2022 is gearing up and there is a load of fresh merchandise to start it off right. There are oh-so-many new outfit options, some terrific toys, and tons of other fantastic finds. But beyond all that, there are some extra-special items to share! The merchandise for Disney California Adventure’s Lunar New Year celebration arrived early and we were there to cover it. Let’s take a look at all the fun (and festive) goods!
Celebrate the Year of the Tiger, Disney-Style
Disney California Adventure’s Lunar New Year Celebration doesn’t start until January 21st, but that has not stopped the Mouse from stocking the Year of the Tiger merchandise ahead of schedule. Their merchandise booth for the Park’s festival opened on January 10 near The Little Mermaid attraction. We expect that some additional items, such as a Lunar New Year Minnie Ear Headband and Minnie Mouse plush, are still on the way (the are already on ShopDisney).
Let’s take a look at what’s available now:
Disneyland Lunar New Year Apparel
The Spirit Jersey created for Lunar New Year 2022 is one of the company’s most eye-catching seasonal designs. The front chest has an image of Chip and Dale in tiger outfits, holding lanterns while balancing atop a tiger figure. Beside them reads the message “Happy New Year 2022.” On the back is “Celebrating the Year of the Tiger” in English with the equivalent in Chinese above it. The waist portion has a print full of Mickey Daruma dolls.
In terms of other adult apparel, guests are able to purchase a shirt for women with art that covers the entire garment as well as a unisex adult tee featuring Chip, Dale, and a tiger.
Kids can celebrate with this colorful shirt.
Disneyland Lunar New Year Home Goods
If you are a fan of the art on the women’s shirt, you’ll love the Lunar New Year Tervis Tumbler. This tumbler is an excellent option if you want merchandise with that design on it but, for whatever reason, don’t fancy purchasing the tee.
Chip and Dale reprise their roles as little tigers-in-training in this darling figure display. I especially love the little Disney Daruma hanging from the tree.
And Donald Duck rings in (drums in?) the new year with the help of a little tiger friend on this figure.
Disneyland Lunar New Year Toys
Who doesn’t love a good seasonal plush? Mickey Mouse is all dressed up for Lunar New Year in a festive outfit. Details like the crane print on his top and the embroidery on his sash make this plush even more attractive. As mentioned earlier, there is a companion Minnie Mouse plush as well that I suspect will arrive at the Disneyland Resort at a later date (you can buy the Minnie plush as well as this Mickey one on shopDisney now).
Even Disney nuiMOs have new Lunar New Year festival fashions. Styles include a shirt and pants set (with a tiger cap) and a dress and hooded cape set.
Now, on to the rest of the items we spotted this week at the Disneyland Resort…
Refresh Your Disney Wardrobe
The new year brought with it a ton (and I do mean “a ton”) of new clothing for guests to purchase at the Disneyland Resort. So whether you are just exiting Grizzly River Run soaking wet or simply in the market for some new attire, you’ll want to check these pieces out.
Spirit Jerseys
Spirit Jersey has released two new hoodies and this time they are themed to characters rather than the Parks. Styles include Baymax from Big Hero 6 and Maui from Moana.
Star Wars fans are treated to two different, and equally special, Spirit Jerseys. The first style pays homage to the iconic prologues at the beginning of Star Wars films. And on the back, it has that very special preamble: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…[.]
The other Star Wars design is all about Grogu, Grogu, Grogu. This Spirit Jersey has the cutest art of the little alien that I have ever seen. I dare you to look at it and not, at the very least, crack a smile.
Tie-dye Spirit Jerseys are not especially a new phenomenon but this one adds extra magic to the style by making Hidden Mickeys out of the tie-dyed spots.
I love Mickey Waffles. And I know I am not the only one. The breakfast of champions has such a cult following that it now has its own scented (yes, maple syrup-scented!) Spirit Jersey.
Then there is this fancy-looking black Spirit Jersey (or as fancy as a Spirit Jersey can get, I suppose). With metallic gold lettering and line art of Sleeping Beauty Castle on the back, it has a different style than most of the Spirt Jerseys we have seen.
Sleeping Beauty Castle Styling
In addition to the Spirit Jersey, several other pieces of apparel make use of a Sleeping Beauty Castle motif.
The same line art seen on the back of Spirit Jersey is also printed on the front of this women’s shirt. The Disneyland “D” is an embroidered appliqué.
This zippered hoodie is slightly more subtle in its implementation of the Sleeping Beauty Castle theme. The print used on the garment’s sleeves and hood lining is decorated with different icons seen around the castle, such as the Disney family crest, as well as a silhouette of the landmark itself.
These lounge pants would compliment either of the previous pieces.
There is also a pink, ruffle-sleeved kid’s shirt with similar art. “Disneyland” is printed on the back of the shirt, across the shoulders, joined by little sprinklings of pixie dust.
Play in the Park
As if a day in the Parks wasn’t fun enough, Disney transforms the experience into a board game (aesthetic-wise, at least) for this collection. And by the way, Disney, if you were to make an actual board game based on this concept, I am sure I am not the only one who would be interested. Just sayin’.
What appears to be a spinner piece for a board game decorates the front of this kid’s ringer tee.
This kid’s zippered hoodie has less obvious nods to gaming. In truth, the only reference seen, beyond the actual “Play in the Park” wording on the back, is the checkerboard look of the floor underneath Mickey and Minnie and that is a bit of a stretch. That aside, it is still a cute piece with a mix of screen-printed and embroidered art. If I had my druthers, it would be a different color, though. Keeping white clean is a difficult task, especially at the Parks!
