventure is at its best when there’s a festival going on. And it’s a prime reason why the resort felt so busy this past weekend. But lucky for all the folks headed to Disneyland during the busy spring break season, the Food & Wine Festival will be taking place through April 25th. While this fest is largely about food, there’s also special entertainment, culinary demonstrations, and the return of a classic DCA attraction! I enlisted our resident foodie, Nathan, to share a quick rundown of this year’s highlights…

Inventive Food & Wine Festival Food

While the culinary team at DCA like to flex their creative muscles during all of the festivals, the big guns come out to play during Food & Wine. This year, the majority of the items are approachable while still trying something new.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

There are 12 marketplaces to choose from, plus a whole bunch of participating locations around the park and in Downtown Disney. The food booths soft-opened on March 2nd, with the full festival kicking off on the 3rd. We had a camera at the ready, take a walk-through of the Festival with Dusty and Nathan:

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

And while it wasn’t busy during the preview on the 2nd, over the weekend the marketplaces were all packed with guests. Like many things at the Disneyland Resort these days, the way things work has gotten a little more complicated than necessary. Guests will need to wait in two separate lines to buy food, once to place an order and a second time to pick it up. In the old days, you’d order your food and go straight to the window to pick it up. That usually worked just fine.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

But the real reason for the 2nd line to pick up food is because Disney offers the ability to order from multiple locations at one time and then just use your receipt to pick up the items. Just like Lightning Lane, it’s a line-shifting scheme to make Disney a little extra money. Yes, there’s an advantage to ordering many items at once… but it results in much longer waits than necessary for those who only want one thing.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

We noticed that some of the food booths are in different locations this year, presumably to help spread out the crowds. Some of the popular booths are placed further along the parade route (particularly Cluck-A-Doodle-Moo and California Craft Brews), so if your favorite location isn’t in its usual spot, just consult the handy map in the Tasting Passport.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Sip & Savor Passes are available for the festival ($59 or $54 for Magic Keyholders). These passes get you 8 items (food or nonalcoholic beverages) from the marketplaces or participating locations.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Here are some of Nathan’s thoughts on a few of the notable new items this year:

  • BBQ Beef Brisket Slider featuring Fiscalini Farmstead Smoked Cheddar with dill pickles on salt and pepper brioche

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

There’s always a beef slider of some sort. This year’s version was pretty good. You get a decent bite to eat for a hefty $9. Sweet barbeque sauce with tangy pickles. One of the top items this year, for sure.

  • Elote Paleta: Frozen sweet corn paleta with parm crema, chile-lime seasoning, corn crunch, and cilantro

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

You might think I’ve lost my mind, but this corn popsicle is actually pretty good! Although I wish that it was presented as a scoop of sorbet instead of a popsicle, flavor-wise it works quite well. The corn flavor is reminiscent of creamed corn and the freeze-dried corn nuggets add a nice crunch. The only offputting part of the dish is the parm crema.

  • Beef & Barley Poutine: Potato bites with braised beef short rib, cheese curds, stout gravy, and lager micro sponge

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Our team had mixed opinions about this dish. Some thought it was a nice twist on poutine. Others thought that it was fairly bland. We were all hoping for a more exciting potato option than tater tots, but tots are also a festival staple. The weird “lager micro sponge” is probably the best-tasting part of the dish. We look forward to your thoughts on this dish.

There’s plenty more food to be found around the park as well as part of the festival. Head back to the Festival Beer Garden at Paradise Garden to enjoy a cool beer in the shade.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Plus, for the first time ever, an eatery at the Disneyland Resort features an entirely plant-based menu. Paradise Garden Grill’s seasonal menu is exclusively plant-forward items (we’re hesitant to call them vegan since some seem to contain cheese and/or eggs; it’s possible that those items are plant-based, but they are not explicitly called out as such).  You’ll find items like “Bulbogi” Fried Rice and Peach Blueberry Cobbler.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

You can find local vendors along the parade route offering their own special treats. We spotted Kayla’s Cakes selling macarons.

