LEGOLAND California is opening its newest area, LEGO Movie World after a year delay. Originally scheduled to open in March 2020, LEGO Movie World is the largest themed area in the park. We were there for opening day, May 27, and got to see what they’ve done to make everything awesome.
Combining the former LEGO Friends-themed Heartlake City (RIP) and DUPLO Playtown (moved up the hill), the new area is a mix of new construction and re-themed existing structures. Let’s start with the new.
The largest attraction in the land is a LEGO Movie-themed Soarin’ type flying theater show called Emmet’s Flying Adventure. Riders take seats on Emmet’s flying triple-decker couch and race three other master builders (Benny, Wildstyle, Unikitty) through three LEGO Movie settings (Cloud Cuckoo Land, Middle Zealand, The high seas). Along the way, you encounter familiar LEGO Movie characters and environmental effects like wind and mist. This ride is as if Star Tours used the Soarin’ style theater technology. No calm and relaxing views of nature here. Everything is frantic and colorful; it’s a fun ride and great for kids with active imaginations.
LEGOLAND posted this video teaser of the attraction on their YouTube page, I’ve got to warn you that the ride is much better than the teaser:
Also new to the park is Unikitty’s Disco Drop. A small drop tower-style ride, not so high it scares small children but not small kiddie-sized either. It has a nice medium size drop and bounce sequence. In keeping with Unikitty’s general theme and the specific disco name of the ride, the sled of seats spins around the tower in addition to the up and down bouncing. This adds a nice twist to an otherwise basic ride. Keep your eyes open for the disco DJ on the roof of the control building.
LEGOLAND’s short video teaser of the ride shows off the action of the ride and the animated kitty face atop the tower:
The last new thing in the land is a three-story tall playground-type slide built to look like Benny’s Spaceship SPACESHIP SPACESHIP! This attraction is designed for kids under 12.
Now the re-built, re-themed, and re-used.
The formerly LEGO Friends-themed carousel has gotten a new paint job and signage and become Queen Watevra’s Carousel. All the horses have new colors, the ride soundtrack is updated to the Queen’s theme song from The LEGO Movie 2, and the horse stable area next door has changed to . . . whatever you want it to be. As long as you want it to be bins of LEGO bricks to build with.
The empty event space that once held LEGO Movie models, local LEGO group displays, and a magic show has been re-themed into Emmet’s Super Suite apartment. You can meet characters there and take a green screen photo. Although current restrictions mean you can’t get too close to the characters, but that will probably change.
Where the live LEGO Friends show stage was, a water play area is now. No one was splashing today.
The existing ramen restaurant has been re-themed for the new land. Now called Everything Is Ramen it offers homemade ramen, rice bowls, and salads. A new snack stand called Benny’s Rocket Fuel has popcorn, other snacks. and drinks.
The crepe stand has been re-named Cloud Cuckoo Crepes, re-themed, re-painted, and moved but it still has a selection of sweet crepes, other sweet treats, and coffee drinks.
The entire land has gotten a fresh coat of paint, bricks, and theming so what were two different areas is now a single coherent space. Some of the existing buildings have new facades on the roofs to give the illusion of height. There are many LEGO Movie brick-built and molded characters and items to take photos with. All in all a great job by LEGOLAND.
