It’s Mario merchandise time! Ahead of the promised 2023 opening for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood, the Feature Presentation Store at the front of the park is now completely transformed into a Super Nintendo World store. Universal did an impressive job of theming the location and the merchandise inside is sure to get you excited for the upcoming new land. We’ll take a look, PLUS, the latest construction photos of the new land itself… Let’s-a go!
Super Nintendo World Store Theming and Layout
The Feature Presentation Store (which we will now refer to as the “Super Nintendo World Store”) is located just beyond the turnstiles of Universal Studios Hollywood. It is on the same side of the street as Guest Relations, but further down. Even before you enter the actual store, you are greeted by banners with icons representing Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach at one of the entrances (there are two).
Before we delve any deeper, here’s a look at the layout of the store.
This newly-reopened store is freshly decorated with imagery found in the Super Mario video games. Platform pieces, bricks, and Question Mark Blocks are used as display tables as well as decor.
Two Warp Pipes poke out from the store’s ceiling.
Even the checkout area is themed. The mural of Princess Peach’s castle in the background is a nice touch.
Guests making purchases at the Super Nintendo World Store will have their goods packaged in an all-new shopping bag that is branded with the land’s logo.
Merchandise Available at the Super Nintendo World Store
Much of the merchandise sold here was previously available (you can see our earlier cover
age of those items from our previous Universal Merchandise Update) but it is still great to see it all gathered in such a special location.
It is also important to note that there is a purchase limit of 4 items per style per transaction and the merchandise is excluded from all discounts.
Character Goods
All of the items are themed to characters from the Super Mario Bros. series.
There are plushes in a variety of sizes. On the store’s opening day, there were plushes of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi. Japan’s Super Nintendo World also has a number of other characters (most notably, Bowser and Toad). Hopefully, we will get them here as well.
Plush keychains are another stuffed toy option. The characters available are Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Lakitu, Shy Guy, and a Bob-omb. Each keychain also has a plastic medallion attached that says “Super Nintendo World” on one side and “Universal Studios” on the other.
There are also some more practical items like the magnet set or reel pass case, both seen below.
Have a sweet tooth? There are five character chocolate bars. Depending on which character you choose, you will get a different flavor.
Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Peach each have their own plastic glass with a wraparound design.
Mario’s face on the front of this hat brings back memories of the start screen on Super Mario 64. You can’t grab Mario’s nose on this hat, though.
In contrast to the other merchandise offerings, there is a handful of items decorated with art resembling neon lights with a focus on the game series’ baddies, particularly Boo (called “Teresa,” which is its Japanese name) and Bowser (with his Japanese name “Koopa”)
Super Mario Bros.- Themed Merchandise
The 8-bit wonder that is the original Super Mario Bros. is the inspiration for these items.
Merchandise not Exclusive to Super Nintendo World
Among the merchandise created for the new land were other items that, while not made specifically for Super Nintendo World, still fit right in. These goods mostly consisted of different playsets and figures.
Hot Wheels Mario Kart toys (both single figures and race track sets) were very popular.
There were also other more traditional playsets and figures (some were articulated but not all).
Different kinds of mugs, including one travel mug, also fit this category.
Construction Progress on Super Nintendo World
Work continues on the actual Super Nintendo World area, which will be located in Universal Studios Hollywood’s lower lot. There is signage stating that it will open in 2023 but nothing more specific than that.
Here is the state of the construction as of April 8, 2022.
Bowser’s Castle is taking shape.
And other areas are progressing as well.