Food & Wine Festival 2023 Merchandise

Of course, there are plenty of merchandise offerings created just for the festival. Here’s a peek:

This year’s Spirit Jersey has both Chef Mickey and Chef Minnie, plus silhouettes of iconic DCA landmarks on it.

Ears are a must for any special occasion at the Disneyland Resort.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

There’s even a Magic Keyholder exclusive T-shirt that people have been clamoring over.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Speaking of Magic Keyholders, there’s a special Magic Key pavilion located between the entries to Avengers Campus and Cars Land that has a few tables and a special photo op.

Food & Wine Festival 2023 Entertainment

Another thing we love about DCA’s festivals is the increase in entertainment around the park. For Food & Wine, you can find a mix of everything, from jazz and swing to pop and everything in between. We caught the Standard Mel Quartet at the Paradise Garden and we absolutely loved every minute of it. She’s a Disneyland treasure!

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

The popular Jammin’ Chefs returns in a new location this year. Out by the Obelisk in front of the Embarcadero, you can see some rhythmic chefs grooving out with some of your favorite Disney characters. We saw Clarabelle, Daisy, Chip, and Dale this time around.

Out in the Hollywood Backlot, you can meet with Chef Goofy.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

If you’re feeling creative, you can also make a toque (a chef’s hat) or a placemat at the craft area along the parade route.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Soarin’ Over California Returns!

While everything above is exciting in its own right, a big reason why people really love Food & Wine is the return of Soarin’ Over California! For the duration of the festival, the cult classic original version of Soarin’ plays daily.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

You can expect long waits for this attraction. People really love the smell of those orange groves!

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Since there are two Soarin’ theaters, we’d love to see Soarin’ Over California stay permanently in at least one theater, if not both.

Snow at Disneyland?!

The twit-toc-book social universe melted down last week when it “snowed” at Disneyland. Since it was 50º outside at the time, many folks argued that it must actually be hail… MiceChat Facebook Group member, David McDaniel, posted this unimaginable video of what sure does look like snow in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland:

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

But thanks to another MiceChat Group member, Alyssa Sheffler, we learned that it was neither snow nor hail but rather something called “graupel.”

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

It was a wild moment that lots of guests to Disneyland will never forget. Did you see the graupel at Disneyland? If you live in the mountains near Disneyland, you likely got mounds of the real snow. This is going to be a great ski week! Big Bear, our local ski mountain, got 11 feet of new snow in the storm and has reopened after too much of a good thing caused roads to the mountain to close.

Toontown News

We’re only a couple of weeks away from the grand reopening of Toontown, and things are starting to come together quickly. The land opens to the public on March 19, and we’re seeing signs of life just over the construction wall…

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
This new themed sign warns guests about fireworks closures

While the majority of the land is still blocked off for heavy construction, there are some things that even a wall cannot hide. This week, we spotted the new Mickey and Minnie fountain that’s in front of CenTOONial Park. Take a look at the post below:

We also saw that the Wishing Tree has been placed and decorated with colorful oversized lanterns.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Signs for the land’s eatery, Café Daisy, have been installed.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Curious about what’s going to be offered at this new quick-serve window? It’s about as wacky as you can expect from Toontown. You’ll find chili cheese dogs, silly pizza “Flop-Overs,” a plant-based Spring Garden Wrap, and an assortment of kid-friendly foods.

The other quick-serve location, “Good Boy! Grocers,” offers snacks and drinks that are perfect for having a picnic.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
Model on display at D23 Expo

In fact, picnics are encouraged! One of the specialty offerings there is a novelty Perfect Picnic Basket (a plastic basket with a disembodied gloved hand on top; you slip your hand inside and suddenly you’re part cartoon!) that gives you the option of three snacks (like mandarin oranges, snack cheese, chips, etc.) and a drink (bottled water or a juice box). Additionally, you can opt to upgrade the experience with a Perfect Picnic Blanket.

