The grand reopening of Toontown is just a few short weeks away! We got an exclusive opportunity to check out the Cast Member cosTOON fitting as Toontown prepares for the reTOON of guests. Here’s everything you want to know about Toontown’s Cast Member costumes.
Springboarding off of the successful mix and match style of the costumes in Galaxy’s Edge, the eye-catching Toontown pieces use a color palette inspired by Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Donald and Daisy.
The costume design team led by Lynn Kaufmann, Joe Kucharski and Yonit Olshan, worked closely with Cast to make sure the breathable, stretchy athletic wear was functional and comfortable for all body and ability types. Women will finally have full-sized pockets that actually hold things!
The choices for tops are tunics, henleys, button-downs, a faux hoody, and a fitted boatneck, each of which has a faint pattern on it suggesting a style such as a knit or weave.
Charcoal is used on the underside of the clothing for moisture wicking and odor control. Bottoms come in curvy and straight cut pants, joggers, shorts and a skirt; for the first time, Disney is issuing leggings that can be worn under skirts and shorts. A heavier coat is still in production, but vests and lightweight jackets are available for layering.
Runaway Railway has a dedicated costume, the merchandise team has an exclusive faux toon scarf, and the food crew has a reversible apron (one side for working at Daisy’s, the other at Pluto’s).
One of the exciting features developed from Cast input is the side zipper on the tunics, which allows the shirt to expand as needed; that means that pregnant Cast no longer have to wear the generic, non-themed costume that takes their look out of the immersive world.
Multiple hats and accessories help create over one thousand outfit combinations. Cast will provide their own footwear, which can be red, yellow, blue or black.
The cosTOONs are designed so that guests can quickly identify Cast, whose outfits are a mixture of cartoon images – for example, a 2D drawn pocket – with oversized, textured stitching representing entry into the 3D world. These cosTOONs allow Cast to express their personality, and there are no guidelines as to whether a shirt has to be tucked, or a belt worn.
Cast have an additional storytelling element at their disposal, getting to represent one or all of the civic clubs found in the land: Toontown Handy Helpers, Toontown Hysterical Society, Mouse Ear Society, and the Junior Woodchucks of the World. If these sound familiar, it’s because their logos are on either side of the Toontown sign as you enter under the train tracks. So far we know that Minnie Mouse and the Hysterical Society was responsible for the “Mickey Through the Ears” exhibit inside the Runaway Railway queue. When Toontown reopens, it will be interesting to discover what role the other clubs have played in its revitalization.
The cosTOON fittings provide invaluable data on which pieces are the most popular, helping Costuming plan better with ordering and sizing. It is still early in the planning stages for the Tiana changes on the horizon, but it is a safe bet that the collaboration with Imagineering and Cast for costume design will continue. Everything that worked for costumes in Galaxy’s Edge has been improved upon for Toontown and should help continue the trend of lightweight costume separates that put the FUN in functional for Cast Members and guests.
