Originally set to open in spring of 2020, Epcot’s highly-anticipated Space 220 restaurant has finally opened to guests. We have all the details and an on-site interview with the creative director from Imagineering, Tom Fitzgerald.
Space 220 at EPCOT’s Mission: Space
Located next to EPCOT’s Mission: Space attraction, Space 220 is a dining experience with a whole lot of Imagineering wizardry at play. Upon entry, guests are transported 220 miles above Earth aboard a “stellar-vator” to the Alpha Centauri Space Station. You’ll see EPCOT drop away via the window at your feet as the window above shows the space station approaching.
As you exit the stellar-vator, you’ll spot a module of spinning produce representing the fresh ingredients on the menu.
Another chamber contains wine bottles embedded in the walls.
The restaurant itself offers panoramic views of Earth via floor-to-ceiling windows. Various spaceships (including the X-2 Deep Space shuttle from Mission: Space), astronauts in jet packs, and other easter eggs will float by the windows.
Those of you with a long memory may recall that the Alpha Centauri station was featured in the old [and beloved] Horizons attraction which was once located in this exact location. (With options of undersea and outer space dining, now we just need a Mesa Verde themed location!)

The Design of Space 220 Restaurant
We met with Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald at the restaurant and learned a bit more about the influence behind the experience:
“With Space 220, we now have a fine dining experience in our World Discovery neighborhood of the Park – and a chance for our EPCOT guests to experience a restaurant that is truly out of this world!” said Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Portfolio Executive Tom Fitzgerald.
Space 220 was one of the first ideas for the transformation of EPCOT. This restaurant infuses innovation, imagination, and creativity back into the park – we can’t wait to see the rest of the changes ahead for the future of EPCOT!