Considering how popular the faux grass areas are already, we imagine that we’ll be seeing a lot of picnickers once this option is available starting March 19. When CenTOONial Park opens with the land, there will be even more artificial turf to stretch out on.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
We do wish these trees were bigger and that there were some garden elements, but once the trees grow in, this area will be lovely.
, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
We’ve seen a lot of influencers roll around on this fake grass. We’re not sure if this guy is an influencer or if he died of toon-overload.

Those were the good things from Toontown this week. As for the less-than-spectacular stuff, we’ve got that covered too. As you already guessed, this little bit is in reference to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

When we walked through the queue on March 3, we noticed that more of the snack stand station has been damaged. Guests have managed to pry some of the candy props from the register area of the faux concession stand.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

The other issue with the attraction is that there have been problems with the ride’s function. Runaway Railway, unfortunately, suffers from long bouts of downtime when some aspect of the attraction fails. It’s not uncommon for a new ride to have frequent breakdowns, but this ride already exists at Walt Disney World few issues. One of our team members, Jaysen, got a rare look at the attraction with the lights on when his ride broke down:

The attraction has been running since January 27th and still searching for its groove. We hope that these issues are just a case of growing pains and that things will smooth out soon.

Disneyland Construction & Refurbs

An impressive number of projects are underway at the Disneyland Resort… and these are just the ones that have broken ground and that we are aware of…

Tiana’s Palace Redo of French Market

The French Market in New Orleans Square is no more. All signs of the old place have been covered up by scaffolds and a giant scrim.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

The back side of the restaurant has stripes instead of a photo print.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

The concept art on the construction wall shows the transformation to Tiana’s Palace. If you cover up the smokestacks and sign with your hand, not much will change on the exterior.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

We like some of the details in the concept art. Tiana’s friend Charlotte and her Big Daddy sit with Tiana’s mother Eudora…

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Nearby, two gentlemen sit at a table, one of them reading a Disneyland magazine. But if you look carefully in the background, you see upside down chairs and a water bottle. It appears that they took an actual after-hours photo of the establishment and then painted over it with the new elements… leaving some chairs and a water bottle behind…

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

The really good news is that the Mint Julep Bar appears exactly as it was before… at least in this concept art (you see some strange tarped items between the tables and Mint Julep windows)…

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

The backlit signs for the French Market have been removed from their frames.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Adventureland Treehouse

The never-ending project to transform the Tarzan Treehouse into the Adventureland Treehouse inspired by the Swiss Family Robinson hasn’t changed much in recent weeks. But we’re sure that progress is being made. We see workers in the tree moving around, so something is happening.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

San Fransokyo

Unlike the slow Treehouse project, Pacific Wharf will quickly transform into San Fransokyo from Big Hero 6. Scaffolds are up, the bridge is being painted, and we should see some pretty big cosmetic changes in the weeks to come. Other than the bridge, there isn’t much real construction on this project. Most of it will be paint, signage, lanterns, and music. The beer truck is being moved a short distance to a spot on the other side of Cucina Cucamonga from where it is currently parked. Baymax will meet guests just behind the current spot the beer truck occupies.

A bit of sad news. The destruction of theme is almost complete at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen. New Orleans is giving way to a modern look.

Perhaps they’ll surprise us with something really great when this is all done. But then again…

Home Store/Wonderground

Another project which seems to be lingering is the redo of the Home Store and Wonderground. Major construction was done to enclose the atriums inside both shops. We’re curious to see how it all looks when it’s done.

Disneyland Hotel

The new Vacation Club tower at the Disneyland Hotel should be unwrapped soon. The official opening date is September 28, 2023.

This & That

We’ve reached the odds-and-ends section of the Disneyland Update. Here are a few of the smaller stories that we think you’ll appreciate.

MagicBand+ Interactive Statues

This week, Disneyland quietly introduced a new feature to MagicBand+. There are a handful of elements in Downtown Disney and DCA (a statue and a few medallions) that have added an interactive element to it. Essentially, if you wave your MagicBand+ in front of the applicable element, you’ll activate a few lights and sounds.

