Disney and Pixar revealed the teaser trailer for the upcoming animated feature “Lightyear,” a spin-off of the Toy Story franchise.

“Lightyear” will follow how the young test pilot became a space ranger and hero that spawned the Buzz Lightyear action figure made famous in Pixar’s Toy Story movies.

In the new film, Chris Evans (“Knives Out,” “Avengers: Endgame”) lends his voice to Buzz.

“The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” says Evans. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

The Hero Who Inspired the Toy

According to Pixar Animation Studios, “Lightyear” is a science fiction action-adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy. The film reveals how a young test pilot became the Space Ranger that we all know him to be today.

The trailer, with inspired portions of David Bowie’s “Starman” playing in the background, gives viewers a peek into Buzz’s backstory. Glimpses of his familiar space suit and the catchphrase “To infinity, and beyond” flash on screen, as well as a few new characters and larger-than-life scenes of space travel are also in the mix.

Annie Award-winning director and veteran Pixar animator Angus MacLane helms “Lightyear.” His past projects include the short films “BURN-E,” “Small Fry,” and the television special “Toy Story of Terror!” He’s no stranger to directing a Pixar film, as he co-directed 2016’s “Finding Dory” with Andrew Stanton. Galyn Susman (the “Toy Story That Time Forgot” short) is producing.

“Lightyear” debuts in theaters Summer 2022.

Pixar’s “Turning Red”

Pixar will also be releasing “Turning Red” next year, a film about a young girl who uncontrollably morphs into a giant red panda. The film will feature the voices of Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh. “Turning Red” will hit theaters March 11, 2022. It will also be the directorial debut of Domee Shi. Her short film “Bao” won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 91st Academy Awards.
