We all know that Walt Disney World is The Most Magical Place on Earth, but sometimes the magic can be loud and crowded. Everyone deserves a break from the hustle and bustle of Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom, Pandora – The World of Avatar at Animal Kingdom, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and everything in between. Here are some of my favorite spots to escape from the crowds without leaving the magic behind.
Theme Park Tranquility
When theme parks were closed down in 2020, we ran a column, 10 Minutes of Magic, which showed a static camera shot of a theme park setting to watch 10 minutes of activity in the area. It was quite popular as the parks weren’t available to folks, and it was a method to get the feeling of being back in a theme park. But now that guests have to Walt Disney World in full force, people need to do a little research for finding some Theme Park Zen in the middle of their WDW day. Lucky for you, I’ve got a handy list for you sorted out…

Relaxing at Magic Kingdom
While Magic Kingdom forever holds a place in my heart as being the most magical, the most beautiful, and the most fanciful park at Walt Disney World, I’ve come to realize that the days of having the park to myself are long gone. No amount of crowds can keep me away from Cinderella Castle, but every once in a while I like to find a quiet place where I can rest and recharge without having to leave the park.

Tom Sawyer Island is an often overlooked paradise for those in need of respite. You reach the island by boarding a log raft located on the Rivers of America in Frontierland. Once you arrive, you are free to roam the island however you please. Maps are located in multiple spots on the island so that you can easily find your way around. The rustic trails are flanked by lush foliage to keep you shaded during your walkabout. You can experience babbling brooks, enchanting caves, and charming bridges over the water.

From the island, you can see some incredible views of attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Haunted Mansion. The sounds of the Liberty Square Riverboat along with the music that plays on the island keep you immersed in the magic of Disney in a quaint and comforting way. Tom Sawyer Island is my number one secret spot for taking a break from the crowds of Magic Kingdom.

Relaxing at EPCOT
EPCOT has been undergoing some pretty massive changes over the past couple of years. Due to the large-scale construction and renovations, guests have fewer areas to explore and spread out. After winding your way through the Worlds of EPCOT, you may find yourself feeling a little bit drained. You’re in luck! A fantastic, relaxing space is right inside the park.

SeaBase aquarium in EPCOT is located in World Nature at The Seas with Nemo & Friends Pavilion. If you can’t find it on your map, just follow the soothing sound of ocean waves (and the perhaps less soothing sound of seagulls). You have two options for entering SeaBase: you can either hop into a clamobile and ride The Seas with Nemo & Friends, or you can forgo the ride (and the line for it) by entering the aquarium through the SeaBase Gift Shop.

SeaBase is incredibly large, housing a 5.7-million-gallon Caribbean Coral Reef Aquarium, multiple individual rooms, and two floors to explore. If you find any room or area of the aquarium to be a little too crowded for your liking, there are many more to choose from, so don’t worry about any lack of space.

While you have the option to experience entertainment such as Turtle Talk With Crush or demonstrations with the many cast members regarding the marine life around you, there’s no pressure to go or be anywhere at any time. Some of my fondest memories in EPCOT are of finding a quiet window of the Caribbean Coral Reef Aquarium and watching the marine life swim by. The aquarium is magical and vibrant, keeping the magic of Disney all around you while allowing you time to relax.
Relaxing at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Now here’s a tricky one, and I’m not afraid to admit it. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is known for action, excitement, and entertainment. This leaves little room for calming, relaxing environments, but worry not! I have the perfect place in mind where you can find that quiet time you’ve been yearning for.

Walt Disney Presents is an attraction located within the Animation Courtyard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The venue houses a gallery with exhibits showcasing Walt Disney and his life as well as The Walt Disney Theater, which either shows the documentary Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream or a clip of an upcoming Disney or Pixar film. While this attraction is more intimate than the others I’ve mentioned, the nature of the attraction gives it a sort of “library effect.” Even at its most crowded, I’ve found Walt Disney Presents to be a quiet, calm, and relaxing space. There’s a sort of reverence that hangs in the air as guests learn about Walt Disney’s life, work, and dreams.

I become misty-eyed nearly every time I visit this space, and I find it to be just as magical as the bright lights and exhilarating entertainment in the rest of the Walt Disney World theme parks. The film at the end of the self-guided tour is entirely optional, but I highly recommend it. Every short film I’ve seen has been wonderful, and it’s another great chance to recharge before you head back out into the excitement of the park.
Relaxing at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
While I could go on and on about the many, many options for resting and relaxing inside of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, I will share with you my very favorite hidden gem. It is so fabulously reclusive that its name doesn’t even appear on a guide map. This well-guarded secret isn’t just my favorite quiet space in Disney’s Animal Kingdom— it’s my favorite quiet space in any of Walt Disney World’s resorts and theme parks. Please don’t tell all of your friends about this, though. Let’s keep this one between us.

The Tree of Life Garden is located in Discovery Island at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This incredible, beautiful walk around the Tree of Life will restore and rejuvenate even the weariest of souls. The entrance to the garden can be easy to miss, which is how I speculate this spot has retained its peaceful nature. It’s guarded by what looks to be an extremely large stump of a tree, which reads “Tree of Life Garden” and is surrounded by wood-carved animals. Once you enter the path, you will be transported to a magical paradise. Don’t expect a garden of flowers or vegetables; this is a garden of wondrous waterfalls, enormous tropical plants, and the Tree of Life itself.

The sound of rushing water mingles with the enchanting music of the park as you take your time to walk through this secluded space. It’s almost impossible to see other guests or any other part of the park through the thick vegetation of the garden, which only adds to the relaxing, almost otherworldly atmosphere. You can get up close and personal with some of the animals on the Tree of Life, relax behind a waterfall, and even see some real animals in their homes around the garden. If you’re really lucky and you time it just right, you might even get to see the astounding, free-flying macaws of Winged Encounters – The Kingdom Takes Flight soar over your head.

There aren’t any cast members or attractions in this garden, only the wonders of nature around you. You’re free to stay and experience the beauty of the Tree of Life Garden for as long as your heart desires, and I promise that after your first visit, you’ll be going back every time you’re inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