Mickey and his pals enjoy a variety of attractions on the print on this pair of leggings. The print is adorable overall, but I especially like Pluto riding Dumbo the Flying Elephant. “Disneyland Resort” is embroidered near the left hip.
Artsy Apparel
Whether you are feeling a little chicken or just want to rock out (either à la A Goofy Movie or Muppet-style), there is an apparel option for you. The graphics on these pieces all seem as though they were airbrushed. Moana’s Hei Hei and Powerline from A Goofy Movie are featured on shirts while The Muppets’ Animal is on a pullover hoodie.
A trio of aliens appears to be spraypainted on this shirt. Of course, their signature “Oooohhh!” is included.
Tie-Dye to Die For
Make it pink! Make it blue! Or opt for both with this ombre sweatshirt of Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Governor Ratcliffe’s (and eventually Pocahontas’s) snooty pug, Percy, gets his time to shine with this new tie-dye sweatshirt. He sits on the front along with the phrase “A pug is all you need.”
Pegasus from Hercules prances proudly across the front a similar sweatshirt that reads “Just wingin’ it.”
Pixar fans will get a kick out of this Pizza Planet sweatshirt.
For some reason, this “Keep Smiling” shirt comes off as menacing to me. Does anybody else have that reaction?
Other Clothing
This princess shirt bears a lovely message of cooperation with the phrase “We shine together.”
Here are some Disney ladies we don’t see very often! These simple tees have art of either Roxanne from A Goofy Movie or Zootopia’s own Judy Hopps.
Some of the Pixar shorts have less representation merchandise-wise than others. It is nice to see more items made for I Lava You.
These mock baseball jerseys are themed to either Mike Wazowski of Monsters Inc. or Hercules.
Baymax makes “heart hands” on the front of this pullover hoodie.
Sized for adults, the Alice in Wonderland print on this puffy insulated jacket is mesmerizing.
This overall dress is a new addition to the line of Denim Mickey clothing made by Her Universe.
What’s Up in the Land of Toys
New nuiMOs
The nuiMOs version of Belle arrived shortly at Disneyland after her shopDisney launch. Her dress is removable, in case you want the princess to wear any of the other charming outfits created for the posable plushes.
Human-sized guests aren’t the only ones getting a plethora of new apparel. A variety of new athletics-themed outfits for nuiMOs are now available. There are tracksuits, ski clothes, and even attire suitable for aerobics.
Star Wars Stuff
A trio of Star Wars action figures landed and they are impressive! These toys of Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and the Mandalorian do an excellent job of recreating the look of the on-screen character. And beyond that, they play voice clips and have light-up effects, both of which are motion-activated.
And if it’s droids you are looking for, the Droid Factory has a new set of figures based on models found in The Mandalorian.
Other Toys
If you have visited the Disneyland Resort in the past week you may have noticed a few of the stores have a new high-end doll. Yes, Ariel from the Disney Designer Collection is now available to purchase at select retail locations (this picture is from World of Disney in Downtown Disney for example). And we have even more news about the Designer Collection dolls later on in this Update!
I previously showcased five of these stylized flat plushes (they are not actually the old Pookalooz line but eerily close) but we now have an additional stuffed friend added to the lineup, the Toy Story Alien. This little green guy is actually part of the second series for this line. You can spot the numbers and series in the upper-right corner of the boxes.
Odds & Ends
Grogu might be the cutest Star Wars plush backpack to date (you have to admit the old Chewbacca and Ewok ones were pretty darn endearing).
If you can’t wear your love of The Mandalorian’s Grogu on your sleeve (or back), you might want to give your head a try. The pint-sized alien, joined by a Sorgan frog, sit atop a shimmery headband (much like Ear Headbands sans the Ears). This style for a headband, with a plush character riding on top, is popular in the Tokyo Disney Resort. I would like to see more characters on headbands like this in the States.
As for the ever-popular Ear Headband, this black and gold one would work well when paired with any of the Sleeping Beauty Castle-themed apparel shown earlier.
And from the 2022-dated collection comes this Glow Ear Headband.
Valentine’s Day is next month and Dooney & Bourke has prepared a special Mickey and Minnie print for their bags (seen here on their satchel and crossbody bag). The couple is depicted doing all sorts of lovey-dovey things.
This fanny pack/hip bag with art from Jerrod Maruyama was created for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. But Disneyland Resort guests can find it at Downtown Disney’s Wonderground Gallery.
Another round of folding hand fans has arrived at the Resort and are stocked at a number of shops (these photos were taken at Downtown Disney’s World of Disney and Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff in Disney California Adventure). Four new designs have been spotted: Sleeping Beauty Castle, Hades, the Seagulls from Finding Nemo, and the characters of Inside Out. To my eye, the Seagulls are the best design of the bunch, with the funny, feathered fellows yelling in a variety of languages. What is your favorite?
This iridescent studded tumbler with straw was made in collaboration with Starbucks. In addition to the pink style seen here, turquoise and red ones have also been spotted.
A Royal Preview of the Next Disney Designer Collection Dolls
As part of the Ultimate Princess Celebration, Disney has periodically released dolls for their Disney Designer Collection. These figures feature different princesses in re-envisioned fashion styled by artists from all across The Walt Disney Company, each one costing $129.99. We now have a look at the next two characters in the lineup: Tiana and Aurora. Looking beyond the pair, the other planned princesses are Merida, Moana, Snow White, and Rapunzel.
The most recent release was Mulan, designed by Danae Cendejas. These dolls are available on shopDisney as well as at select shopping locations at Disney Parks (although there does seem to be a delay with releases at the Parks).