The large Mickey statue in front of the defunct ESPN Zone building is MagicBand+ interactive

as is the Disney100 medallion in DCA.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Strangely, there are no interactive items at Disneyland as of the time of publishing. Considering that Walt Disney World incorporated 50 characters around the four theme parks that all interacted with MagicBand+, so we’ll hopefully see a few things added to the parks soon.

Oscars Synergy

As we all know, Disney is so much more than a theme park company. The 100-year-old media empire started as a film small animation and film studio and grew from there. Today, Disney owns the ABC television network, which produces the Oscars. The annual awards ceremony will take place this upcoming Sunday, March 12. To cross-promote the awards show, there are a few limited-time offerings that bring the glitz and glamour of the Oscars to the Disneyland Resort.

Over at the Grand Californian Hotel, you can find an Oscars photo op, red carpet included!

The real exciting crossover between the Oscars and Disney can be found at Carthay Circle in DCA.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets! , Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

In the foyer of the restaurant, there is a special exhibit that displays the honorary Oscar that Walt Disney won for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 (two years after the film’s debut). This custom-made Oscar statue consists of a regular Oscar with seven small statuettes. The Oscar is on loan from The Walt Disney Family Museum up in San Francisco.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

The placement of this exhibit is purposeful, especially considering that the original Carthay Circle Theatre is where Snow White premiered in 1937. This exhibit works on several different levels!

At this time, viewing is on a walk-up basis with one party viewing at a time. It seems very few people know about this little slice of Disney history since there was virtually no wait when we visited.

You can watch the Oscars on ABC this Sunday, March 12.

New Table Service Dining: Earl of Sandwich Tavern is Now Open

The full-service concept of Earl of Sandwich has opened. The Earl of Sandwich Tavern offers a range of entrées without double-dipping into the hot sandwiches offered on the other side of the restaurant. The high prices are in line with the rest of the resort, which is an unfortunate reality.

Mandalorian Season 3 Mug

The Mandalorian has returned on Disney+ for season 3 of the hit show. While our reviewer thinks that The Mandalorian has turned more into The Grogu Show (Also with a Mandalorian), the love for the show continues. To celebrate the release of the new season, there is a special tumbler available at Galactic Grill.

Tiana Float Back in Magic Happens

When we watched the return of the Magic Happens Parade last week, we noticed that the Princess and the Frog float was notably absent. There was a technical issue with the float which prevented it from joining the rest of the parade. However, we’re glad to say that the float is back in operation as of this week!

An Unintentional Disneyland Firework Spectacular Tribute

If you’re old enough to remember the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks show (the very first fireworks spectacular at Disneyland), you’ll remember that there were no fancy projections on the castle, just fireworks over the original Magic Kingdom. On Friday night, the main projector on Sleeping Beauty Castle was apparently having problems, with either sporadic projections on the castle or dark for long periods of time. One of our photographers captured the unintentional tribute to a classic Disneyland fireworks show. But it sure wouldn’t be good for a projection-only week night.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!
At some parts of the show, the only projections that worked on the castle were in the tunnel (which uses a different projector than the exterior of the castle)

Character Updates

If you’re a character fan, this section is for you. This week, we saw a few updates to the character roster at DCA. We noticed that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is meeting guests out on Buena Vista Street. This is the first time we’ve seen him since Lunar New Year ended last month.

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

And for you Marvel fans out there, we spotted Cassie Lang in Avengers Campus meeting with her dad, Ant-Man (Scott Lang). Have you seen Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania yet?

, Disneyland Update – Exciting Finds, Feasts, and Oswald Meets!

Speaking of Avengers Campus, we have a bone to pick with the decision to put characters up on the Avengers HQ balcony at night and not give them anything to do other than just stand there. We saw a relatively new character, Kang the Conqueror, and no one was noticing or interacting with him at all. Without a microphone or a spotlight, he was just a shadow up there.
